I totally forgot to mention last Thursdays emotional episode was probably one of the best of the season. Arizona's and Herman's friendship.. I LOVE IT! Finally Arizona has a friend that's apart from Callie. And unlike a lot of people, I don't think Callie's intensions were callous. At the lunch table I sensed a little jealousy. I think Callie wished Arizona could have been that happy with her. But up at the daycare where Callie was waiting for Arizona to come out, I think Callie had the best intensions with worrying about Arizona. No matter what has happened between them, they both will always care about (and always love) the other one. I also think Arizona was shocked to see that Callie still cared and she didn't really know what to say to that because she caught her off guard.

This is going to be two rocky chapters for the girls, but I felt compelled to write about this. I promise though, things will get better, quickly.

Chapter 78

"It's Arizona. She needs.." Teddy swallowed. "You need to come down stairs, Callie." At those words, the brunette felt her heart fall to the floor along with the scissors. Everything had been going so perfect for them until today when her wife had told her how bad she's really been feeling. Feeling like all the air had been sucked from her lungs, she bent over trying to catch her breath as Teddy rushed to her side.

"Breathe, Callie..." The blonde said as she pulled the surgical mask from her friends face to help get some more oxygen to her lungs. "Come on sweetie, breathe." She said as the brunette took a few gasping breathes.

"Where?" Callie said, ripping the gown from her body.

"Exam room four." Teddy said, running out of the OR on the brunettes heels. "Callie wait." She yelled stopping the surgeon in her tracts. "You need to know what you're walking into when you see her. She's in pain and there's some blood Callie." Teddy said, finally reaching her. "I went in her office to check on her and she was lying on the couch and she raised up.." She shook her head. "Anyway I asked Jackson to help me take her into an exam room and when we stood her up, she.." She closed her eyes to try to wipe the scene from her memory. "She had blood running down her leg."

"Damn it." She punched the wall. Callie couldn't handle it any longer, she turned and rushed down the stairwell while Teddy was still trying to explain to her what was going on. The last thing she heard the darker blonde say was that an ambulance was on the way. Rushing through the hall downstairs, Callie saw the closed door her wife was behind. Taking a few deep breaths, she put on a brave face for her wife as she opened it. Seeing her wife laying on the bed, Callie stepped further into the room seeing drops of blood on the floor from where they helped her wife to the bed. "Arizona?" She whispered. "Baby?" Looking at her pail wife on the bed.

"Callie?" She breathed, pulling the oxygen mask off her face that April had placed there perviously to get her breathing under control.

"Oh baby.." Seeing her wife like this broke her heart. "I'm right here... I'm right here honey." Callie said, quickly moving to stand beside her wife.

"I'm... sorry..." She began to cry when she saw her wife. "I'm sorry.. I should have stopped you from telling your grandma."

"Shh.. No.. no sweetie Don't worry about that. You have not done anything wrong, you hear me." Callie said, petting her wife. "I'm going to take you to the hospital okay?"

"The baby.." She whispered.

"Shh.. we're going to find out what's wrong okay. Don't worry, love. Let me do that, you just relax as much as you can okay?" All Arizona could do was nod, and let her wife handle the situation as she just lied there in the bed. "Are you still bleeding?" She asked, pulling the covers up only confirming her question.

"Am I?" She worriedly mumbled.

"Yeah." Callie answered her truthfully. "Hey.. hey." She bent down to the blonde when she started crying harder. "Arizona listen to me, we don't know anything yet."

"I'm.. loosing the.. ba.. baby aren't I?"

"Honey." Callie said, brushing her hair of her face. "I don't know, but whatever is happening, I'll be right here okay? You're okay baby, we'll get through this." Callie took her wife's hand and laid a soft kiss on the top. "April can you go check and see where the hell the ambulance is?" She turned and whispered to the nurse.

"Yes, Dr. Torres." Kepner said, leaving the two women alone.

"Babe, can you tell me what happened?" Callie asked, tears now falling down her face.

"I.. I don't know. I was getting tired so I laid down on the couch for a little while and then Teddy came in so I sat up and blood.. It just.." She started sobbing.

"Shh.. you don't have to say anymore sweetie." Callie said as Teddy poked her head in the door.

"They're here." Teddy said opening the door for the paramedics to enter the room.

Stepping away a few feet so that the workers could load her wife. "No, Callie?" Arizona panicked. She couldn't do this without her wife by her side.

