Chapter 103
Previously
"Right there ba.. baby." Callie whispered, hesitating when she felt immense wetness.
"Oh god." Arizona moaned in pleasure. "Ooooh... Oh god... Oh god." She looked down between their legs. "Uh-oooh."
"Uh-oh." She looked down at her wife with a shocked face after she felt something within her pop. She couldn't believe it. Out of all the times and places her water had to break was during sex in their bed and all over her wife. "Oh god. I'm sorry."
"What the.." Callie looked down between them when she felt the hot liquid spread all over her. "Oh my god." She propped herself up on her elbows to look. Her eyes going wide when she realized what just happened. "I'm... sorry babe, but this is so gross." She said as she saw liquid stills dripping out of her wife. "Arizona, get off the bed." She said as it took all she had to hold back a gag. She loved her wife dearly and would do anything for her, but having her amniotic fluid all over her was a little too much.
"Towels, Callie. Towels." She said as her naked wife quickly jumped from the bed and ran to the bathroom to grab towels to try to save their bed.
The brunettes mind was so frazzled. "I don't know what to do first." She quickly ran back to the bed, looking between herself, her wife and the mess on the sheets. She was soaking wet herself from all the fluids, but she had to forget about that right now. "God." She grumbled. She didn't know whether to help her wife get off the hardwood floor and into the bathroom so it wouldn't leak through the cracks of the hardwood or try to clean up their bed. She didn't want it to soak into their mattress either. "Ugh."
"Callie, breathe." Arizona said, taking a towel from her wife and holding it between her legs. "Dry the bed." She told the panicked brunette as she clamped the towel between her legs. Reaching for her robe on the chair, she threw it over her naked body and tied it around her while Callie quickly throwing the pillows and covers away from the bed and striped the sheet off to clean it up as she kept and eye on her wife at the same time. A thousand different things were running through her mind as she tried to clean up.
"Are you okay? Are you hurting?" She asked blotting the towels.
"I'm okay." She said, moving the cloth from between her legs to see if she was still leaking. "I'm okay." She repeated, seeing the puddle on the floor beneath her, Arizona decided to try to make her way to the bathroom to clean up.
"Arizona. No." The brunette said as she saw her wife slowly walking to the bathroom. Looking back to the bed, "Ah, fuck it." She said, quickly turning on the ceiling fan above the bed to dry the mattress.
Arizona tried to make her way to the bathroom as she held the towel between her legs. Hearing her wife, she turned her attention to her as her wet foot slipped on the smooth floor. "Whoa.."
"Be careful." Callie lunged for her, giving her some stability so she wouldn't fall. "Where are you going?"
"I need to shower, and so do you." She looked at her still naked wife. "I'm wet in more ways than one and I don't want Addison to see that." She said, walking into the bathroom and turning on the hot water in the shower. She was keeping her calm at the moment unlike her wife.
"Oh god." The brunette said as realization hit her. Her eyes widened yet again when she thought about what was going on. "I..." She looked around the room. "I.. I can't breathe." She retrieved a hand towel that was lying across the rack. Her breathing becoming heavy. "Oh god.. Oh god." She said, placing her hands in the sink. "I don't." She shook her head.
If Arizona didn't know better, she would swear Callie was the one that was going into labor and not her. "Callie?" She said, trying to calm her wife.
"I don't know what to do Arizona. I.. I can't think. What am I suppose to be doing. I..." She looked around the bathroom. "Pack.. pack a bag." She said, talking to herself. "Why the hell haven't we already done this."
"Callie?" She tried again as the brunette pulled a bag from the bathroom closet. "Calliope."
Callie was in her own little world, trying to think what she needed to grab for her wife before they left, to even hear the blonde calling her. "Toothpaste, toothbrush." She said, opening the medicine cabinet and grabbing both items. "Deodorant." She said, looking around for the tube. "Where is you're deodorant?" She asked, opening the bottom cabinet under the sink.
"Dr. Torres." She yelled like she does when she's scolding one of her employees at work. She had called her wife several times, getting no response from her.
