Soon Malachi and Liat said their goodbyes. Ziva promised to have them over for dinner once this was over and they were all back in Israel. Both Tony and Ziva watched them go with a hint of sadness. Being contained in NCIS was starting to take a toll on both of them, and they were more than ready to be home.
They spent the next several hours going over possible threats with McGee and Kate. Both of the NCIS agents had to bite their tongues as the list grew and grew. Eventually Gibbs came to them, saying they would be putting them up in a safe house for the night. Ziva started to protest, but Tony stopped her. McGee and Kate grabbed their stuff, and led them out of the building.
-.-.-.-
The next morning the four of them were in the bullpen speaking to Gibbs when a scream resonated through the building.
"Boss that came from Director Vance's office." McGee said as everyone jumped up and took off towards the stairs.
Climbing the staircase Tony muttered to himself. "What a great time to not have a weapon, huh?" Ziva made a sound and he turned to see her passing him a knife that she had pulled from her belt. She smiled as he mouthed 'I love you.'
Entering the office they found the Director's assistant standing behind her desk, her hands over her mouth. In front of her was a box, with the lid having been removed.
"Alice, you ok?" Gibbs asked, moving towards her. She shook her head and pointed at the box. Peeking into the box Gibbs found a human head. He closed his eyes and sighed. He then jerked his head at Tony and Ziva.
Silence filled the room as Ziva peered into the box. Leaning back, only one word graced her lips. "Malachi…"
Alice reached forward, her shaking hand holding a piece of paper. Tony took it and held it in front of them to read.
An eye for an eye.
-.-.-.-
"I want to know how the hell a human head got through base security!" Vance snarled into the phone. "Yes we're on lock down! No one gets on or off this base without speaking to me!" He slammed the phone down. "Any idea who did this?"
Gibbs turned to look at the Mossad officers. "It has to be the cell members of the ring leader they killed. Who else would want them dead?" Tony said.
"Them? We only have remains of Officer Ben-Gidon. Not his partner."
Tony looked at the floor as Ziva spoke. "Odds are Liat is dead as well. There is no point in holding out for hope."
"I see your Mossad training is kicking in Officer DiNozzo. But there is still a chance she could be alive."
Ziva shrugged. "If you say so."
A knock on the door was followed by Agent McGee entering the room. "Director Vance, I think I may have found something."
"What?"
"We were monitoring calls within a fifty mile radius. We got a hit on an outgoing call, but it only lasted a few seconds."
"Where was the call going to?"
McGee looked at Tony and Ziva. "Israel."
Ziva looked at Tony, a hint of hope in her eyes. "Liat."
McGee nodded. "I have the GPS coordinates, Kate and I were just about to head out."
"Take them with you." Vance said and nodded at Tony and Ziva. "And be careful."
-.-.-.-
How much farther Agent McGee?" Tony asked as they walked down the street.
"According to the coordinates we should be coming up on it now." They all looked around.
"There's some alley ways, we should check down there." Kate told them.
Tony nodded. "We'll split up. You and Ziva and me and Agent McGee." They had been searching for a few minutes when Tony heard Ziva yell.
"Tony!"Tony's stomach dropped. He had heard her yell like that before.
"Ziva?"
"Tony I found her!" Tony and McGee took off towards the sound of Ziva's voice. They found her and Kate in a back alleyway, with Kate already on the phone with Gibbs.
Tony stopped short when he saw his wife. She was on the ground, holding Liat's head in her lap. Even from a few feet away he could tell she had taken a beating. As he approached, Ziva brushed some hair off their friends face. His wife was speaking in a jumble of Hebrew and English as she held Liat's hand.
"I am sorry achoti, I am so sorry."
"What did she call her?" McGee asked.
"Sister," Tony replied and turned to look at Kate. "Ambulance on its way?" She nodded.
Once the ambulance arrived and they had loaded Liat into it Tony moved towards Ziva. "Hey, time to go." Ziva nodded silently. "You ok?"
She turned to look at him, her eyes dark. "Someone, will die today." She said quietly and began walking towards the car. While he didn't always agree with Mossad's revenge tactics, this time he did. This time it was personal.
-.-.-.-
No one had told him how hot in actually got in Israel during the summer. If they had, he probably would have thought twice about moving from the States. But here he was, in the middle of the summer, shut away in a hotel room with Ziva, doing surveillance on a potential threat. Ziva was sitting on the windowsill, a pair of binoculars in her lap, while Tony was a in a chair a few feet from her
"Tell me something good, Tony." Her words broke the silence they had been sitting in for several hours.
He chewed his lip in thought. "Did I ever tell you about the time my Mom drank my sea monkeys?"
A laugh fell from her lips. "No."
Tony grinned, remembering his Mother. "Mom liked mint juleps. She somehow got her drink mixed up with them."
Ziva laughed again, this time a snort coming out of her nose. "Your Mother drank your monkeys!?" Tony's heat swelled hearing Ziva laugh.
He nodded his head. "I was upset at the time, but now it makes me smile." He paused. "It's something good to remember about her I guess."
Ziva tilted her head. "You do not realize what things you will remember till those you care about are gone."
"Tell me about Tali." Tony requested, his voice soft.
Ziva's face broke out into a grin. "Tali was…one of the good ones. She did not have a bad bone in her body." Tony smiled as she talked. "She sang opera. Puccini."
"Was she good?"
Ziva let out a sigh. "Oh yes. She was very good. She could even make my Father's eyes fill with tears."
"What do you think she would have done if she was still here?"
"Not Mossad," Ziva said quickly, her eyes dulling. "I would not have let her. She would have done great things." She turned to gaze out the window.
He took a breathe. His next question was probably not going to go over well. "What about your brother?" He saw her shoulders stiffen and when she turned back to him, her eyes were dark.
He stayed silent as her thoughts rolled around in her head. "He was a good brother. He was gentle with Tali, taught me how to be strong. He distracted us when my parents fought." She paused, remembering her half sibling. "But as a son, he was…troubled. My Father groomed him from the beginning to be a mole, to gain inside terrorist information. When his Mother was killed I could see a difference. If my Father did, he chose to ignore it."
"They say he went after Eli." Tony said softly. Malachi had told him this fact one night over drinks.
Ziva's chin dipped to her chest. "Ari had been undercover in a homas terrorist cell. He called my Father, saying he needed to meet. We thought he had new information about a planned attack. But when we got there I knew something was wrong. I could feel it in my…" Her hand drifted down to touch her stomach. "He came out from a corner with his gun raised, saying that my Father was to blame for his Mother's death. The next thing I knew he was on the ground." Tony watched as a tear fell down her cheek.
"Zi…"
She turned her body towards him. "Protect the agency at all costs, yes?" Her voice trembled as another tear rolled down her cheek.
"You saved your Father." She nodded as Tony reached forward and grabbed her hand, interlocking their fingers. "Hey, I'm sorry if I upset you."
Ziva cupped his cheek. "Do not be sorry mon cheri. I appreciate you asking about them."
