The Pup and the Prince
...
|half a year later|
"Ew! Get it away from me!"
"Calm down Teruko, it's just a puppy."
"Yeah, and it's SLOBBERY!"
"First of all, that was rude. Secondly, my dog does not slobber, she gives kisses."
"Are you sure it's even tame! ACK! JESUS CHRIST, it's TEETH!"
"Nice, right? We just got them cleaned."
"Why does it look like a wild... I don't know, hyena? Normal dogs don't have stripes!"
"Hyenas don't have stripes, they have spots." Seiji helpfully supplied.
"Idiot." Aika insulted, crouching down to let Mai off her back. Immediately, the little girl ran away with a squeal, "Come here Ra-Ra! Play with me instead!" She had spotted a small area of mud earlier that could not go ignored.
Akari gave the gorgeous red brindle Akita pup a very fond look as it trotted excitedly through the grass, sniffing all the different people. If the dog were to resemble any wild animal, it would be a tiger... Which is exactly why they had given her the name Teigra. Though Mai had taken to calling her 'Ra-Ra', insisting that that was the sound a real tiger made. "Teruko, that's just the way they look. Their coats are uniquely streaked with color."
"Well that's nice and all, but I still think it was probably born in the wild." Teru straightened out her clothes and breathed a sigh of relief now that the puppy wasn't circling her anymore, and had instead ran off to follow Mai. "Please keep it away from me."
Akari rolled her eyes, annoyed. "Right. Will do, little miss drama queen."
"She doesn't like dogs." Seiji defended, lifting an arm around his girlfriend to comfort her.
"I don't particularly love dogs either," Aika announced. "but that puppy is damn cute." She tossed the other woman a look of disapproving annoyance, and in return Teruko stuck her tongue out at her.
"Whatever! Let's just go inside already!"
"Yeah, who knows what other wild creatures we may encounter out here in the Igarashi's front yard." Seiji laughed, causing Aika to laugh with him and Teru to smack his arm.
"Oh no, look there! A feral tiger approaches!" Aika suddenly grabbed Teru and hid behind Seiji's back, and Akari turned around in confusion only to find her husband making his way toward them. Oh.
Teigra ran to him with a certain eagerness that she never ran toward Akari with, yipping and circling his long legs to get his attention. He paused for a moment, looking down to regard the bundle of fluff with a tilt of his head, and then he stooped to pick her up. The puppy seemed to go still to allow him to situate all 16 pounds of her comfortably in one arm, her nose nuzzling his chest as he used his free hand to give her a nice scratch behind the ears.
"Uhh," Aika seemed at a loss for words as Tora began to walk towards them again with the pup pawing at him adorably. The fact that he was allowing it to touch him, no, just the overall look of Tora with a puppy was hard to come to grips with. "I take back the part about him being feral, I guess."
When the blond man reached them, he gave them all a very bored look before demanding, "Why are you here."
"Never mind, he's the same as ever." Aika muttered bitterly, and the pup yapped as if it were re-asking Tora's question, her tail wagging uncontrollably while he continued to trail his fingers behind her furry ears.
"Seiji suggested that we all get together for a visit. We're having dinner in a little while if you want to join us." Akari explained, unable to hide her grin at the way he was handling the dog. Every time she saw Tora with that puppy, it was cuter than the last time she saw him with it. The cuteness level just kept going up!
The funny part was, he thought he wouldn't like having it around. He only bought the animal for his wife's sake, hoping to raise it as their guard dog so that some good use could come out of it, but the fuzzy bundle of fur was so much more than 'just a guard dog' now.
He would deny it if you asked him, but Teigra was his favorite, and he was hers. It was just about the cutest thing ever.
Tora immediately soured Akari's happy thoughts with yet another offensive question. "Why would I spend my day off with these people?"
Eyes like ice now that he had insulted her friends, his wife leaned in with a growl. "You don't have to, but I'm certainly going to, and I just thought I would invite you because that's the polite thing to do."
He met her icy glare with a hellish look of his own. "What if I don't want them coming into my home?" Again, the dog let out a quick bark to back him up.