"What?" She yelled, not meaning to be hateful.
"First off, you're running around here naked like a chicken with its head cut off." Arizona told her. "Breathe, Callie." She said, seeing her wife take a deep breath. "In our walking closet is my overnight case. My travel toothpaste, toothbrush and deodorant are already in there along with yours. I just need you to put my body wash in there after we take a hot shower." She said as a loud clap of thunder crashed over top them.
"Fuck!" Callie yelled as the loud noise startled her.
"You're really going to have to start working on your language." She said, taking the towel from between her legs and throwing it in the hamper even though fluid was still dripping slowly out of her.
Hearing the rain begin to pour down on their roof, the brunette saw a flash of lightening out of their small windows in the room. "You're one to talk." She said taking a long calming breath.
"Charlee's and my clothes are packed. You just need to get the car seat put in the Land Rover or have you already done that?"
"No." She said as tears glistened in her eyes. "Arizona.." She said. It was like it was finally hitting her that the baby was really coming.
"Why are you upset?" She said as Callie walked up to her.
"I'm... I've waited for this moment for so long." She sighed. "We're going to be parents." She softly smiled.
"We are." Arizona grinned back. "Let's get in the shower and then we'll make sure everything's ready when we get out."
"We have to hurry, your water broke." Callie said, starting to go back in panic mode.
"We have time. I'm not feeling contractions yet. After we bathe we'll call Addie and then get everything in the car."
"Of course it starts pouring rain right now." She said as the sound became louder. "I'll have to pull the car into the garage to get the seat in." She said, grabbing her robe off the back of the door.
"Callie you don't have to do it now, I'm sure you'll be back and forth from the hospital before we come home."
"No." She shook her head. "I'm not leaving either of you. I have to make sure everything is packed. I need to grab some of my clothes too." She said, trying to think of everything they needed to do before they left.
"Okay" The blonde said, taking her hand. "First we need to wash off." She said, pulling the brunette in the shower with her.
"Kay."
After taking a shower and getting dressed, Arizona sat down with the dogs on the couch and waited for her wife to gather their things before heading to the hospital. "Did you call your parents?" Arizona asked as she watched Callie walking back and forth, making sure everything was ready.
"Yes, I called Aria and Addison also." Callie said, throwing the overnight bag over her shoulder.
"My parents?"
"No, not yet. I'll do that now." Callie said, noticing her hand nervously shaking when she grabbed the other bag and pulling her phone out of her pocket. She was excited but yet nervous that the time had finally come. Dialing her mother in laws number, she waited until the older Robbins answered the phone.
Arizona knew, that if she didn't put the dogs out herself that they'd be left to destroy the house before they returned. "Come on boys." Arizona rose from the couch and made her way out back to put the dogs up while Callie ran around helpless. "When I get back you'll have a little sister." She pet their heads before locking the gate behind her.
"Hello?"
"Code pink mom, I repeat... code pink." Callie said, quickly walking into their garage and throwing the bags into the back of the SUV. All that was going through her mind was to get the blonde to the hospital as soon as possible.
"This ain't another false alarm?" She asked.
"No mom." Jumping in the vehicle and opening the garage door. "Her water broke about forty-five minutes ago." She said backing out of the space to pull out of the drive way, feeling like their was something she was missing.
"Daniel, get up." She heard Barbara on the other line. "It's time.. It's time."
"We're on our way now, I have to go."
"Okay, we'll see you there."
Arizona walked back and sat on the couch where the brunette directed her after getting dressed. She insisted on helping gather their things, but Callie had told her she had it handled. She quietly sat there and watching her wife run around checking and rechecking their list until she went to call her mother. When she heard her wife start the car in the garage, she knew then she was officially back in panic mode yet again. The blonde was getting a little freaked out, but she had tried to keep her cool during all of this because Callie was well passed freak out mode. Hearing the car back up, Arizona got up off the couch and walked over to the front door of her home and peaked out the window. Seeing the brunetted back out of their driveway. "Oh my god, Callie." She shook her head. "I'm the one that's suppose to be panicking right now." She opened the door and walked out on the porch as she watched her pull out of her driveway. She couldn't figure out how in the world she would forget the most important thing. The blonde leaned on the post of the porch as she watched the tail lights on the car begin to fade in the distance. Barely seeing the glowing red brakes in the dark, she saw her wife make a U-turn in the middle of the road and drive back into their driveway.
