CHAPTER FOUR
Previously
After everyone has a chance to get a soda, Catherine is the last to come back into the front room and sits down next to Warrick and Brass who is also sitting on the couch. She looks at Sara and Grissom, who is in deep conversation and she decides to interrupt them. "What is going on Gill, why are we all here?" Catherine says interrupting Sara and Grissom who looks at Sara and asks again in low tones if she wants him to do this, to tell the team what is going on. "No, I have to do this." Sara tells him taking a moment and then she opens her mouth to tell the team what is going on and why they are there.
"Thank you all for coming. Grissom asked you here because what I have to say I did not want anyone to overhear. I just wanted you to know what is going on. I know you are confused as to why you were asked to come here and there is a good reason you were." Sara takes a breath and looks around at the people she considers family. Grissom, Nick, Catherine, Warrick, Greg and Brass. This is her family now. Sara knew they were going to be shocked.
"What is going on, Sara?" A confused Catherine asks Sara. "I thought Grissom had wanted to meet with us." Now it turns out it was Sara and Catherine and everyone is confused.
"What I have to tell you is hard for me and I would appreciate it if you would understand that this is hard and please understand that this story is going to take some time to tell."
"Okay Sara. What do you have to tell us?" Jim Brass asks her curious about what is going on, his instincts tell him it's not good.
"It's about my past. I know you are curious about it and why rape and domestic abuse cases get to me the worst." Sara takes a breath. "The reason is I was a battered wife, so I want justice for women who have gone through what I myself lived through. I want justice for them and for me."
"Who is he?" Nick asks angrily, shocked from his spot in his recliner, wanting to hurt the person who had hurt Sara.
You could also see the anger on the faces of Warrick and Greg. Catherine was shocked.
"Nick, calm down." Grissom tells him. "Let Sara say what she has to say." He tells a shocked Nick and the rest of the team don't know what to say. None of them ever thought that Sara of all people would let anyone abuse her. She was one of the strongest woman that they had ever met and to think that she had been abused, no wonder those type of cases got to her. Warrick thought she would cut off their manhood if anyone thought to hit her.
"I got married when I was 18. I thought I knew him. How wrong I was. I didn't know what he was capable of at all, but I learned. He was one of my older brother's best friends. My family trusted him. They never knew what he was really like. They still don't as far as I know. I wanted to leave after he hit me for the first time but he threatened to rape my 14 year old sister and I was scared after what he did to me on my so called honeymoon. He is a sick bastard. He tied me up and raped me and beat me and continued all night long by morning he had to call a doctor because of what he did to me that night. He paid off the doctor, after what he did to me that night and throughout our 'honeymoon' I was afraid for my sister so I stayed. I was only 18 what did I know? Absolutely nothing. I didn't know how bad it would get. I had thought it couldn't get worse than what my honeymoon was like but I was wrong." Sara explains lost in thought and memories, of the horrible life she led with Bryon Thomas.
"How bad did it get, Sara?" Catherine asks Sara her heart going out to her.
Sara looks at Catherine the only woman in the group besides herself, who could really understand what it was like because she had an abusive husband herself. "Bryon had chains in the basement he would hook me too and beat me and then rape me. Violence turned him on, he hurt me sexually as well as physically and mentally. He had a special box made that had no light in it in the basement that he would lock me in it for hours or for a day at a time if he felt like it. Bryon was not an alcoholic who only hurt you when he was drunk, no that was not Bryon, he hurt you all the time, he didn't need alcohol to be abusive, he didn't need an excuse he just was. He was abusive because the towels were not in a row, or there wasn't fresh flowers on the table. Dinner wasn't ready when he got home or the hangers in the closet were too close together, or I wore the wrong dress. I put on the wrong music for dinner. Just about anything would set him off. I was clumsy he told my family every time I had to go to the emergency room, every time he broke a bone he would have a story ready about how clumsy I was and they bought it. He kept me away from them as much as possible. He isolated me so no one would know what he was doing to me. No one had a clue what hell I was living through." Sara tells a shocked group, they could not believe that Sara went through and they wondered if this was just the tip of the iceberg.
"What happened to make you leave him?" Warrick asks wanting to kill the man who had done this to Sara and so did everyone else in the room want to kill him. Grissom wanted to destroy Bryon especially since he saw firsthand what Bryon had done to Sara. He was the only one to figure it out.
"After a year and a half I decided I could not take any more and I checked myself into a motel and was going to file for divorce I told him, that night my 16 year old sister was raped. Bryon came to me and told me that he raped her and left her in an alley. He had worn a mask so she couldn't recognize him and a condom so there was no fluids, it went down as a cold case, unsolvable. I had another sister and she was 12 and he said that he would rape her if I didn't go back home and be a proper wife submissive to her husband so I went back and I stayed for three more years and then during this time a childhood friend of my father's figured out what was going on. His name was Gilbert Grissom."
