Chapter 105
"What?" Callie looked between her wife's legs and gasped. "Oh my god, babe." She smiled with tears in her eyes. "I can see her head." Wiping tears that fell from her cheeks. "She's really coming baby." She said looked up at her wife, who had a agonizing look on her face. "Just breathe sweetie." She rubbed her arm as her face stiffened.
"I am breathing!" She growled at her wife. "Why don't you switch places with me so you can lay here and try to focus on breathing while something the size of a baby elephant comes out of your vagina." She was in pain and it felt like no one around her cared right now, not even her wife.
Callie was a little taken back by her wife's little outburst towards her. Arizona had kept those down to a normal level, but now that it was go time she sure as hell was letting the pain take over. "Geez, Im just trying to be helpful."
"I told you she was coming, but no..." Her voice softened as she grabbed ahold of the bed rails. "..you didn't want to listen to me."
"Callie, keep her leg back."
When Meredith addressed her, the brunette refocused on her task at hand at the moment. "Oh god.." She groaned, looking back down between her wife's legs. "That looks painful." She unconsciously squeezed her legs together.
"IT IS PAINFUL." Arizona yelled.
"Arizona." Callie looked back to her wife. "I know it hurts. I do. The pain has got to be unbelievable honey, but just think.. she'll be here soon." She grinned. "We're getting ready to have a baby."
"I am!" She grumbled. "I am. You're not having anything. You're standing there all excited acting like everything is all peachy while I'm the one in misery."
"Hey!" Callie said sternly to her wife, getting her attention immediately. "We're in this together. There is no I in we. Yes, you have to feel the pain physically but it hurts me to see you like this. I am here and I am going to do what ever I can to help you. So go ahead and yell, scream and cry. If you want to get mad, get mad. But remember I am going to be standing right here coaching you through the birth of our daughter."
Arizona swallowed the lump in her throat when Callie gave it right back to her. "I.. I didn't mean it like that."
"I know you didn't." She held out her hand for the blonde to grab.
"I'd like to apologize in advance for what I'll say to you."
"Apology accepted." Callie said as Arizona had a death grib on her hand. "It's okay, I can take the verbal abuse today. I'll give you a pass. So you can cuss, scream.. whatever you want. It's your day." She leaned down and kissed the blondes sweaty lips. "But you better enjoy it because this is your only chance."
"I have a feeling I'll take full advantage of that." Arizona said, laying their joined hands on her stomach. "She's finally coming."
"She is."
"I want you to hold her first. I know we had a bet, but I've already bonded with her. I want you to hold her."
"Let's just worry about getting her here first." Callie nodded. "I'm so excited and yet nervous." The brunette said as a shiver went through her body at the overwhelming excitement she was feeling at the moment. "Wait.." She said, registering what had happened in the past two minutes. "I thought... I thought she was only at six?" She questioned Meredith as she moved down near the doctor.
"Callie..." The blonde moaned in pain. She really didn't know why she said her wife's name, it was the only thing she could think to say.
"I'm here." She immediately went back to her side.
"She was, remember when Addison said it can turn on a dime?" The resident asked. Receiving a nod, "Well that's where we're at, she's fully dilated and the baby's coming."
"How?" Callie questioned. "I mean.. she was just at six?"
"Well sometimes an exam can speed the process along in the blink of an eye."
"It hurts Callie." Arizona whined feeling tremendous pain and pressure. "Give me the drugs. I need the drugs." She raised her head up to look at Meredith. "And push. I have to push."
"Not yet, just give me a minute Arizona and we'll have you start pushing." Meredith said as she draped a gown over her body.
"Shhh... I know it hurts baby." She said as tears welled up in the blondes eyes. "But it's too late for pain meds." She consoled the blonde. "I know it hurts." She softly caressed up and down her sides. "Hey." She said, getting her wife's attention as the two nurses and Cristina rushed into the room. "I saw the top of her head. I can already tell she's going to be beautiful." She said, trying to keep her wife's attention instead of her seeing the nurses running around setting the room up. "Our lives are changing forever." She grinned in excitement.
"You.. really, you saw her?" She said in between ragged breathes. "She okay?"
"Yes." She laughed as a few tears slipped out of her eyes. "Well, technically I just saw a little dark spot." She chuckled. "But I know it's her." She ran her fingers through blonde hair. "We're getting ready to be mommies. Can you believe it?" She smiled widely at Arizona as she shut her eyes tight trying to ride out the pain.
"Mommies." She breathed, trying to focus on the bigger pitcher. "You.. you can be a mommy. I changed my mind, it hurts to bad. Whose goddamn idea was this?" She spat out as her stomach cramped. "Aghhhh..." She groaned.
"This was your big idea if I recall." Callie lightly teased. She didn't know what to do to get her wife's mind off the pain and it killed her not being able to help more.
