Hey guys. If you haven't already, check out the one shot I wrote called 'Letting You Go' based on the Calzona sneak peek of episode 1116. I've had several ask to write another chapter of it and I've not made up my mind yet. The whole time writing it, I felt like I was cheating on The River.. lol. If I decide to write more, it would most likely be only be one more chapter.
Happy Grey's Day.. you ready for tonight? I am excited but nervous!
The River
Chapter 83
Walking into the front door of her home, Callie leaned over and dropped the keys from her mouth. "Arizona?" She called out wondering if her wife was downstairs or still in bed. Not getting an answer, Callie made her way into the kitchen with two handfuls of groceries in her hands. Today was Sunday which meant their shopping day. She had to go by herself because the blonde had been feeling a little under the weather lately and she didn't want to drag Arizona around town like that. Putting away the items, Callie then went to check on her wife. Checking their bedroom and bathroom not finding the blonde, she then went out to their back yard thinking Arizona might have been getting a little sun. "Honey?" She said, looking outside not seeing her anywhere. "Where are you?" She whispered after checking the downstairs bathroom. Noticing the dogs were missing too, she let out a loud whistle hoping that would their attention. "Charlie? River? Arizona?" She yelled out. Checking the last room in the house, she opened the door to the theatre room. The screen was on playing old episodes of The Golden Girls. Walking further in the dark themed room, Callie saw her wife sound asleep on the sofa lounger with the dogs both nestled behind her back. Tissues were strewn all over the couch and floor, letting her know her wife had been there for a while. Walking up to the sleeping trio, she knelt down and felt her wife's forehead to see if she was running a fever. It was now the beginning of September and school was back in session, meaning the clinic was at its busiest time of the year and Arizona was the first to come down with a sickness. It didn't matter how much you sanitized the rooms and every surface coming and going, someone always caught something from the tiny humans. Feeling her wife's cool forehead, she breathed a sigh of relief and pulled the cover up over the blonde so she didn't get cold. Deciding on letting her sleep more since she didn't get enough rest through the night, Callie laid down on the lounger beside of her and watched a few episodes as she let Arizona sleep off her cold.
A light noise stirred the blonde from her sleep. Not yet wanting to open her eyes, she tried to determine where the sound was coming from. Realizing the familiar sound, she rolled her head to the side and saw her wife passed out on the lounger beside of her sound asleep. Picking up the box of tissues by her head she threw them at Callie, hitting her right in the face.
"Oww.." Callie mumbled, forgetting where she was when she raised her head.
"Shh..." The blonde huffed. "Please.. your snoring is too loud." Rolling back over and covering her head up with the blanket in hopes of falling back to sleep. She felt bad about waking her wife up like that, but she felt terrible and really needed more sleep.
"I don't snore." Callie sat up and let out a yawn. She hadn't meant to fall asleep, but it was a welcomed nap.
"Shut upppp..." Arizona grumbled, kicking her feet towards her wife.
"Hey." Callie stood up and walked to her. "I know your sick, but don't snap at me."
Sighing. "I'm sorry." She mumbled under the covers. "I'm just so tired."
"I know." Callie sat down on the edge of the couch. Both dogs raised their head and watched every move the brunette made. "At least you're not running a fever." She massaged her wife's hip. "You still feeling bad?" She wished she could give her wife some meds to take, but with the chance of her being pregnant again they decided to let the blonde just fight the cold off naturally.
"Yeah, my heads stuffy and my stomach still hurts." Arizona whined, pulling the cover off her head.
"I'm sorry, babe." She leaned down and kissed the blondes forehead. "I bought some stuff to make you some soup, I'm going to go put it on."
"Kay, but if I'm sleeping when it's finished don't wakes up." She whispered as she cuddled into the cover.
"I won't." Callie said, standing and leaving the room to cook the meal. She remembered the last time her wife had been sick, she ended up being pregnant and she was hoping the same was true this time too. It had been a few weeks since they tried to make a baby at home in their own bed, so Callie made a mental note to have Arizona take a pregnancy test later that evening.
After cooking the homemade soup, The brunette went back into check on her wife to see how she was doing and if she was up to try to eat something, hoping it would settle the blondes stomach. Walking into the dark room, she met Arizona at the entrance. "Hey, I was just about to see if you wanted to try to eat something?" Callie asked.
"Yeah, I could try." Her voice was horse.