"Seeing as it's my home as well, they have every right to be here if I want them to be."
"Akari," He lowered his voice and fixed her with a serious look. "They are all unstable in one way or another. Maybe if you befriended people with even a fraction of normality to their character, I would be more comfortable with their company."
The ice suddenly left her glare, which surprised him. But then he realized that it must have gone to linger on her breath, because when her cold lips met his ear and spoke, he shivered unpleasantly at the chilling words. "If you do not stop being such an ass, you will not be getting any more of mine for a long, long time."
Her friends leaned in all at once to try to catch what she was saying, wondering at how it had made Tora suddenly go silent and still. He even had this look in his eyes that spoke of a slight panic, but it was only slight.
The puppy began to struggle, trying to lick his cheek, unable to reach until he propped her up higher with his arm. "...Akio is sleeping, so they can't be loud. We should probably keep them away from him altogether."
"Oh, I wanna see the baby! It's been forever since I've seen him!" Teru cried out excitedly.
"Yeah, I wanna see my nephew." Aika agreed, and Seiji chimed in with a "Same here!"
"He is sleeping." Tora repeated as he shot them a sharp look, speaking slow and steady since they were obviously too dumb to understand him clearly otherwise. "I refuse to let his rest be disturbed by the likes of-"
A sudden tugging on his pant leg distracted him, and he lowered his gaze to meet Mai's pleading look. She had popped out of nowhere, and her hands were all muddy for some reason, leaving dark stains on his slacks. "Can I please see the baby?" She was doing this thing with her bottom lip that made it stick out ridiculously, wide doe eyes gazing deeply into his soul.
He stared at her for a long while, debating several things at once in his head, one of them being how he was going to get the stains out of the expensive material of his pants.
The pup licked his face again, and there was another insistent tug on his pant leg.
"Al...right." He struggled to get the word out, clearly not used to having everyone gang up on him like this. If this were a different situation, (one without cute kids and puppies and his wife's terrible threats) he would have kicked all their asses out of here by now and gone back inside to enjoy some peace and quiet until the baby woke up.
"Yay!" Mai cheered, and reached up expectantly for the dog. "Can I please hold the puppy too?" Again, she widened those big brown eyes and stuck out her lip in the ultimate begging puppy-dog face. It could very easily rival Ra-Ra's.
But, Tora was drawing the line there. "No." He deadpanned, shifting so that the pup was resting in his opposite arm, further from the child's reaching, muddied hands.
"What he means is," Akari quickly interjected, holding out an arm to stop Aika from throwing a punch for the way Tora had just treated her daughter. "You can see the puppy after you get cleaned up. Same goes with the baby."
"Oh, that makes sense!" The little girl nodded vigorously, releasing Tora's pant leg finally and skipping off toward the manor. "Let's all hurry and go get clean then!"
Aika went after her daughter, scooping her up with a huff. "It's just you who needs to get clean, you messy little turd."
"Isn't it rude to call your child a turd?" Seiji started to walk after them, leading Teruko with his hand in hers.
Their voices began to fade with the closer they got to the front doors, and when they were out of earshot Tora turned to his wife with his eyes narrowed down to angered slits. "The next time they're coming over, give me a fair warning first. And don't think I'm not going to get back at you for this, because I most definitely will." His eyes flashed with dark promises hidden in their golden depths. "You will be begging for mercy by the time I'm done with you."
The dog let loose another, louder yap and pawed the air, as if to appear intimidating.
Rolling her eyes, Akari gave the fluff ball a friendly scratch behind the ears and then moved past with a cool, mocking remark on her lips, "Says the man with a soft spot for puppies."
Tora blinked after her, and opened his mouth to object. Then he gazed down at the dog questionably. It looked right back up at him, meeting his gaze with large, shining eyes, and bumping its nose playfully against his cheek, tail thumping back and forth at a happy pace.
He drawled at it with an impassive look, "What are you doing?" and it reached up and licked just under his chin. "That's not cute." This time the slimy tongue moved over his lips. "And that's disgusting." Another lick touched the tip of his nose. "Stop this."
