AN: I don't own Twilight and Kuroshitsuji, also some of the quotes that are used in this fanfic are from the anime/manga. They are far to awesome to not include.
I would like to thank XxJasper'sAngelxX for going over my chapters :D
Looking for a second Beta for my other story Immortal Watcher. PM me if you are interested :)
The National - Hard to find
Night had finally descended on the Phantomhive estate. The visitors were gone and the manor was once again at peace, well as peaceful as you can get with a house filled with three demons and a human. A dark veil settled over the sky spluttered with bright stars and the cold, late winters breeze blowing into the open window did not do any good in calming the frustrated young demon.
Ciel slammed another aged book onto his desk. His once clean and organized table was now covered with parchments, scrolls and age old books that could be dated to more than a hundred years ago. Ever since it hit him how important Bella was to him, he had started his wild scale research for a way to break the contract or anyway to save her. He looked through myths and legends on demons of different cultures from the old to the new, but his search was futile.
It has been days since his mate had ordered him to stay away. There wasn't a moment that passed by that he didn't long for her touch, to hear her voice or to just be in her mere presence. Research was somehow taking his mind off his mate even if just barely. There were moments when he couldn't take it that and he resumed his place in the hall just outside her bedroom at night or somewhere where he couldn't be seen during the day. She didn't say anything about watching from a far without her noticing, a loophole he had found.
Running his hand through his dark navy locks he called for his demon friend, "Sebastian!"
In no time the demon friend materialized from the shadows, "Yes master?"
"How is your search going?"
Not long after he found out there was huge area to cover for his research he asked Sebastian to help. Ciel took over the human research while Sebastian looked at the demon side of the search, which resulted in him visiting the great library in the demon realm frequently.
The demon realm. Over the years since he had became a demon he had visited that realm once or twice just out of curiosity. What greeted him was a city like no other, the sky was dark as night, no stars in sight and there was no sun at any time of day, only two, one small and one larger, moon-like mass decorating the sky giving it an eerie glow over the city below. The city was large, much larger than New York and was divided into different sectors. Now you must be wondering surely with the size of the city there must be a huge amount of demons living there, but the city itself housed many types of demons and monsters that were able to cross from one realm to another like werewolves, succubi, dark fairies, goblins and so on, and in the middle of it all was a large castle that towers the whole city where the ruler of the demons and monsters reside.
"Not good my lord, I had read back to back on Faustian contracts and there is no way to cancel it without using the same method as yours."
Ciel looked at the flickering flames from the fireplace.
"But there has to be something..."
"I have looked through the archives of contracts, but found no record of any demon finding a mate in a human or a mate on a contractor again. Demons who had found their mates were either the same demon as us or of a different species, a supernatural like us none the less," He walked over to Ciel and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"I must be the stupidest demon alive right now...I should have recognized the connection... " He stood abruptly and threw his whole desk across the room shattering it into small pieces, scattering parchments and books everywhere, "God damn it!"
He paced the room.
"What's done is done, we can't turn back time, but we will continue looking."
"Is there any way to break the contract?"
"Unfortunately no," Sebastian shook his head, "Once the contract has been made, there is no turning back. Even if you find yourself unable to kill your contractor the Faustian mark that is placed on her will take her life away, slowly until her last breath. You can't revive her, she will be just a non moving container with a soul ready for the taking."
"I...I can't lose her," Ciel choked back a sob, looking at his butler with pleading eyes, dread, sadness, anger and frustration swirling in his now ruby red eyes.
Sebastian looked at his master breaking down again. It stung his demonic heart seeing his young master and unappointed younger brother in pain. He just hoped that what his intuition was telling him was right. That everything will work out in the end and not leave his young master a broken hearted, emotionless demon.
"There must be a way..."
How is he suppose to continue living without her? Before meeting her there has been that missing part of him that he longed to find, but now that he had found her he had done something unforgivable. How could he have been so stupid to not see what was in front of him?!
Is this what he gets for avenging his parents? Killing those who were responsible? Making a contract with a demon? Turning into a demon himself, thus preventing Sebastian to consume his soul and forever roam the earth for eternity serving him? He was meant to die. Did fate come up with this? In exchange for his life another life must be taken?
His mate's life.
His Isabella.
"How about making Bella's body able to house the soul again?"
The butler solemnly shook his head, "It wouldn't work. The contract we demons make are solid. There are no loopholes what-so-ever. Once the life is lost that's it. There is no turning back, no reviving, not even necromancy can bring her back. Not only the body is affected by not being able to house the soul, but also the soul itself. There would not be any other suitable body aside from the original one. "
"Does the soul need to be consumed right after the body dies."
"No. Like yours it can take years, centuries maybe millennia before it can be consumed providing it will be protected from other demons or anyone who wish to consume it, but because the contract has the fine print of 'consume the soul', you will feel the hunger until you are able to consume it."
That would be fine, even it takes forever it's a small price to pay. I would never consume her soul. Contract be damned, he thought, "Continue with the research Sebastian."
Sebastian bowed with one gloved hand placed across his chest , "Yes my lord."
A soft knock brought both demons' attention towards the door. A fast, thundering heartbeat could be heard from the other side.