"You want me to bring it in here or do you want to eat in the kitchen?"
"Maybe we can sit outside? I think a little fresh air will do me some good."
"Okay, go wash up and I'll bring it out." Callie said, going back into the kitchen and getting her wife some chicken soup, hoping it would ease her stomach some.
After using the bathroom, Arizona fetched her throw and wrapped it around herself before going to the outside patio to meet her wife. Wishing the whole time she never suggested eating outside because she felt too tired and weak to make it.
"You look awful." Callie said as her wife walked out the French door.
"I feel awful." Arizona said, her voice a harsh whisper.
"Well, you look it." She chuckled as she pulled out a chair for the blonde to sit in. "I'm only kidding, you are beautiful." She said kissing the top of her wife's head. "Eat up, I'm going to run and get you a drink."
Callie walked back into the kitchen to get the blonde some ice cold Gatorade. She knew how much her wife loved the sports drink when she wasn't feeling so well. Joining her back outside, she saw Arizona in the same position she was in when she left a minute ago. She was leaned back in the chair with her head thrown back soaking up some of the suns rays. "Arizona, eat honey." She said, placing the drink on the table in front of her.
"I'm too tired." She said, raising her head up.
"Eat or I'll feed you like a mama bird would feed her baby."
Giving her wife a glare, Arizona looked down at her soup and drink, tears pricking her eyes.
"Hey... what's wrong?" Callie's leaned over and rubber her wife's leg.
"You bought me some Gatorade without having to ask for it." She sniffed. "I'm tired, I feel terrible, I look terrible, I've been terrible to you. And here you are being sweet."
"I know how you love the drink when you're sick." Yeah, she was definitely going to make her wife take a pregnancy test after dinner. "You don't feel well, honey. It's okay." Callie said, rubbing her back. "Just take a few bites and drink what's in your glass and then you can go back to bed."
"Can't you just pretend I ate?" Arizona whined taking a sip of her soup, making a face when the hot liquid passed through her throat.
"Not good?"
"I don't know I can't taste. I'm sure it is, it was just the hot liquid on my throat."
"I should make you some hot tea with honey. Maybe that will help your throat."
"This is find really." Arizona stopped her. Taking in a few more spoon fulls of soup, she leaned her head over on the brunettes shoulder. "I don't think I can eat anymore."
"You don't have too, at least you got a little something on your stomach." Callie wrapped her arms around her wife. "You need to drink though baby. You really should be pushing liquids."
"I know.. I will after a long nap. I promise." She said, her stomach rumbling again. "Oh no." She said, grabbing her belly. Knowing she wouldn't make it inside to the bathroom, she ran over to the nearest bush and she emptied her stomach.
Callie quick on her feet went to hold the weak blonde up as she puked. "It's okay, honey." She said, rubbing her hand on the small of her wife's back. "I got you."
"No, let go." Arizona said wiping her mouth.
"No." She said, brushing blonde hair out of her wife's face. "Eww.." She groaned when she grabbed some that had puke in it.
"I told you." Arizona raised up and leaned against her wife.
"You good?" She asked, looking around to find something to wipe her hand on. Seeing nothing was in site, she rubbed it on the back of her wife's shirt.
"Yeah. I think so."
"Come on, let's get you in the shower, honey." She said, leading her to the downstairs bathroom.
"I can do it." She said, pushing Callie's hands away from her.
Watching her wife pull her shirt over her body, Callie backed away to give her some space. She knew how moody the blonde could get when she was sick. "I was just trying to help."
"I'm a big girl I can handle it." She huffed as Callie turned the water on for her.
Digging around through the medicine cabinet door, she pulled out a box. "Here. I want you to take this." She said holding out the test.
"What are you trying to say?"
"Nothing?"
"No, you're saying I'm being a bitch! We've already took a test last week and it was negative, why take another?" She took the box from her wife and set it down on the counter.
"I'm not saying that at all. It was just last time you were sick you were.. pregnant." She whispered. "And I was just thinking maybe you are now?" She shrugged. "I mean.. You did cry because I brought you some Gatorade."
"It was negative, why keep wishing for a different outcome only to be let down?"
"Okay!" Callie held up her hands to her wife.
"I can take a shower alone." She said, opening the door for her wife to leave.
"Arizona?" Callie said. "I was only.." She sighed, deciding it was best to shut up. "I'll be in the kitchen if you need me." She said, walking out of the room.