"Oh god." Callie jumped out of the vehicle and ran through the rain and up the front porch steps, grabbing the umbrella that was propped up by the door. "I'm so sorry baby." She said, opening the black rain guard and leading her wife out to the Land Rover. "I'm so sorry."
"Callie."
"I'm sorry." She said, closing the door and going around to get in the drivers side again. "This. Never. Happened!" She told her, backing out of their drive and pulling out into the street.
Arizona was beginning to feel very light cramps in her stomach but she was afraid to voice it to her wife at the moment. Callie had been on edge more times than not since her water broke and she didn't want to frazzle her anymore, but she really needed her wife to cool her jets because it was now her time to panic. "So..." She said, trying to get the brunettes mind off everything. "So much for one more time huh?" She reached for her wife's hand as the rain poured down on them.
"Mmhmm." Callie hummed, not really paying much attention to what the blonde was saying as she navigated through the city limits. "Why is this damn window so foggy?" She said pulling her hand from her wife's and wipping at the glass.
"Well it is raining and you're breathing heavy, so there ya go." Arizona could feel her wife's nervous just by touching her wife. "Callie." She squeezed her thigh. "Callie slow down, it's pouring rain and the roads could be slick. We have plenty of time." She said, taking her wife's hand again.
"I know." She said, slowing down at her wife's plea.
"Pull over." She sighed, when her wife's hand kept tensing in hers.
"What? Why?" She glanced over to her. "Oh god, have the contractions started?" She quickly slowed down and pulled to the side of the curb.
Arizona waited until her wife put the car in park before she said anything to her. "Callie I need you to calm down, okay? Breathe."
"Arizona, I'm..."
"No. Don't tell me you're fine or you're okay, or you're just trying to get me to the hospital." She said, maybe a little to mean. "You have been freaking the hell out since my water broke. You need to focus. I." She emphasized the word. "I. Need you to focus." She told her wife. "Charlee needs you to focus." Callie looked at her wide eyes. "You've been so calm and you've managed to keep me half calm through the false labor and everything else lately. I need you to remain that way. Please, because if you keep freaking out it's going to get me anxious and nervous and then I'll freak the hell out. I really need my calm Calliope right now, because I'm scared Callie. Please.. please calm down for me."
Nodding, she knew her wife was right and she felt kinda embarrassed with the way she was acting or over reacting actually. "I'm sorry." Callie took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "I'm sorry, Arizona." She shook her head. "I know it's scary baby, I'm.." Shrugging. "I'm a little scared too." She admitted, turning towards the blonde. "But everything's going to be fine." She leaned over and gave her wife a hug. "Everything is going to go smoothly, okay sweetie?"
"Okay."
"It's okay to be scared honey." She squeezed her hand. "I'm sorry if I upset you, it's just a lot you know? I had planned on double checking everything tonight in case she was to come anytime, but I guess she just didn't want to wait." She said as she pulled the car back on the road. She could see the nervousness in her wife's eyes so she was going to do her best to stay calm herself, but getting ready to be a mom for the first time is a little more nerve wracking than she expected.
"It's okay."
"No it's not, babe." She said, pulling down the same street as the hospital. Seeing fear in her wife's eyes made her gather her emotions and put herself back together. "I went all crazy when you needed me. I'm sorry." She brought her wife's hand to her mouth and kissed her knuckles. "I promise, you have my full attention now."
"I understand it. It's scary to you too, I'm not taking that away from you."
"It is, we're about to be mommies. That in itself is scary." Callie said pulling into the hospital parking lot.
"Go ahead and park." The blonde pointed. "I can walk. I want to walk in with you one last time.. just the two of us." She looked at the brunette. "The next time I walk out our lives will have changed forever."