"I'm here honey. They're just going to get you loaded okay?"

"Don't leave me." The blondes voice quivered.

"I'm not Arizona. I'm right here. I'm coming with you." Callie assured her wife as she pulled Teddy to the side. "I'm going to need you Teds."

"I'm here for whatever you need."

"I need you to have Kepner go and talk to my patients parents. Have her tell them everything went fine and she should be able to go home within a few hours, they know the drill upstairs."

"I got it Callie don't worry, I'll handle everything. Just call me as soon as you find something out, please."

"I will." Callie said, as her eyes began to water again. "Tell me I can do this." She whispered to her friend. "I need to be strong for her Teddy and on the outside I may look it but.. I'm falling apart on the inside."

"You can and you will, she needs you right now." Teddy said, grabbing the Latinas shoulders. "You will be strong for her and you'll let her cry if she needs too and you'll cry with her. Just be there for her and she will for you. Just like in the past, you'll be strong for each other."

"Why can't we ever catch a break Teddy?" She began to cry.

"Hey.. hey.." Teddy grabbing her hands. "No, not here." Teddy said, seeing Arizona was busy talking to the paramedics. "Come on." She said, pulling her out of the room and leading her to Arizona's office away from the prying eyes of their co-workers and patients. "Listen, Cal. I know you're upset and you're scared, you have every right to be.. but to keep her calm right now I'm going to need you to stay calm in front of her too. So go ahead and cry, get it out while she's not here." Teddy said hugging her friend as Callie broke down in her arms.

"What if she's loosing the baby, Teddy." She cried.

"You'll get through it, Callie. I promise. I'm here for both of you." She said, hugging her friend as they received a knock on the door.

"Callie, she's asking for you." April said, sticking her head in the office she saw the two friends disappear into a few minutes prior.

"Okay." She said, accepting tissues from Teddy.

"You okay?"

"Yeah." She said taking a deep breath and drying her eyes. "I'm okay, thanks Teddy."

"You're welcome." She replied opening the door for her as they wheeled her wife out of the room beside them.

"Callie?"

"I'm right here, honey." She said, taking her wife's hand. "Teddy, call Addison, get her to meet us in the ER." Callie said as they were led out of the clinic and helped into the ambulance. Callie remembered Arizona said that the ambulance ride to the hospital when she was attacked felt like an hour long journey and she had a feeling that it would feel like that to her right now also.

Nothing was said except a few hushed whispers of love from the brunette to her wife during the ride to the hospital while the paramedics worked on the blonde. Callie was praying for her wife's safety above all else in between soothing words to Arizona. Making it to the hospital in mere minutes, The blonde was rushed out the back of the bus and into the hospital. "No, don't stop. Take her straight up to OB." Addison yelled to the paramedics rolled her friend through the hall. "Callie what happened?" She met the brunette who still had a hold of her wife's hand.

"I think she's miscarrying Addison." Callie chocked out a whimper.

"Has she been having problems?"

"She had been spotting like we discussed before, but she said it was much worse this morning and she's been cramping lately."

"Okay." The red head said, placing a comforting hand on her best friends back as they entered the elevator car to head upstairs.

Mere minutes later, Addison had already took a blood test and was doing a few other tests to determine the problem. Using the ultra sound, she confirmed their fear. Whispering to her nurse, she then waited until they were alone in the room. Callie was sitting in a chair by her wife's bed, still clinging on to the blondes pale hand letting Arizona know she was there for her while they quietly let Addison work.

Arizona watched as Addison's face turned somber when she removed the gel from her stomach. "Say it, Addison. You have to say it. I won't believe it until you do."

"I'm sorry, Arizona." Addison said, pushing the ultrasound machine out of the way and walking up to the head of the bed where her friend laid.

At Addison's words, Callie lowered her head and let the tears escape as she heard her wife let out a chocked sob. "I'm so stupid. I should of listened to Callie." The blonde closed her eyes and chastised herself as she cried.

"Arizona look at me." The red head said, waiting for the blonde to turn towards her. "Listen to me, this is not your fault sweetie. Sometimes these things happen and no matter the amount of precautions we take, sometimes these things are inevitable." She told Arizona as Callie stood up from her seat and wiped her eyes. "I think it's gods way of taking care of something that couldn't survive in this world for some reason or another." She petted the blonde. "I'm going to give you a few minutes alone."