In the end, he resorted to shoving the pup's face away, ignoring the way his fingers were being licked while he tried to recover from the ridiculous display of cuteness, which he definitely did not have a soft spot for.
"Mai Funakoshi."
Everyone at the table turned their attention to Tora, who was shooting Aika's kid a dark, serious look that spoke of a deep displeasure.
"This is the third and last time I'm going to tell you not to feed the dog food under the table."
Slowly Mai brought her hand back up above the table, and placed the piece of meat back on her plate. "Sorry Uncle Tora." She fluttered her eyelashes innocently enough, but as soon as he looked away she was sneaking another piece of food off of her plate, unable to ignore the way Ra-Ra was pawing at her chair and whining pitifully.
"So how are things with everyone?" Akari began pleasantly, reaching for a roll from the basket in the middle of the table.
Aika handed the basket over to her and smirked, jumping right into conversation. "I told you my brother's getting married to his girlfriend finally, right? Suichi's such a nerd, waiting eight years until he finally popped the question... But anyway, Ryu couldn't make it here tonight 'cause of that. He wanted to take my bro out to celebrate." Her gaze flickered over to her daughter for a moment, who was waving her hands in big, showy gestures. "Oh yeah, and Mai learned how to ride a bike. Finally. My sister taught her the other day while she was babysitting."
"Really?" Akari turned to the little girl with a bright smile. "Wow, that's awesome Mai-chan!"
"I know!" She smiled back just as brightly. "I'm awesome!"
"Mai-chan: ever the humble individual." Tora muttered into his glass.
"What about you guys?" Akari moved on to the oddly quiet couple sitting across from her. Something was up with them, she could sense it. "Anything interesting happen in your lives lately?"
"Does Mr. Yoshioka still hate that you're dating his daughter, Seiji?" Aika asked bluntly, causing Teru to scowl.
"What do you think?" The fair-haired woman began in a harsh tone. "He's not rich, or very smart, and he has a freaking split personality. My father doesn't just hate that we're going out, he loathes my boyfriend's entire existence. What's more, even though Shigeo dumped me for another woman, my father would rather me be with that prick than with Seiji!"
Seiji copied Tora's earlier move and lifted his own glass to his lips, muttering into it quietly. "Uh, ouch."
"B-but," Teru looked over at him and tried calming herself down a bit. "That being said..." She moved her hand over to trace manicured nails through his hair and watched in delight as he stopped and stared at her, going slack-jawed. "I like my Seiji very much, and in my eyes, he will always be a hundred times better than Shigeo ever was."
With a silly grin finding its way onto his face, Seiji snaked an arm around her waist and yanked her close for a kiss. "Teru-"
Aika ruined the moment by coughing up her drink. Everyone turned to her in alarm, confused when she reached out randomly and grabbed one of Teruko's hands.
"The hell is this?!" She sputtered, holding the hand up in front of everyone's faces for them to see.
"A manicure. You should think about getting one sometime." The light blonde replied with a catty smirk.
"Not your nails you chit, I'm talking about the diamond band on your finger!"
"WHAT?!" Akari practically launched herself across the table to grab at the hand as well. She needed a better look. "Oh my god, that's a ring! A wedding ring!"
"Explain yourself woman!" Aika demanded, the volume of her voice causing the puppy to start barking from underneath the table.
"Well, we wanted to tell you tonight-" Seiji began to explain.
"Kai proposed!" Came the blurted response from his girlfriend, or rather, fiancée.
The other two women were quick to freeze in place.
"Kai did?" Both of them shot Seiji a look, but he sheepishly avoided their gaze.
"Yeah, I was going to meet up with Seiji but when I got to his apartment Kai answered the door. He was guiding me into the bedroom when the box with the ring in it fell out of his jacket pocket. Apparently Seiji had been planning on giving it to me in a really romantic way, but Kai beat him to it!" Teru was gushing.
"How's that?" Akari wondered aloud. A pervy bad boy like Kai didn't really seem like the 'proposal' type.