Deciding to appease her wife and also her own mind, Arizona peed on the stick and placed it to the side as she slipped in the shower to wash off. Not waisting any time mainly because she was tired, she hurriedly washed and dried herself off, slipping on the white housecoat that hung behind the door. Picking up the stick, she read the same reading as last time. Sighing, she walked through the house, slowing down just enough to throw the pregnancy test on the counter near her wife as she continued upstairs to the bedroom.
Trying not to piss her wife off more, Callie stared out into the back yard through the kitchen window as the blonde walked out of the bathroom. Hearing her footsteps get closer, Callie turned to look just as Arizona threw the pregnancy test on the counter in front of her. Picking up the stick, she read the negative reading. Sighing to herself, she rubbed her hands over her face to try to think of a way to get back on her wife's good side. She knew the reason Arizona was being so hateful was because of her cold, but still something else was up.
Going back outside, she collected her wife's dishes and came back inside to clean up. After spending a few minutes downstairs, she grabbed her wife's drink and walked up to their room. Sitting the drink down on her wife's nightstand, Callie walked over to the dresser and pulled some clothes out to change into after her shower. Looking back at the bed where her wife hadn't even acknowledge she was even in the room, Arizona was laying down facing the brunettes side of the bed with a bunch of used tissues already strewn around her. It was a good thing she really loved Arizona because she used to get in fights with Cristina when she did that while they lived in the apartment together.
Callie had been in the shower for more than twenty minutes, shaving her legs and other.. parts. Turning around to grab the shampoo, she saw a shadow. Almost jumping out of her skin when she saw Arizona standing there in front of the shower door. "Jesus, Arizona." She said, grabbing the shampoo bottle. "You could warn someone." She turned away from the blonde and the shower head to wash her hair.
Arizona felt bad she had snapped at Callie like she had. It wasn't the brunettes fault that she was sick nor upset. It had been a letdown for her when she had took the pregnancy test last weekend. She knew chances of it taking were a long shot. Just because she had got pregnant the first time right off didn't mean she would this time. When Callie turned her back to her to washed her hair, she opened the shower door and climbed in latching onto her wife's back.
Feeling her wife wrap her arms around her, Callie turned her head to look at the blonde out of the corner of her eye. "I'm sorry." She heard her mumble. Placing her hand on top of the blondes she then leaned her head against her wife's, silently accepting her apology.
"What's wrong honey?"
"I don't mean to be hateful. I'm sorry." She said as Callie turned around and hugged her back. "You know how I am when I'm sick. I get grumpy and grouchy..."
"And bitchy..." Callie added.
"And bitchy." She agreed. "I'm sorry."
"Let's take this off." The brunette said, pulling the tie of wet rob. "Something else bothering you?" She asked.
"No, not really."
"Mmhmm.." Callie said, leaning her head back into the fountain of water to rinse the soap out of her hair as Arizona still held on to her. "Hit me."
"Uhh.. okay." Arizona said, smacking her wife on the butt.
"Hey... what was that for?" Callie asked, rubbing her stinging butt where Arizona smacked it.
"You said, 'hit me'. So I did."
"Alright smart ass. Someone's feeling better!" She said, massaging conditioner into her hair. "You didn't just throw that pregnancy test at me because you were feeling bad, something else is bothering you. So, hit me with it. Did I do something?"
"No."
"Well, I'm not a mind reader so tell me.. it has to be something with me asking you to take the test because that's when you really got scruffy with me and threw me out of the room."
"I took one last week, why do it again to only be disappointed.. yet again?"
"Okay, time out." Callie said, rinsing her hair one last time before turning the water off. "I feel this isn't a conversation that should be had in a shower." She said grabbing two towels.
After drying off and putting on their pajamas, the two climbed into bed even though it was still early. "Babe, it's still early, sometimes those tests can give false negatives." Callie said, leaning back on the headboard.
"Twice though?"
"It happens." Callie shrugged.
"But I don't feel like I did last time. Last time I felt pregnant, so the test is right."
"But I feel, this isn't why you're mad? You're let down, I'm let down too, but these things take time. We know that."
"I know. I'm just disappointed." Arizona sighed. "I put a lot of work in surprising you with everything and making that night memorable and it didn't work. And then taking the test yet again and being sick on top of it, I just got mad. Not at you, but just in general."
"Honey." Callie put her hand on the blondes back. "It was special. And if it turns up you're not pregnant..."
