Things had finally gotten back to normal after Olivia's family left, well relatively normal. Both Olivia and Fitz were packing up the apartment and studying for finals. They would be moving in to their new house in less than a week and taking finals the week after. It was a lot but they were handling it well.

They tried to make things easy on themselves only bringing what had to go, both of their clothes, all Olivia's books, some furniture, but the rest would all be new. Which was what led them to sitting in the living room on a blanket on the floor quizzing with Fitz quizzing Olivia about constitutional amendments and Supreme Court justices.

"Uhm oh here's one, what was the first case Thurgood Marshall presided over?" She answered correctly with a smug smile, Fitz had been trying to stump her all-night and continued to fail.

"Okay first case where the seventh amendment was out under question? Ugh hold on..." He said hoping he'd stumped her but distracted by his ringing phone. It was an unfamiliar number, but with everything going on with the house he made sure to answer every call.

"Hello?"

Olivia got up to make some more popcorn and pour some wine as they were almost done studying. She wasn't really paying attention to Fitz's phone call though she could hear him giving brief answers from the kitchen.

"Yes, I am."

"No I wasn't aware of that."

"Uhm no I don't... Can I call you back tomorrow?"

"Okay yes an email would be fine." She could only hear his side of the conversation, which wasn't alarming, but his face and voice told another story. He put his phone down and stared into space until Olivia came to his side. Her first thought was of her family, but the area code hadn't been familiar and they would have called her first.

"Bee, what happened."

"My, uhm my dads mistress, girlfriend I guess uhm she died yesterday."

"Oh I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were close."

"We're not. I haven't spoken to her since I called to find out about the baby and she told me she lost it."

"Oh Kay." Olivia said confused at his strong reaction.

"She lied to me, I shouldn't be surprised. Everyone told me. She's selfish. She's not like Maya. She will never see what she's done is wrong."

"Fitz..." He never spoke about his mother.

"You know when she got arrested I got the best shrinks around, spent thousands of dollars having specialist flown in, not to clear her, the case done, but I needed one person. Just one person to tell me that she was sick. That she couldn't help it. Just one person to tell me that she wasn't just a selfish cruel vindictive person. That my legacy didn't consist of a philandering corrupt politician and a murderer. No one did."

"You are more than that. Don't you dare say that. I know you feel like you don't have a family, but Claudia and Michael and Huck and Cammie they all love you like you're one of us. You are one of us Fitz. You're legacy will be more than that. Our legacy will be more than that."

"It uhm it already is. I have a sister."

"What? Your mom..." He cut her off.

"Kim lied, she never lost the baby. She's seven. Her name is Scarlett Emery Grant. She's my sister."

"She's... That's... How did you find out?" Olivia had a million questions. She wanted to ask all of them and none of them. He would need time to adjust.

"Apparently Kim never married after Dad, I'm the next of kin for Scarlett. Her parents are dead, I guess she was an only child too. Scarlett is all-alone now too. I'm the next of kin. The lawyer didn't know that I didn't know about her. He asked me when I would come get her. As in I have legal custody of a seven year old." His voice was emotionless. He was clearly in shock. When Olivia didn't say anything he finally met her eyes. They reflected the shock he felt. "Livvie what do we do?"

"Where did they live?"

"What?"

"Where is she right now?"

"Liv..."

"Fitz you're telling me that you're sister is alone after her mother just died. Whether you accept custody if her or not she needs you right now. First we go and we make sure she's okay. After that we can figure out the rest."

"He said he would email me all the information I need." Olivia got up and grabbed his computer and brought it to him. Her mind going a mile a minute. As he was pulling up his email he looked at her as she paced back and forth in front of him. She wasn't quite making circles yet, but he could see any minute she would be doing laps around him.

"He said she's staying with a friend of Kim's. Do you think the friend will keep her, I can't put her in foster care. We've both heard horror stories..." He trailed off not wanting to think about it.

"Foster care is not an option." She said determined. Olivia had spent summers working for a lawyer that practiced family law. She saw kids get taken away from negligent or abusive parents only to get thrown away in a house with fifteen other kids, and have it worse than before.

"I don't think the lawyer would have told me if Kim's friend wanted to keep her. Her name is Quinn Perkins. She lives in D.C. She's a lawyer too apparently, she's the same age as me."

"Fitz we have the money and the room and we can take care of her."

"Liv you don't want kids yet, I can't saddle you with this responsibility."

"After all you've gone through with my family, you think there's anything I wouldn't do for you? Oh god, my father can me be know about her. My schedule next semester is light, she will have winter break with us home and adjusting to a new place. She's in school so she will be taken care of from 8-3. All we have to do is make sure we are around for the rest of it. Fitz I want children with you, I know I said in a long time, but I'm not going to turn away a child, your family, your only family because we don't like the timing."

"You need to think about this Liv. It's a life long commitment. Or at least for the next eleven years. What if she's a brat? What if she's a wreck from losing her mom, she will need more than someone to pick her up and feed her."

"I know that Fitz and I have thought about this." Olivia snapped at him.

"Liv... Okay than give me time to think because I need to wrap my head around it."

"I'm sorry. I can't imagine what you're thinking right now. Let me get is a flight into D.C. and I'll call Quinn and we can make plans for you to meet her."

He nodded as he stared at his computer screen. Olivia had her phone in her hand quickly making flight plans and booking hotels, while grabbing gym bags and stuffing them with whatever clothes weren't already packed. Fitz knew he should help or do something, but he couldn't look away from the picture on his computer.

Scarlett was beautiful little girl, she had a dark complexion, her mother was African American and French, but she had big blue-gray eyes. His eyes. She had their fathers smile, though she was missing a tooth. Her curls had some blond and red mixed in with the deep brown curls. He knew that this little girl had his heart no matter what happened when they got to D.C. he would protect her with everything he had.

Olivia walked back in the room and saw he hadn't moved. She sat down next to him and pulled his head down so she could press his face to her chest. She caught a glimpse of Scarlett as she was stroking his curls.

"She's beautiful Fitz, she looks just like you."

"She looks like my Dad." Fitz told her sadly.

"I know you want to think about this, but I know you. You won't be able to let her go so I'm telling you now so there's no doubt later . I'm in this. I know where her room will be and how I'll help her with homework and teach her to cook, we can plan our classes around her. We can make this work." Fitz smiled. He wanted children with Olivia even if she wasn't their child, he loved her and she would make a great mother. He wanted to take care of the little girl. There was no way he would let her go away.

"People will think she's ours." Fitz told her. She smiled silently and gave him a quick nod that said she was okay with that.

"Claudia is going to spoil her rotten. You know that right?" Olivia warned him. In a few hours they would get on a plane to D.C. and pick up a stranger. They knew it wouldn't be as easy as they were making it sound. They would be taking on a great deal.

"It's a whole new world." Fitz told her astonished at how things had changed in an instant. "It's a whole new world." She agreed her voice filled with wonder.
