Chapter 4 - Backspace
Jasper Pov
Peter was in the front seat, speeding along the highways, singing along to some song that was blaring from the Pussy Wagon's stereo system. Bella was asleep on the back seat with some influence from my power. I hated to do this without her permission but her body needed to heal from the beating she had taken.
The burns on my legs were beginning to annoy me, the flesh was charred but from experience I knew it could heal; it would take a lot of venom and human blood, which I knew was going to be a problem.
I dreaded going back to the Cullen's house with my mate because I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with the demon couple.
"Let Bella decide." Peter said, his knower intruding my thoughts.
Suppressing a growl I nodded my acknowledgment. My phone vibrated in my shirt pocket, I was surprised that it still worked after being submerged in the ocean.
I slid my thumb across the surface and answered the call.
"Major?"
It was Esme; even though I wasn't near her I could feel her worry through the speaker.
"We found her."
She let out a sob of relief, "How is she?"
"Bella drowned but she's alive. She's asleep."
"Your mate is a strong girl Jasper..."
The sound of skidding distracted me from Esme. I turned towards the annoyance and saw a truck on a collision course with us. It struck the side of the Pussy Wagon with such a force it made us roll. We rotated three times before coming to a halt as we hit something solid.
"Bella?" I asked as I began freeing myself from the metal frame.
There was blood and broken glass everywhere. The drunkard had hit her side of the car, crumpling it around her. I tore through my seatbelt and slipped out of the open window, aware that there was frantic screaming down the phone.
"Bella?!"
I tore at the car, not caring about the humans around us, throwing chunks of the chassis behind me. I growled as the scent of fresh blood got stronger. Peter joined me as we scrambled to get my mate out of the car we were going to have to set fire to.
Within moments we could see her, blood dripping from a deep cut on her forehead. Her new shirt and jeans were soaked with the crimson liquid. Carefully I pulled my Bella out of the wreck and laid her on the cold hard floor. I took her pulse and for the third time today the pain flared. I knew I was growling but I couldn't bring myself to care if the people heard.
"God damn it Jasper, bite her!" Peter yelled.
I shot a dose of lethargy to the surrounding humans and watched as they dropped all at once.
"I am so sorry darlin'." I brushed my lips across her neck before sinking my teeth into the delicate skin.
Her blood was divine, if I could have sustained the source without killing her I would have but I was still in control of my thirst; she was, is, my mate. I drained her of her life force before I pumped my venom into the wound I had created on my mate. I picked up my Isabella and moved her off of the tarmac, out of sight, leaving my second to deal with the car.
A wave of heat scorched my side as a fireball tore through the sky, signalling the return of my venom brother. I pumped Bella's heart for her, making my venom course through her veins. She was still technically dead and would be until I could get a concentrated shot to her heart. Most of the vampiric world didn't know that you could bring back a person once their heart had stopped but no one is quite as good at 'damning the soul' as I am.
"The wolves will be here any second now." Peter stated.
I knew they would be pissed but there is no way in hell I was going to let anyone take her away from me, not after they let her drown. The smell alerted us to their presence. They broke through the tree line, each had rage flowing from their beings, I stopped paying attention as they weren't a threat.
Pete threw a specifically designed hypodermic needle towards me and I plunged it into my thigh, drawing a shot of my venom. I injected it straight into her heart and was pleased to see it jump start into action.
A brown wolf launched himself at me. Peter stepped back, knowing that I would take care of it, to show them not to mess with me. A shot a dose of pain toward the pup and it crumpled in on himself, whimpering a deplorable noise.
"You fucking puppies better back off because I do not wish to kill you. You have a perfectly good relationship with Carlisle and I do not want to tarnish that. But if you cross me, I will destroy you. I am the most dangerous vampire you will ever meet. I am the God of War, if any of you want to test my title then you can. If I kill you it's your own fault because you have been warned." I growled, not turning away from watching my venom spread through my mate's veins.
I felt a strong burst of anger come from a dark pelted mongrel, before he too ran at me, but it was nothing in comparison to what I was feeling. Never before had I given my enemies an out and they mocked me, thinking I was exaggerating. They must have a superiority complex if they believed they could beat me.
The pack surrounded me as I stood with my mate in my arms. Peter understood my intention and reached for her; as much as it tore at my heart, I let him take her. The first wolf attacked head on - a moronic move. I stood still, waiting for the right moment. I could feel the warmth of the dog's breath as it got closer and the rush of air as a paw came towards me.