"Well, at first he got all confused, and turned to me to ask me what it was. When I told him I had no idea, we both opened the box together out of curiosity and just stared at it. Honestly, I was a little worried he'd freak out, but instead he grabbed my hand and put it on. He was grinning like an idiot, and it was soooo cute~ when he asked me, just like this, "'Hey, I don't remember buying this, but I'm glad I did. From now on, I want you stuck with me forever!'" Stars were in her eyes as she played back the proposal in her head. "And of course I said yes to that, I mean who wouldn't, right?"
Promptly, Seiji face-palmed. "So unromantic..." He groaned out, ears bright red and then turning even redder when Teru placed a kiss on one.
"I thought it was kinda perfect!" She giggled happily. "And I can't wait to be Mrs. Teruko Akamine."
Tora surprised everyone by deciding to interject. "What does your father have to say about this?" He was, of course, familiar with the Yoshioka Law Firm and its owner.
"Yeah, did you tell him yet?" Akari questioned further, earning an affirmative nod from Teruko, before Seiji started spurting sarcastic nonsense.
"Obviously he said that he wants me to be the one to change my name, accepting me into the Yoshioka family with open arms and sharing his wealth with me, treating me like the son he never had."
"Don't be bitter." Teru gently chided. "Daddy loves me, and if I've chosen you, then he'll learn to accept that... eventually. Because he only cares about my happiness." She paused. "And also money, but first and foremost, he wants me to be happy."
"Wow. I don't think she's joking." Everyone turned to see Aika looking utterly shocked. "She really is happy with Seiji and Kai. How fucking weird is that?"
From the end of the table, Mai shouted out, "SWEAR JAR!" and walked over to her mother with her empty water glass in hand. "You said the bad word dad doesn't want you saying around me, so you owe me a dollar." She looked at everyone else at the table with a smirk. "I gotta save up for college, ya know?"
Tora fought to cover up a fit of snickering, but he it didn't quite hide it well enough. He'd say he rather deserved the slap Akari delivered to his thigh right then.
"At least it's for a good cause." Aika muttered, and pointed for Mai to sit back down. "Remind me when we get home, hun. I don't have my wallet with me right now."
"Well," Once the child was seated, everyone resumed eating again, save for Akari. "When's the wedding?"
"This upcoming autumn, seeing as that's Teru's favorite season." Seiji said between bites. "We'll have to wait for spring to be over with and summer will seem like it's dragging on and on... But I think the waiting will be worth it." There was a bright light in his green-blue eyes as he glanced over at his wife-to-be. "We want it to be perfect."
"I already picked out the bridesmaid dresses for you two," Teru said excitedly. "and don't worry, they're utterly fantastic-looking!"
"As long as they're any autumn color but orange, I'm sure they are." Aika coughed out.
The blond woman scowled at the brunette for what seemed like the hundredth time that evening. "You insult me! I would never have such a terrible sense of style! Having you walking around like pumpkins at my wedding is the last thing I would want."
"Although it would be charmingly amusing to watch." Seiji added in with a wink.
Before all this talk of wedding plans could escalate further, Tora abruptly stood from the table.
"Akio's awake."
Everyone just looked at him weird.
"How do you know? Isn't he upstairs?"
"Are your 'daddy senses' tingling?"
"Since he's a tiger, he probably has crazy-good hearing or some shit."
"SWEAR JAR!"
"Or," Akari stood as well, pulling out her phone from her pocket. She showed everyone the app that both of them had installed, which buzzed every time any noise came from the baby's room. It was a lot easier than keeping baby monitors around every corner of their massive estate. "We have technology that helps us, like any other normal human being does."
"Do you want to handle this, or should I?" Tora asked, eyebrow arching with the question as he turned to her.
"He might be hungry." Akari placed a hand on his arm and gave him a quick kiss. "I'll go."
"Why don't we all go?" Aika was standing up too, and then Mai was skipping over, followed by the puppy and the newly engaged couple. "When we peeked in on him earlier, he was asleep. That's boring. I wanna play with the little imp."
"Do not," Tora's eyes flashed meaningfully. "Call my son an imp."
She shrugged. "Monkey? Rascal? Which nickname is to your liking, rich boy?"
