Chapter 4
"Chloe!" Beca squealed as she met Chloe in their arranged place for their date. It was a warm day, but not too hot, and there were few clouds in the sky, giving Beca the perfect weather for their date, the details of which she had not divulged to Chloe yet. The two hugged in the middle of the street, then drew back and kissed, gaining a disgusted noise from a passer-by.
"Have you get a problem?" Chloe asked the old woman, who replied indignantly with "It's sinful and ungodly."
"Yeah, well you're so far up God's arse you're oblivious to the changing world around you" Chloe said hotly.
"Woah, Chlo, calm down" Beca whispered quickly as she dragged Chloe away from the old lady who was looking thunder-struck.
"What?" Chloe asked, feeling a small lift from Beca's use of Chlo rather than Chloe, "I was sticking up for us."
"Yeah, I get that," Beca said, softening, "but you can't say she's stuck up God's arse okay?"
"Fiiine" Chloe sighed, softening up, "where are we off to then Becs?" She asked, her interest in the date running high.
"It's a secret," Beca replied, smiling at her nickname of Becs, "but it's not your conventional date, much better."
"Okay, lead on Macduff" Chloe said, smiling contentedly at the situation she was in.
The pair jumped in Beca's car and were soon off down the motorway, heading north and out of London. Chloe kept asking Beca questions about the date, hoping to catch her off her guard, but Beca was never off her guard, she always had her eyes open, checking every corner of any room she walked in. She had done since a suicide bomber had infiltrated the camp she was in once. Since then she'd vowed not to let her guard down, hence why Chloe couldn't get any details out of her.
They were in the car for at least three hours when Beca pulled off the M6 and onto an A road, heading past a sign that said "Kendal". It was a glorious day across the whole of Britain, and seemed hotter here in the Lake District than it did in London.
"The Lake District?" Chloe asked, realising the dedication Beca had put into this date, "Wow Becs, I'm really not that worth it haha"
"Hey, stop right there Beale, you are worth me driving anywhere to go on a date with you okay?" Beca quickly replied and turned onto a smaller road.
After a further 20 minutes of driving, the pair ended up on the outskirts of a small village and Beca pulled into a layby right next to a field. She put on her sunglasses, got out the car, went to the boot and pulled out a large picnic bag which she slung over her shoulder and a rug. Chloe got out the car as Beca shut the boot and gave her girlfriend a quizzical look.
"A picnic?" She asked.
"Yeah," Beca replied, "it's romantic but not typically boring. Plus it's nice weather and the Lake District and a deserted field"
"I know," Chloe said, "no one's ever put this much effort into a date with me. Plus it's like you said, it's romantic as fuck."
Beca strode over from the boot, placed her free hand on Chloe's hip and kissed her deeply.
"Chloe Beale, you are the best girlfriend ever" Beca whispered as she pulled away.
"Girlfriend huh?" Chloe asked smiling, "Don't remember you asking if I wanted to be."
"Sorry," Beca said, laughing a little, "Chloe, will you be my girlfriend?" She asked, and Chloe nodded, smiling as she did so, and Beca kissed her again, glad she could now have a serious relationship with such an amazing person. "Come on then" Beca said, and strode to a stile in the field wall, clambered over it and strode down the path on the other side, Chloe trailing behind, the two connected by their hands. Chloe could tell Beca had been here before, confirming her theory of vigorous research for their first date. Beca then lead Chloe off the path and into a small ditch in the field, which was surprisingly dry. Beca set down the rug and unfolded it, taking her shoes off and placing them at the corners of the rug so it wouldn't blow away. Chloe did the same with her shoes, and then sat down on the rug as Beca opened up the picnic bag and pulled out some sandwiches, and gave one to Chloe. Chloe took a bite and then looked at Beca in astonishment.
"How on earth did you remember my favourite sandwich filling?" She asked, "I told you three weeks ago!"
"I remember everything about you Chlo" Beca replied, and Chloe's heart lifted and felt a strange warmth flood her body, she was very grateful Beca had chosen to date her.
The two ate their picnic and drank the bottles of water Beca had brought, and then laid back on the rug and stared up at the sky, their hands entwined, feeling decidedly content at their situation together. Chloe rolled on top of Beca so their noses were close to touching, "thank you for the best date ever" she whispered to the smaller woman beneath her.
"You're welcome, thank you for being here with me" Beca whispered back and brought her hand up to Chloe's cheek and kissed her. Chloe kissed back enthusiastically and soon they were locked together in a battle of tongues and lips. It was only when they heard the rumble of thunder above them did they pull apart.
"We'd better get back to the car" Beca said and put her shoes back on and folded the rug up. Chloe picked up the picnic bag and the two ran back to the car as the first few drops of rain began to hit them.
The two jumped into the car and threw the bag and rug into the back seats. Beca started the engine and they were soon on the M6 back to the M1 and then London.
Four hours later the two pulled up outside Chloe's apartment. Beca leaned over and gave her a kiss.
"Want to come in for a coffee?" Chloe asked, and Beca nodded happily.
"Yeah sure."
The two got out the car and walked toward the apartment building, kissing again at the door. The pair looked at each other and crashed together, kissing easily up the stairs and into the apartment, falling into bed.
"Man down! Man down!" Beca was in the heat of battle and sprinted to the sounds of screams and pleas for help. She reached the man who needed her attention. He'd lost both legs and was bleeding profusely, he wasn't going to make it. Beca tried all she could and got so desperate she resorted to begging the man to hold on, but he couldn't, and soon bled out. He'd gone.
Beca woke with a drawn out scream, which then turned into a yell of "NOOOOOOO" as she emerged from the nightmare. Chloe woke with a start and sat upright, before bolting out of bed and running to the other side to catch Beca, who had tried to get up out of bed, but had fainted in her attempt.
"Beca, Beca, it's okay, it was only a dream" Chloe soothed Beca as she regained consciousness, "I'm right here Becs, I'm right here. Tell me what it was about?"
"I..." Beca choked out, tears were streaming down her face and her breathing was erratic, "it, it was about, it was about one of the skirmishes I'd been in. A guy, lost both his legs, didn't make it, and then I saw it again in my, in my dream."
"How many of these have you had?" Chloe asked gently.
"One back in Afghanistan and three whilst we've been in Britain" she whispered almost ashamedly.
"Hey, it's okay Beca. I'm gonna talk to your C.O. when we get back, tell them you're not fit for constant duty" Chloe said.
"No," Beca said suddenly, "you can't, I need to help, I save lives too, I can't not do my job Chloe, this is nothing, it'll pass" she finished unconvincingly.
"But Beca-"
"No Chloe, please"
Now Chloe was the one crying, but she couldn't blame Beca, Chloe had done the same, she'd not seeked help. The pair kissed, and then got back into bed, Chloe wrapping her arms around Beca, holding her close.
"I know it might be too soon," Chloe whispered as sleep threatened to take over, "but I love you Beca, I can't lose you."
Beca rolled over, looked into Chloe's eyes, kissed her forehead, and said in an almost inaudible voice, "I love you too Chloe."
The pair held each other, and that's how Chloe fell asleep, in Beca's arms, but Beca didn't fall asleep again that night. She stayed awake, eyes darting around the room, scared to return to her flashbacks and dreams.