"I'm not." Arizona cut in.
"If." Callie stressed. "It turns out you're not pregnant, we try again and it will still be special." She said, pulling her wife over for a hug.
"Maybe you.. you're right." She said, before letting out a loud sneeze.
"Thank you for that." Callie said wiping her neck.
"Sorry. I don't want you to catch this." She said, taking a tissue out of the box.
"I think it's a little late for that with your puke and snot rags everywhere." Callie said, causing the blonde to laugh.
"I'm sorry, Callie." She said cuddling into her wife again.
"You want to make it up to me?" She asked, scooting down in the bed, and pulling the blonde with her.
"Yes."
"Okay, first off.. drink some of your Gatorade. And tomorrow, I'll take you to visit Addison and we'll have her do a blood test to see if you're pregnant and the home tests just aren't picking it up."
"Callie.."
"Arizona, I think you are, you took those cheap tests. You can take a dollar test or a hundred dollar test sometimes they don't work." She said, seeing her wife roll her eyes. "You were crying because I brought you Gatorade."
"Fine, I'll go to the doctor in the morning." Arizona said, making her wife happy. Reaching over she grabbed her glass and drank what was left inside, immediately wishing she hadn't because her stomach was at it again.
"Alright Mrs. Arizona. What are you here for today?" Addison asked walking into the room. She didn't know her friend was coming in until she saw her chart hanging by the door, so she was a little surprised.
"Because Callie is making me." She replied. Her wife was suppose to come with her but by the time Arizona had some free time, the brunette had a surgery so she was flying solo today.
"And why is that?" The red head asked, sitting down on the stool.
"She says I'm moody."
"Are you moody?"
"I've been sick for four days. I'm moody when I'm sick." She rolled her eyes.
"Mmhmm.. Sick how?"
"I've had some kind of virus and cold or something on top of it."
"Okay, well let's just find out if that's been a virus or morning sickness."
"It will be a virus, I took two tests and they've both been negative but Callie insisted I come here to have a blood test."
"Well, home tests aren't always accurate. Have you been feeling any different like last time?"
"No."
"Well. I'll do a blood test and we'll know once and for all." Addison said, gloving up to draw her blood. "So how was she when you got the negative results?"
"She was fine, she just keeps saying these things take time. Said that we will try again my next cycle."
"Do you want to try again?"
"Of course, I'm just aggravated because I went through the whole process to make that night special and it didn't take." She sighed as Addison finished taking her blood. "Our one wedding anniversary is in three weeks. Do you know we've spent over half that trying to get pregnant?"
"Well first off, it's Callie, she thinks every time is special. And man the time has flown by. I can't believe you've been married that long."
"Yeah, feels just like yesterday." Arizona's grinned turned flat. "I think if it doesn't work next time I'm going to see if Callie's okay with waiting a while. I feel like we've just been so focused with trying to get pregnant we've missed the joys of our first year."
"Are you kidding me?" Addison laughed. "You've been together what? Three years now?"
"Three years in May."
"Well, you've basically been married since ya'll met. You've been inseparable, maybe even more than a happy married couple. It's a little ridiculous really."
"Yeah." Arizona smiled again, thinking about her wife. "She did feel like my wife way before we were married."
"See! And you're not a quitter Arizona Robbins, you're a doer." She patted her friend in the leg. "I'll be right back. I'll put a rush on this." The red head said, walking out of the room.
Arizona had been waiting in the room for several minutes when her phone beeped.
- Hi, my surgery's already finished. I'm heading over. - XO Callie -
- There is really no need honey, we're almost finished here, just waiting on the results. - XO Arizona -
- You don't want me too? :( - XO Callie -
- Of course I do. I'm just saying by the time you walk over, I'll be finished already. - XO Arizona -
- I don't care. Maybe we can grab some lunch at the deli for the staff on the way back. ;) See you in a few. Amor? - XO Callie -
- Love! - XO Arizona. -
Seconds later, Addison walked back through the door with a small smile on her face. When the blonde saw the way she was looking she could tell Addison already knew the results and it didn't go in her favor. "I want to take a look around and see what's going on inside there." She said, pulling the ultrasound machine closer to the bed.
"Why?" Arizona asked when she scooted back and laid on the bed. "Is something wrong, should I call Callie?" She asked, her voice a little worried.
"No, no there isn't anything wrong, sweetie. I just wanna make sure everything's still up to par." She shrugged. "You know the drill."