"No.. Mine was you having this baby. Next time, this is all on you. Arghhh..."
"You're doing so good honey."
"Would you shut up! This isn't me doing good." She sucked in air through her teeth. "I don't know if I can do this." She whispered, looking up to brown eyes. Arizona was scared of so many things right now. All she kept thinking was different scenarios that could go wrong. What if the baby got stuck and she couldn't push her out? What is she tore while the baby was being pushed? That was one of her main fears. "I take all this back. We can wait four or five more years."
"Look at me." Callie broke her out of her thoughts when she saw the panic look in her eyes. "Breathe with me." She said taking a deep breath and then letting it out slowly several times. "You got this." She nodded. "You are going to make this delivery your bitch." She giggled, hoping that would calm her wife down.
"I'm the bitch.." She shook her head. Arizona thought she was tough. She had been strong on so many occasions, through so many adversities and heartaches, but childbirth was a different situation.
"You got this babe." Callie said as the nurses and Dr. Yang worked around them to get things ready for the baby.
"Stop calling me that!" She said, grabbing on to the bed rails. "I am no ones babe, I am a fucking mess. Get away from me." She pushed Callie's hands away from her. She didn't want to feel anyone touching her at the moment because it irked her even more. "You did this to me."
"I did, but if I recall you were the one that made it a night to remember." Callie gave it right back to her, not knowing if the blonde would get more aggravated or not.
"I'm not ready."
"You don't have a choice, Arizona. You can do this. I believe in you when you don't believe in yourself. I know you can." She said as her mother and Barbara rushed through the door when they saw all of the commotion.
"What's wrong?" Barbara rushed to the bedside to be near her daughters.
"The beast is crowning." Callie snickered, looking up at Barbara and her mom.
"Calliope." The blonde gritted through her teeth.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"I suggest you shut up, unless want to watch your daughter come into this world through the window of that door."
Barbara and Lucia was a little taken back by Arizona's more than feisty mood. Callie on the other hand was expecting the blonde to act like this all along. "Boy you really are taking advantage of that free pass, huh."
"Arizona, dear you need to just calm down." Her mom grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "Thousands and thousands of women do this everyday sweetie."
"Will you people stop touching me!" She jerked her hand out of her mothers. "I'm getting ready to give birth to what feels like a big chunker, I don't need people petting on me."
"Okay Arizona." Meredith said after getting everything ready. "Are you ready to meet your little girl?"
She reached for her wife's hand as she looked up to her. Yeah, she didn't want anyone petting or touching her right now, but needed to feel the closeness to Callie before their lives changed forever. Receiving a teary smile and a nod from the brunette. "Yes." She breathed.
"Okay, Mrs. Robbins are you going to help hold her legs?" Dr. Grey took authority over everyone in the room. Barbara and the girls hadn't discussed her helping out. As far as she knew she was just going to be in the room for moral support just like Lucia. She would love to be involved, but if the girls wanted to do this on their own she was more than okay with that too.
"I..uhh.."
"Mother." She heard the older woman's hesitance. "Just grab my fucking leg for God sacks." Arizona growled, causing Barbara to quickly grab her daughters left leg.
"Okay, grab the back of her knee.." Cristina addressed the two women standing by the blondes side. "..and the bottom of her foot." She said as the blonde laid out in front of everyone. The Korean could really give a few jabs to Arizona, but after seeing her bite Callie's and her mothers head off, Cristina wanted no part in that. The blonde didn't care though, she was at the point where she wouldn't mind if Mark was the one delivering this baby. She wanted her out now at any cost.
Reaching down, Callie gave her wife a kiss. "Let's do this mama." She whispered, kissing her wife's sweaty forehead one last time. "I love you."
"Callie?" Arizona took a breath and looked up to her wife. "Please, shut up." She said as Lucia came up and dabbed her wet forehead with the damp cloth.
Callie didn't take her wife's words to heart, she knew it was only the pain talking. "Whatever you want." She tried to hold back her enthusiasm.
"Alright, Arizona. On your next contraction you're going to grab the back of your thighs." Meredith said as Callie and Barbara held on to her legs as instructed. "Put your chin to your chest and push." She said, watching the blonde take several quick breathes.
"I'm sorry." She looked at the brunette, feeling bad for quieting her. She didn't want their baby born on a bad note.
Nodding her head, Callie let her know it was okay. "Come on honey, you can do this, push." She encouraged.
Arizona took one last breath before grabbing her legs and pushing. "Ahhhhhh..." She moaned after several seconds of pushing. "Is she out?" She knew what the answer would be but she couldn't help for wishing.
"No honey." Callie tried not to laugh. "We still have a ways to go, but you're doing amazing, Arizona." She said caressing her wife's leg as she took another breath. "Let's try pushing again, okay." She coaxed her wife, getting a nod in return. "That's it baby, keep going."