"Arizona?" Callie whispered as the doctor left them in their thoughts. She had no idea what to do or say, she was hurting just like her wife. "I'm sorry, honey." She sat down on the edge of the bed next to her wife.

Arizona just laid there looking up at the ceiling in a daze, not even registering that her wife was trying to talk to her as tears fell from her eyes. Feeling Callie's cold hands on her face, she finally looked at the brunette. "I'm sorry.." She whispered, her bottom lip trembling.

"No.. please don't say that." Callie bent down and picked her wife up in her arms. "You have done nothing wrong, Arizona. We couldn't have stopped this. You heard Addison." She rocked them back and forth.

"I want to go home, Calliope." She said as she wrapped her arms around her wife and buried her face in the Latinas neck. "I just want to go home."

"I know baby, but you have to stay for a little while."

"Please Callie."

"Arizona, I want to too but we can't right now, you know I would if I could honey. We have to make sure you're okay first." She said, kissing her wife on the neck as she continued to sooth her. "And as soon as she gives me the okay, I'll take you home."

"Callie?" She pulled back to look at her wife.

"Yes, sweetheart?" Callie said, brushing the pads of her thumb over her wife's tearstained cheek.

"We lost our baby.." Arizona's voice breaking yet again as fresh tears ran down her face.

Callie's heart shattered when she heard the pain in her wife's voice. "I know honey.. I know." She said sadly, pulling her into a tight embrace as they held onto each other and cried until Addison came back into the room to discuss what they needed to do next.

She had informed them that the blonde didn't need a transfusion, but she would like to perform a D&C to ward off any infection, the red head scheduled Arizona to come in first thing the next morning for the procedure. After finally getting the blonde situated, Addison released the couple to go home for the night only for them to return the next morning.

Getting the blonde home, Callie helped her take a shower and put into bed for the rest of the night. During the process Arizona was like a zombie, just going through the motions and not thinking about anything except their loss. "Can I get you anything?" The brunette asked her wife as she gently sat down on the edge of the bed.

"No." Arizona replied. She was grateful for her wife and she knew Callie was having just as hard of a time as she was. "Callie.. I just.." She knew she needed to talk to her wife. "I don't even know what to think right now. It's like I don't even know how to process this."

"I know, baby." Callie said, rubbing her wife's side. "I'm.." She sighed. "I don't mean to sound cold or anything, but I'm grateful Arizona.. I'm grateful it happened now and not later."

"Yeah." She softly whispered.

"Will you call my mom? I want her to know, she'd want to know what happened."

"Yeah, I'll call her and Teddy when I let the boys in."

"This wasn't the way I wanted to tell her she was going to be a grandma." The blonde whispered.

"I know.. I know." Callie said, covering her wife up. "But she'd want to be here for you.. for us."

"Yeah." Arizona said, grabbing her wife's hand. "Callie I'm sorry I didn't listen to you when you wanted me to go to the doctor earlier."

"It doesn't matter, Arizona. This would have happened no matter what we would have done. It just wasn't the time right now."

"It hurts, wanting something so bad and then it feels like it gets stolen from you."

"I know.." Callie said, leaning down to her wife. "I'm sad too honey and I know it's worse on you because you were carrying the baby. But I just want you to know.. you can talk about it with me.. Say what you need to say. It's okay to be angry and to cry.. just let me be here for you."

"I know and you are here for me, just knowing you're here helps." Arizona said, brushing the stray hair out of the brunettes face. "I'd never be able to get through this without you."

"You don't have to worry about that.. I'm here baby." Callie was trying her best to keep up her brave and tough demeanor for her wife. Right now she didn't care how she was feeling, she just needed to be there for the blonde because she was experiencing a loss that she's never felt before. Having a living being inside you to only be told you're body rejected it, she couldn't even imagine how Arizona was feeling at the moment. "Are you sure I can't do anything for you?"

"Will you just hold me?"

"I would love too, I'll let the boys in and call mom then I'll be back. Okay?"

"Okay?"

Leaving the bedroom, Callie went downstairs as she called her mother in law to inform Barbara of what was happening with her daughter. "Hello?" The chipper grey haired woman answered the phone.

"Hey, Mom."

"Callie dear, how is everything? You sound down. Are you alright?" Barbara asked. "Is my daughter being stubborn again"

"No, she's not." She said, opening the back door of their house and walking out into the backyard to let the dogs out of their pen.

"What's wrong?" Barbara asked, hearing the angst in her daughter in laws voice.