"Yeah yeah. It's going to be a little cold." The blonde rolled her eyes as she pulled her paints a little lower around her waist then pulled up her shirt.
"Actually it's going to be really cold." Addison switched on her.
"You're such a smart ass." She laughed as the red head moved the wand around on her stomach.
"You know, you should really learn to watch your mouth. I don't want my niece or nephew hearing that." She said, turning the screen around for her friend.
It didn't register with Arizona what Addison had said until she turned the screen. "Wha.. You.. I am?" She leaned up to see better, causing Addison's hand to slip.
"Whoa.." Addison laughed, as she gently pushed the blondes shoulder back for her to lay back down. "Let me find it again." She said, moving around the wand around again.
"I'm really?" She looked up at the red head.
"Yes, you're really." She said, getting the picture back up on the screen. "See, right there it is."
"Why didn't it show up on the tests?" She said, with tears glistening in her eyes. She would have sworn that it hadn't took. She wasn't feeling anything like she did the last time she was pregnant.
"You're a doctor Arizona, you know those things aren't always accurate. Most don't give a false positive, but can sometimes give a false negative. That's why most of us doctors tell our patients to come in after a few weeks instead of taking an at home test." Addison said, printing out a few pictures. "Give me just a minute."
A hundred things were going through her head at the moment and the main one was she wanted to stop her wife from coming in. Grabbing her phone, she sent off a quick text to her wife.
- I'm on my way out, meet me at the deli in a few? Love you. - XO Ari -
- Okay, passing by there now. What did the test say? - XO Cal -
She didn't want to tell her wife over the phone that she actually was pregnant so she decided a little white lie would be okay for now.
- Same as others. - XO Ari -
- Awe, I'm sorry. :( - XO Cal -
- Don't be, like you said yesterday, it takes time. :) I'll see you in a few. - XO Ari -
"Is that Cal? Did you tell her?" Addison asked, finishing up.
"No, I don't want to tell her over the phone." She replied. "Wait." Stopping the red head before she removed the ultrasound. "I want to see my baby again." She said looking over at the screen in awe, thinking of a way to surprise her wife with her news.
"You're right at four weeks pregnant, so that puts you're due date around May 20th. Give or take a few days."
Nodding her head. "I need a favor Addison." She said, thinking of a perfect time to tell her.
"Okay?"
"Don't mention anything to Callie. I want to tell her in some special way. She thinks my blood test was negative." She said, finally taking her eyes off the screen. "Is that bad I'm lying to her?"
"No." Addison chuckled. "It's sweet you want to surprise her, unless... you're just doing it because your afraid of the same outcome as last?" She raised her eyebrow.
"Well, I'm not going to lie.. it's in the back of my mind, but no. That's not why. I want it to be special just like when we conceived."
"I'm sure it will be. Ohh.. you're anniversary!" Addison thought.
"I was thinking the same thing." Arizona smiled. "I'll also be seven weeks by then." She furrowed her brows. "Maybe I shouldn't wait that long, I don't want her to think I didn't tell her because I was afraid."
"That will be the last thing on her mind, trust me." She smiled and wiped the remaining gel off the blondes stomach. "Now, I know you'll be a little nervous until you pass that mark, most expecting mothers are that have experienced a miscarriage. But, I'm here and if you ever feel the need to come just to ease your mind.. day or night, just call me. I'll be more than happy to help."
"Thanks Addie." Arizona said, sitting up. "I can't believe it." She grinned. "Things are going to finally turn around for us, I feel it."
"I think so too. So.. now that you know, do you feel any different?"
"No." She thought back. "I still don't feel like I did last time, but maybe I will once it sinks in. It's going to be so hard to hide it from Calliope."
"Well, you know you could just tell her."
"I know." Arizona said, taking the pictures from her doctor. "But if I were her and I missed her ultra sound, I would want her to surprise me. So that's what I'm going to do, she'll never expect it."
"If you keep that crying up she will." Addison said, handing her friend a tissue.
"Yeah, I'll have to work on that. I guess there is subtle things after all huh?" She giggled.
"Yep." She said, rubbing her friends leg. "You better get going or she'll hunt you down."
"Yeah. Thanks Ads." She said, hugging her friend, trying to get all her excitement out before having to put on a front in front of her wife.
"You're welcome."
Soooo... YEY! Let's hope this one is different!