"Just like that.. just like that." Meredith said. "Push, push, push..." She said seeing the head becoming a little more visible. "You're doing great, Arizona."
As the contraction eased up the blonde relaxed back on the bed. "Take breath and come right back at it." The resident coached her as the blonde did what was asked of her. "Come on, come on.. you can do it." She said as the baby came down a little farther with each push. "Yes, yes. You're doing great."
"Big breath in." Meredith said, taking in a large amount of oxygen with Arizona. "And... push."
Taking a breath, she pushed with all of her might, feeling the baby coming further and further, but it still wasn't enough. Callie watched as her wife gave it all she had, every once in a while she would lean down and whisper encouraging words to her wife as she took small breaks. Seeing Arizona in so much pain hurt her heart, but she knew all the pain and suffering she was going through would soon be over. "Oooohhh.." She gave up on pushing any more for the moment. "It hurts." She whined.
"It's okay, honey, take a break." One of the nurses told her as they waited for the next contraction.
"You're doing good, baby girl." Barbara said when she saw her daughter flop back on the bed in exhaustion.
"I'm not mama." She shook her head. "Can't you just pull her out now?" She looked down to Meredith.
"It doesn't work like that." She laughed.
"Babe." Callie said, putting the bed rail down. "You're doing so well. She'll be here before you know it." She said all smiles.
"Can you see her?" She said trying to catch her breath.
"I can see her head. I'll have to admit, it's kinda gross but absolutely amazing." Callie's eyes filled with tears. "Oh honey." She shook her head, feeling so many emotions right now. "This is the moment we've waited for for so long."
"Alright, Arizona I need you to push." The doctor ordered.
"No." She said, taking quick breathes. "I can't." She said, tears filling her eyes. "I'm too tired."
"Come on baby." Callie said, holding the back of the blondes knee with her right hand. "You can do this." She said, as she cupped the back of her neck. "Push, Ari, push." She said, getting the blonde to push again. "Perfect honey... Push, push, push..."
"Arghhhh.." She screamed after pushing for more than ten seconds.
"I can't." She cried, taking quick ragged breathes.
"You can." Callie coached.
"No. I can't." She said, collapsing on the bed. "I change my mind, let's have a c-section."
"Arizona, look at me." She said, seeing the tiredness and exhaustion in her wife's eyes. "You can do this. I know you can. You've been so strong through all the adversities we've been through. You can do this. This is a cake walk..."
"Cake walk my ass." She grumbled through gritted teeth.
"You are strong and brave and I know you can do anything If you put your mind to it. You. Can. Do. This." She said thinking her pep talk worked.
Nodding at her wife's words. Callie was right, so many times when she could have just crumbled to the ground she stood tall. "No." She sighed, laying back against the bed. Right now was just one of those times she couldn't even stand. "I can't. I'm too tired."
"Stop it." Callie grabbed her hand. "You have to do this Arizona. You have to push. Just a few more and her heads out. Come on, honey. Push."
"Stop telling me to push." She glared at Callie. "You did this, so you do it. You push."
"Come on Arizona. She's right here just give me one more push. One more." Meredith said as she tried to coax the blonde.
"I can't.. I'm tired."
Barbara tried to stay quiet during the whole process because she couldn't stand seeing her daughter in pain, but she knew that pain was soon to turn into complete joy. "Arizona Robbins." She scolded, getting the blondes attention. "You have to push young lady. So you take all your pain and frustration and you put it all in this push."
"One more time. That's all." She agreed. Grabbing the back of her thighs, she took one last breath and pushed with all she had.
"That's it baby.. that's it. Her heads almost out." Callie glanced down to see her daughters head. "Push, push, push." Callie said as she saw the baby's head slid out. "Her heads out." She grinned as tears streamed down her face. "You did it."
"Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh..." Arizona screamed through the burning pain, before taking a deep breath. She was feeling the need to push one more time, but the resident stopped her.
"Don't push..." Meredith said as her and a nurse worked to clear the baby's airways.
"Her heads out baby, you are doing so great." Callie motioned for Cristina to take her wife's leg so she could be by her side.
"Is she okay?" Arizona asked, trying to catch her breath. The pain had somewhat subsided so her mind was becoming a little clear.
"Yeah, they've just cleaning her mouth and nose out." Callie leaned her head down near the blondes. "You're doing so good baby."
"Can I sleep now?" She mumbled, unaware of everyone else around them.
"Soon babe, soon." Callie said, running her fingers through blonde damp hair.
"Okay Arizona. One more big push and she'll be out." Meredith said as she finished up clearing the airway.
"Can I wait until tomorrow?" She was too tried to push anymore. "At least let me have a nap first." She said, closing her eyes.
"Arizona Michelle. Look at me." Callie grabbed her chin gently. "You have to push, do you hear me? The baby can't stay in any longer. She needs to come out."