"It's Arizona, mom. She.." Callie didn't know how to just come out and say it. Barbara didn't know they had been trying for a baby, much less created one and now she too was going to be upset. "We.." She sighed.

"Callie, you can tell me anything."

"I know." The brunette sniffed through the phone.

"Okay, you're worrying me, so out with it."

"There is nothing to worry about, mom. It's just. Arizona, she's a little under the weather right now."

"What's wrong with her? Is she really sick?"

"No.. yeah.. I don't know how to even answer that." She said, letting the dogs out of the fenced in area.

"Callie you're scaring me!"

"I'm sorry. It's just.." She just needed to get it out. "Arizona had a miscarriage today." She said hearing the elder woman gasp over the phone, causing her father in law to ask what was going on in the background.

"I.. She... You're having a baby?" Barbara asked surprised. She knew the girls wanted to have babies, but she never expected it this soon.

"Were. We were." Callie said, sadly. "But she lost it today." She said, hearing the other side go silent. "Mom?"

"I'm here honey. It's just a.. surprise I guess. How far along was she?" Barbara asked, sounding like she was beginning to cry.

"She was seven weeks."

"Where is she, Callie?" Barbara asked worriedly about her daughter. "How's she doing?"

"She's as good as to be expected. She's in bed upstairs. She wanted me to call you and let you know. We have to go in to the hospital tomorrow, Addison wants to perform a D&C on her."

"Aw.. my poor baby." Barbara chocked through the phone. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm here. That's about all I can say." Callie said walking back into the house with the dogs.

"I'm sorry, Callie. I'm truly sorry."

"Me too.." She whispered, pouring water into the dogs bowl. "I just wanted you guys to know what was happening, but I need to get back upstairs with her."

"Of course dear." Barbara said, "Do you think she'll be okay if we come over tomorrow? I don't want to upset her by being there if she really wants to be alone."

"No.. no, I'm sure Arizona would love that, you always want your mama around when something happens to you. She'd want you here."

"Okay, Daniel and I will see you tomorrow. And Callie... take care of our baby."

"I will mom." Callie wished she could trade places with her wife right now so she could carry this burden instead of the blonde. She couldn't stand seeing her wife this sad.

"Take care of yourself too sweetie. We love you."

"I will. We love you too mom." Callie knew that being strong right now was going to have its consequences because all she wanted was to fall to the floor in a heap of tears.

"We'll see you tomorrow sweetie." Barbara said before she hung up to tell her husband what was going on with their daughter and daughter in law.

Callie quickly called Teddy to let her know what was going on with her friend and to get her to push back all of their appointments for the next week so they could have some alone time at home. Teddy had asked Callie what she should tell people because a few of their friends had heard something happened to Arizona and had called her wanting to know what was wrong with their friend. Callie reluctantly told Teddy to tell them the truth, that Arizona had miscarried their baby. There was no shame in what had happened to her wife so she didn't want to hide it from their friends, she just hoped Arizona felt the same.

"Come on boys." Callie called them out of the living room where they were laying by the air conditioner vent to cool down from the early summer heat. "Mama needs us right now, guys. She's really sad, so I need your help cheering her up." She petted the Britney and the Husky before going upstairs to check on her wife. Walking into the room, River immediately went up to his mama whom was staring a hole in the wall. Sniffing her hand that was hanging off the bed, he then began smelling the air around Arizona sensing something was wrong with her. Jumping up on the edge of the bed, he laid down next to her and let out a soft sigh and Charlie went and laid behind her back, feeling the need to protect their mama.

"Hi, big guy." Arizona whispered, petting the dogs head. "You finally want me huh?" She sadly smiled down at the dog. Since the blonde had been pregnant the dogs didn't really want much to do with her, but now they were sensing something was wrong.

"You need anything babe? Something to drink?" Callie nervously stood by her wife.

"No." She said, grabbing her wife's hand. "I just need you and the boys. Lay with us?"

"Of course, love." Callie said, climbing into bed to hold her wife, having to fight with Charlie to get in between him and the blonde.

Finally feeling her wife wrap herself around her back, Arizona turned and snuggled into the brunettes chest as she began to silently cry again as they both held onto each other while Callie spoke soft loving words to her wife, trying to reassure them both that they would be okay.

I know a lot of miscarriages are different and I'm solely basing Arizona's off a personal experience in my life.

And can I just say... life, imitating art, imitating life. 3 days after I wrote this my sister had a miscarriage scare!