"Ciel..." Bella's soft voice came from the other side. Worry, uncertainty and fear evident in her voice.
"I shall take my leave then, my lord."
With a bow the demon butler faded back into the shadows, resuming his task.
"Yes Miss Swan?"
Bella winced, his voice was cold as ice. She had been practising her violin when a loud bang disturbed her playing, so after putting back her violin she padded the halls in search of the origin of the sound. Aside from Ciel's room every room she came to pass was dark and shut.
"Can I come in?" She asked meekly.
Looking over to where his butler had disappeared he sighed and told Bella to come in. Bella stared wide eyed at the chaos in front of her, there was a huge dent in one of walls, bits of wood in different sizes underneath it with papers scattered everywhere.
He sighed. "What can I do for you Miss Swan?"
"Is everything OK?" She timidly asked.
"I-I don't know," He didn't look her in the eye as it was true, he didn't know where he currently stood.
"Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Well, for starters you can stop avoiding me," His voice dripped with sarcasm. He internally winced when he saw hurt flash in her eye, It wasn't his intention to hurt her, but there were so many things on his mind; missing the touch of his mate, hearing her, saving her, well everything really that has been happening which all started from the moment he figured out his feelings. Problems after problems piling one after the other.
"I….I….." She stammered looking everywhere but his eyes.
"I- what Isabella? Pray to tell me why do you avoid me?"
A few minutes had passed and there was still no answer.
"Fine. If there is no answer then I kindly ask for you to leave," He spat.
"You want the answer. Then an answer you will get...! I am afraid OK!" She yelled.
Confusion passed his features. "Afraid of what?"
"This…." She said pointing between them, "This...us….I am afraid of feelings developing further than of demon and contractor. I thought that it was just sign the contract, do the terms and finally go in peace once it's done, but no….I just had to develop feelings for you! I thought it was just a passing crush like in elementary school, but the more I spend time with you….and that kiss! It….It only made it worse!"
"You think you had made it worse because you have feelings for me?" He let out a humorous laugh. " Sorry to inform you, but you developing feelings for me is far from making it worse, truth be told I am glad you do, but if want to hear something terrible try finding out the human you had made a contract with is your mate. It too late when I realise what she really meant … it is the worst and it is unforgivable. Now tell me Isabella who had done worst, me or you?" He looked at her with tears in his eyes.
Determination flashings in his baby blue eyes he closed the distance between them and captured her lips in a bruising kiss, pouring all the frustration, anger, relief, love and hope into the kiss.
"Contract….mate?"
"You, Isabella are my mate and I was too stupid to realize it. I didn't know how much you mattered to me until I felt the fear of losing you. I know what I had done is unforgivable and I had spent many nights wishing to go back in time and tell my self what is right in front of me ,"He removed her eye patch, cupped her cheeks and looked into her eyes, " I hadn't experienced love of a soul mate before finding you. It was a foreign feeling that I brushed it off, but as the days go by it only grows to something I can't explain and when you got hurt by Victoria, it was when it hit me. That you are my mate and I can't imagine an eternity without you in it. So please Isabella….please give me a chance to make things right…"
Bella stood there trying to make sense of what he had just revealed to her. She didn't know whether to be glad that she indeed have a soul mate when she thought Edward was hers or terrified of the idea of finally finding love only for her to take it away in the end. It wasn't supposed to happen like this.
She closed her eyes fighting tears from falling, took both of Ciel's hands away from her face and stepped away.
"I can't Ciel….." Her arms closed around her as silent tears started to fall. She then spoke brokenly, "I had lost everyone who came close to me Ciel. Lets face it, no matter what angle we look at this thing between us, it won't have a happy ending. As you said before, the contract has been made."
It broke both of their hearts because it was true.
Bella stiffened when strong arms encircled her from behind.
"Even when the contract is over, I won't eat your soul. I will find a way to bring you back even it takes eternity…...I too lost many people in my life and I can't afford to lose another one…..I can't lose you. I don't know if there would be a life without you."
Was it worth it to give love one more chance? Give Ciel a chance to set things right? She knew that their happily ever after was far from true. Bella looked out at the night sky. She always put everyone's needs above her own, will it be so bad for her to be selfish just this once?
She wants to live, find love again.
Bella took a deep breath and face Ciel. She lift her hand and trace underneath his uncovered eye. Chocolate eyes meet glacier blue.
"OK …..I will give us a chance. I am not doing it for you or anyone else and for once I am doing it for myself. I want to feel what true love feels like and to live my life fully."
Then she kissed him. Though it started out as a sweet kiss, it then became more heated and filled with passion. Her hands tangled with his dark navy locks while his enclosed around her waist pulling her petite form flushed into his. Ciel lightly nipped her bottom lip and when she parted he growled at the sweet taste that is Bella.
Minutes had passed until both bodies reminded them they need air. Ciel marvelled at the image of his mate's flushed cheeks, swollen cherry red lips parted and dazed eyes.
"I guess both of us are such idiots for not seeing what is right in front of us," Bella said grinning.
Ciel chuckled, wiping tears from her eyes with his thumb, "Huh. Well what do you know…I guess we are.. " He smiled and gave her a chaste kiss.
It doesn't matter how long. He would find a way. Even if he had to go through hell then so be it.