"How did I dilate so fast to have to push so goddamn long?"
"Arizona, there's no more time." Meredith said as she heard the baby's heart rate begin to drop. "She's in distress, she needs to come out."
"Come on baby push. One more time." She looked down as Meredith had her hands around the baby's head.
"I really hate you right now." She grumbled, taking one last breath before pushing.
"I love you too baby. Now come on, push." Callie said, wrapping her arm around her wife's shoulders as she slightly rose off the bed one last time.
"Ooooooohhhhhh..." She yelled, feeling all her pain dissipate as a round of cheers filled the room.
"You did it." Callie cried as she watched Meredith take their baby in her hands. "You did it mama." She leaned down and kissed her wife's temple. "She's here."
"Oh god." Arizona sighed.
"Callie do you want to cut the cord?"
"Yes!" She stated, quickly moving to the end of the bed where Meredith held her baby. "She's so beautiful." She cried as she severed ties from her wife and child.
"Is she okay?" Arizona looked down between her legs as she watched the doctor rub the baby down. "She's not crying, Calliope, help her."
Callie heard the fear in her wife's voice as the baby let out a loud cry. "She's fine sweetie." Callie said as she watched them clean the baby up some. Her heart had swelled ten times the normal size. She never knew a baby could put that much joy in her heart so quickly. "Meredith is just cleaning her up." Callie anxiously running her hands together as she waited to hold her baby.
"Aww..." Arizona breathed, silent tears streaming down her eyes when she heard her daughters cries feel the room.
"Oh Zona, she's beautiful." Barbara said with tears streaming down her face.
"What's going on in here?" Addison walked through the door as she saw the nurses and doctors all working vigorously while Barbara and Lucia took a step back and watched in delight as the two women embraced, welcoming their granddaughter into the world. "You just couldn't wait for me, huh?" She said walking closer to get a look at this baby. "Oh you have a beautiful baby boy, Arizona."
"What?" She raised her head up.
"That got your attention." Addison laughed. "She's beautiful." She winked, rubbing the blondes foot.
"Hi.. hi sweet baby." Callie whispered as the she took her daughter in her arms for the first time. "I'm your mommy." She cried, not even able to take a good look at her daughter from all the waterworks. "I've been very anxiously waiting for you and so has someone else. You want to meet your mama?" She cooed as she bounced the baby in her arms while walking up to the blonde. "She's pretty awesome, I think you'll agree." She smiled up at the blonde while Lucia and Barb excused themselves from the room to give the girls a little privacy as they went and informed everyone of the little bundle that just arrived.
Arizona's heart was about to burst when she saw her two girls walking towards her. She tried to hold back the cry when she met the sparkling brown of her wife's. "Oh Calliope."
"Can you say, hi mama?" She chuckled as she carefully laid the baby down in her wife's arms.
"She's beautiful." She cried, looking at her daughter for the first time. "She looks just like you." She grinned looking up at her wife as everyone else in the room faded around her.
"I think the opposite. She's mama's twin." Callie grinned, wiping the tears out of her eyes. "You have strength like no other, babe." She said, cupping her wife's cheek. I'm so proud of you." She leaned down and softly kissed pink sweaty lips. "I love you so much."
"I couldn't have done it if you weren't giving it right back to me." she chuckled. "And I love you too." Arizona whispered as the baby let out a small whimper. "Awe someone's cranky."
"Just like mama." Callie chuckled as the baby grabbed on to her pinky. "I'm in trouble." She was already wrapped around her little finger.
"What do you think mommy. Does she look like a Charlee?" The blonde asked when the baby blinked opened her eyes a few times.
"I think that's a yes." She grinned. "You're so beautiful Charlee." Callie cooed, sitting down by her wife as they gushed over their tiny daughter. "Oh my gosh." She froze.
"What?"
"We're parents."
"We are." Arizona giggled as they both placed light kisses on their daughters forehead.
"I hate to break up the party but we need to take her to the nursery do some tests." Cristina broke them out of their little daze.
"But I just got her." The Arizona pouted. "Mama will see you soon baby." She kissed her one last time. "I love you." She whispered before handing her over to her wife. Sighing, she relaxed back on the bed contently for what felt like the first time in days. "Go with her Callie."
"Okay." Callie stood from the bed with her daughter safely in her arms. "Babe?"
"Yeah?" Arizona rolled her head over to look at her wife. "Happy Anniversary." She softly smiled, not forgetting what day it was. She couldn't believe their daughter was born three years to the day.
Reaching for the brunettes hand, she pulled her back down. "Happy Anniversary, Calliope." She kissed her on the lips.
"Best anniversary ever." Callie winked at the blonde. "Love?"
"Love!" Arizona yawned while Cristina ushered away the loves of her life.