"I love you." She softly smiled.
"Love you too." Arizona kissed the top of her hand before releasing it so she could park the car. Just as Callie exited the car to help her wife, Arizona felt a tightening in her stomach. "Oooo..." She moaned as her wife opened her door.
"You okay?" The brunette asked, seeing her wife's face tense up.
"Yeah." She breathed as Callie caressed her thigh.
"You want me to get you a chair?"
"No. I'm okay."
"Well lets get you inside then." Callie said, helping her wife out.
"Addie's waiting right? We don't have to sit around and wait in the ER?"
"No, she's suppose to be here in about an hour, she said she'd have someone waiting to take us to a room." She said leading her wife through the parking lot and in the doors of the hospital. "She said by the time you get into a room and hooked up to the monitors she'll be here."
"And my mom?" Arizona asked, her grip tightening on the brunettes hand.
"She's on her way." The brunette said as she saw a familiar face behind the ER desk. "What are you doing here Grey?"
"Well tonight's my night in the pit, but thankfully I answered the phone when Dr. Montgomery called because now I'm on her services, so thank you for that." Meredith winked at the blonde.
"The pit is hell." Callie laughed, helping her wife sit down in the wheel chair the doctor had for her. "I don't miss it as all, it was always the worst twenty four hours of my monthly schedule."
"You're lucky." She chuckled, taking the breaks off the chair. "Just few more months or so and I'll be a fellow and I won't have to live this hell ever again, I'll be able to delegate."
"You should have went into peds. I would so hire you at the clinic."
"Where the hell have you been?" The resident asked her friend.
"Uhh?"
"There's a reason I've been helping with your wife when she comes in Torres." Meredith shook her head. "I've been on the vagina squad for months now."
"You're?" She questioned, trying to remember. "I thought you were going into general?"
"I couldn't make up my mind, but then I helped a woman give birth in an elevator and it kinda hit me. I just couldn't get enough of those babies after that."
"That's awesome. Hey, you have to consider the clinic then, I'm sure I can't offer you what Seattle Grace can, but I can offer a better schedule."
"I'll keep that in mind."
"Can we.. I don't know, save the chit chat until later?" Arizona asked, breaking them out of their conversation.
"Yep, I have you a room all ready." The doctor pushed her towards the elevator. "What do you say we go have this baby. Plus I need to get out of here before Yang finds out I'm out of the pit. I'm not giving this case up."
"Callie?" The blonde looked back to her wife.
"I'm here." She grabbed her hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze as they walked into the elevator.
"So what time did your water break?"
"I... I don't know." Arizona said, trying to recall the time.
"Your dad left about 7:30 - 8:00 so I say around 9:00 - 9:30?"
"So..." Meredith said, looking at her watch. "ninety minutes or so?"
"About, yeah." Callie said as the doors opened on the labor and delivery ward.
"Any pain?"
"Yeah. It started when I got in the car."
"Okay. We'll get you changed and hooked up to a fetal monitor and see how that baby's doing." She said as she wheeled her down the hall and into her room. "Your gown is on the bed, I'll give you a few minutes to get changed." She said, leaving the room to give them some privacy.
"Why didn't you tell me you were hurting early? I asked you if you were okay and you said yes." Callie asked after Meredith shut their door.
"You were going crazy already, I didn't want to put that on top of you too. You already left me standing on the porch, there was no telling what you'd do if I told you I was starting to have contractions." The blonde let a hiss out between her teeth when she felt the pain again.
"It's okay, babe." The brunette kneeled down eye level with her wife, rubbing her back as she road out her pain. "Also, what part of this never happened don't you understand?" She said, trying to keep Arizona's mind off the pain.
"You left me on the porch." Arizona said in disbelief.
"I'm sorry." She chuckled, seeing her wife's face soften, signaling the contraction was easing.
"They're not lasting long, hopefully that'll be the case the whole time." She said as she felt the cramping ease up.
"I'm sorry honey, but it will only get worse." Callie sadly said, looking at her wife. "It'll be okay though. I'm here every step of the way. Okay, love?"