I leant out of the way and watched as it passed just in front of my eyes. The pup lost balance, expecting to have hit me and crashed to the dirt floor. I winked as I straightened and brushed off the imaginary fluff from my shirt. The dogs exploded with rage, humiliated that their leader had failed so spectacularly. Disgust pulsed from my Captain, disappointed by the lack of skill the wolves possessed; they would not last a second against a newborn vampire, even less if it had any semblance of training.
This time the pack worked together trying to take me down. One wolf stood out of the fold and walked over to my mate; I checked his emotions and found he was no threat. The pup, smaller than the others, nudged Bella's limp hand whining. The love I felt from him was comforting; it was an unconditional brotherly love for my mate. He was feeling alone, being the youngest, and his ties with the pack were weakening.
I could feel the pain in my heart lessening every time I heard her heart beat. The dog and my Captain's excitement sky rocketed and I turned towards them. Isabella's heart was steadily getting faster and faster at a pace unnoticeable by human detection, this meant the change was working. The last wolf had managed to get its teeth into my shoulder as I was distracted but it too was soon on the floor in agony as it healed its broken jaw.
I made my way towards my love but stopped when I saw her eyes open. Her beautiful brown eyes were starting to gain flickers of blood red, it was a mesmerising mix of colours but then they made contact with mine.
I hit the floor.
I was burning again, I could feel the fire running through my veins. I bit my lip, trying to get through the pain but it was too much. My god did I scream. I could hear the wolves getting up, ready to use this against me, but the Major in me pushed the onslaught of emotions out and into the surrounding atmosphere. The area was filled with the screams of human men, as soon as the pain had hit them they had shifted back into their original forms, unable to control themselves as they writhed in agony on the floor. Thankfully I was still sound of mind so I didn't send the agony towards my mate.
I was beginning to be able to ignore the pain; the littlest wolf nudged my shoulder, willing me to get up. I growled and was surprised when he didn't move away from me. No fear came from him, just familiar love. I concentrated on the emotions coming from the pup and drowned myself in them, blocking out the ones Bella had sent me. He nudged me again, as I tried to stand, offering his help. I stood, trembling at the overload of emotions; if I'd still been human, I'd have died from the intensity of them.
The wolf led me towards my mate as I ran my fingers through his thick pelt. For the first time in my lives, human and undead, I was honestly scared; scared that my mate may hate me for confining her to this life without asking.
Peter rolled his eyes at me, easing my worries.
"Captain, close her eyes." I said, still shaking.
The onslaught of emotions cut off as Bella's eyes were forced shut, leaving me disorientated.
I shut my eyes, clearing my head; I could hear the mutants' bones returning to normal.
"I know you can hear me. Do not follow us. If you follow us I will assume you want to die. Do not underestimate me again, I will kill you and I will not feel at all guilty," I waited for them to acknowledge my words, "AM I CLEAR?"
All but one mutt flinched in acknowledgement.
I could feel a pitiful growl growing in his chest.
"You changed her. You've broken the treaty."
"If you lay one hand on my mate, I will tear you all apart." I snarled, lifting up the pup by his throat.
"Your mate, I thought she was Edward's?" The pup spluttered.
I growled as I threw his dead weight across the clearing, "She does not belong to anyone. Edward wanted her blood. He is the cause of this."
Peter cleared his throat from behind me and I turned ignoring the growing anger behind me. My Bella was stood beside my second, a scowl on her face.
"If you attack my mate again, I will kill you Jacob and I'd really rather not. Go tell Charlie that I have some things to sort out and I'll be back."
Her voice cut through the glade, shocking everyone silent. I couldn't understand how she was standing, if she was in fact changing. I tilted my head to the side as I looked at Bella, her heart was still beating at an accelerated pace so she was going through a change, but what kind I was unsure.
She held out her hand and slid it into mine. I breathed a sigh of relief as everything seemed to slip into place.
"Edward and Alice are waiting for your judgement, Bella."
"You didn't kill them?" She asked, tilting her head to the side as she looked at my scars.
"No, I didn't. Peter said I should leave them to you."
The smirk that crossed her face caused a couple of the wolves to back away. There was a glint in her eyes that would have scared me when I was human, now it was a look I knew well. My god was she gorgeous with murder in her eyes.