"Oh my god, do not start this right now." Akari linked arms with her husband and dragged him off with her, and the others followed. "We need to check on our baby."
Some time later had all of them lazying about in the nursery, watching Akari gently pat and rub her son's back, trying to make him burp after all the milk he'd just had. After getting to hold the baby once like she was promised, Mai had fallen asleep on the floor, Ra-Ra curled up next to her like an adorable bundle of snuggles.
"That little guy is C.U.T.E, CUTE!" Teruko kept hovering near the baby, staring at the child as if he were a demigod or something. Her hands flapped about and giggles escaped her every time he managed to burp.
"And he's not up for adoption, so quit fawning over him like he's for sale." Tora ground out, not very pleased with the fact that all these people were giving his kid so much attention.
"Hush, Tora." Akari scolded him half-heartedly, a yawn spreading her lips. "We only have ourselves to blame, for making such a handsome kid."
He grunted out a quick "yeah", eyes landing on his child and giving the boy a fond, fatherly glance. He pushed away from the wall then and walked over. "Here, I'll hold him now."
Tiredly, Akari passed the baby over to him and moved to sit down on a nearby chair. "Nn. I think I need a nap."
"Ah." Aika moved to pat her friend's arm in an understanding manner. "I used to get tired after nursing Mai, too. You want a blanket or something?" When Akari nodded, Aika gave Teruko a meaningful look.
Teruko nudged Seiji. "Get a blanket."
He obliged, moving to the closet to grab one, seeing as Teru was unable to do anything but stand there staring at the child. Being an only child, she probably loved the idea of having a big family some day, just lots of kids to spoil rotten.
"He's absolutely precious!" She gushed for about the millionth time now, and Tora rolled his eyes, far beyond exasperation at this point.
But everyone did agree with her.
Akio was a little prince. His eyes were that sparkling champagne color from Tora's side of the family, and the light brown swirls of hair on his head naturally came from Akari's side. It might get darker as he got older, get a hint of red in it maybe like Akari's hair, or it could end up getting lighter and closer resembling Tora's. Either way, the kid was gonna be beautiful to look at. He had Tora's jawline, that much was for certain, and Akari's paler skin. Sometimes, when he smiled, there was a quirk to his lips that you could easily place as Tora's. He even arched his dark brows in the very same way Tora would.
However, both of his parents had the sneaking suspicion that he was going to grow up with the very same temperament as his mother. He spent more time with her than with Tora after all, seeing as the blond was a very busy man, meanwhile Akari just liked to do her own thing on the sidelines of their family business. Already, they could tell how stubborn the little tyke was, and lately, he liked annoying his dad by any means necessary. He found it oddly hilarious when Tora got a frustrated scowl on his face, for some reason always laughing like mad with this winning grin stretching his cheeks, clapping his little hands like he was oh so proud of himself for upsetting daddy.
In that respect, he was very much like Akari, who liked to endlessly tease her husband and just loved rubbing her wins in his face.
"You know," Tora found his thoughts slipping from his mouth as he stared down at his son, who was kicking his little feet and grabbing at Tora's shirt pocket with those tiny, chubby hands. "our son is probably going to end up being a gambling man."
Akari's eyes snapped open. "Huh?"
"He's got my intellectual acuity, naturally, and your stubbornly competitive streak. We both just love to play games, so he probably inherited that too. And he's been surrounded by the whole energy of the two of us betting on things ever since he was in your womb, so it's probably just who he is, written in his DNA."
There was a pause where Akari carefully considered his words, and her friends were sure she was going to disagree with him or get upset with him - but then she smirked. "I can see him being a con artist. A really good one, too. The kind who seduces a pretty lady and then steals all her money from her."
Tora stared lovingly down at his son, allowing the boy to wrap a hand around one of his fingers. "Yes, exactly. Or maybe he could be the next James Bond."
"Agent Akio-7." Akari laughed, and Tora joined in with her, the sound almost... kind of really evil.
Everyone else in the room stood there awkwardly, feeling out of place and unsure of the situation, staring at the baby boy in a whole new light.
For all they knew, that kid could end up ruling the world someday.