Nodding. "Calliope." Arizona said as her wife helped her stand from the chair.
"Hmm?"
"I'm really scared." She looked up at her. "What if something happens to her during labor, or me?"
"I know you're scared baby." Callie cupped her face. "I really do, but you're going to be fine, both of you are. You're in one of the top hospitals in the country and you have the best doctor in the U.S. delivering our baby. You." She stressed. "And Charlee will be fine. I promise."
"Callie don't." She shook her head that was still between caramel hands. "I thought we learned not to make promises after the last time."
"Arizona, I'm not letting some idiotic cretin stop me from promising things to my beautiful wife." She said, kissing her pink lips. "I promise, nothing will happen besides you giving birth to a healthy baby girl."
"But sometimes things happen that are out of our control."
"Ari." Callie sighed. "You're the one that's freaking out now you realize that, right?" She smiled, trying to get her wife to calm down.
"I'm serious." She said, grabbing her wife's hands from her face. "Promise me you'll take good care of our baby."
"Arizona..."
"Promise." She said louder. "And don't get all depressed because I'm gone. I want you to move on and find some happiness again, for Charlee." The blonde knew she was thinking of the worst case scenario, but how could she not with all the things that have happened to them. "But promise, whoever you find, don't take them to the river. That's our thing, but you can make it a you and Charlee thing." She said as she watched her wife's face drop. "And our bed. I don't want you to sleep with anyone else in my bed, even if I am dead. So you'll need to get a new one."
"No Arizona, stop! You're not going to die. Do you hear me." Callie couldn't stand to hear her talk this way.
"But women die during child birth all the time. So promise me."
"NO!" Callie said, loudly, jerking her hands out of her wife's hold. "No. I can not promise that Arizona, I've already told you. You die, I die."
"Callie.."
"No." She shook her head. "If something were to happen to you, they may as well dig my grave too, because I'm going with you!"
"But.."
"No." Callie growled. She had heard enough of her wife's fears. She knew the blonde was scared, but she was too. Arizona was right, things go wrong all the time, but she knew everything was going to be fine. So if she had to be the bad guy right now, she was going to do it because right now her wife needed it just like she did earlier. "Enough of your nonsense. Now you get out of those clothes.." She said, grabbing the gown off the bed. "and put this on and you get your ass in that bed.." She pointed. "because we're getting ready to have a baby. A baby that we had a hell of a lot of fun making, and I don't know about you but I plan on doing it with you a couple more times in the future. So stop talking this crazy talk. Now put this on because you're going to lay in that bed and you're going to cry, scream, yell and cuss me.. Hell you may even try to kick me out of the room for a while, but know... I'm not going anywhere. I am going to be by your side every step of the way. We're in this together, whatever you can't do I will. And when it's all said and done, we are going to have a perfectly healthy little girl. Then we're going to sit in that bed hours from now and hold her for the first time and tell her how much we love her."
Arizona just stood there wide eyed at her wife as she ranted. She didn't know what to say to her after that and quiet frankly she was sort of afraid to say anything. Deciding to just do as the brunette said, she got undressed with the help of her wife. After getting her gown on, Callie helped her get comfortable in the bed. "That's the Calliope I needed earlier." She took the brunettes hand in hers as the resident came back into the room.
Dun Dun Dunn...
This story will slow down quiet a bit for the next few chapters. Instead of a few week time jumps every chapter, the span will be two or three days for the next several updates.
Alas, the story is slowly coming to an end. I figure around 10-15 more chapters give or take, so fair warning.
I have the other Calzona fic (Then There Was You, but I've changed the name to When You Love Someone) I've been talking about already lined out and the first chapter almost finished so look for that after The River has been completed. And yes, those updates will also be twice a week. Monday and Thursdays.
And last but not least. I'm trying to decide what to do. I have several more things in store for the future involving Callie, Arizona and Charlee in The River (sequel), but I'm not sure if I should just post them as one shots or just do a part 2.. what do you guys think?
