Worried about this chapter.
Awkward. That was one word you could use to explain this moment.
If I could've, I would have ran.
"Aunt Rita, You're here." I said. That was the only non-inflammatory thing I could think of saying.
She ignored me. She was critically eyeing Spot.
Well, I guess that cats out the bag.
"I have three questions for you and I'm going to give you time to think before you answer them. Think very carefully before you open your mouth."
Oh God.
Aunt Rita took a deep breath and glared at my hand. I let Spot's hand go and Spot got the hint and stood up.
It was a while before she said anything.
"Who is this young man? What have you been lying to me about? And why are we in the hospital?"
By my Aunts behavior, I could tell she wouldn't take anything but the truth and if I were to lie and she found out later of my dishonesty... well lets just say things wouldn't end right.
"This is Finn but they call him Spot. I haven't lied about anything terribly important and I got shot."
There, done. I wondered if the truth would set me free.
I hadn't lied but I wasn't specific.
"You got shot? Where?"
"My leg. We were..." I didn't feel like talking about what we were doing " We were talking in an alley and then this man came and shot at us."
This was going better and less emotional than I thought.
"You were talking in an alley?" She looked skeptical. Dang it.
"Mostly talking" I answered. I'd die if she asked details on the conversation.
"Why did you get shot?"
This was a toughie. It was going to take a while to get this out.
"Sp-Finn would you mind giving my Aunt and I some privacy?"
Spot paced the halls. He had never met the relatives of any of his girls. Probably because his relationships mostly consisted of one-night stands and quickies in public spaces.
How was he supposed to act? Respectful obviously but sometimes that wouldn't cut it. Her Aunt looked more worried then mad. Violet had a lot to spill and Spot, as much as he loved her-
Love. That was a new concept to him. It was like a slap in the face that made him spin and then fall.
He wasn't sure how it happened. It just did. He was talking to Jack when he realized.
"Haven't seen your girl in a while."
Spot could see where this conversation was going.
"Neither have I. She's mad because I got stabbed."
He continued to munch on his sandwich while Jack observed him.
"Think she'll come around?" Jack was really nosy.
"Nah. She's works a lot."
Jack nodded and continued to pry "Where does she work?"
"She's a waitress. I always forget the name of the place. I don't recommend it though, I only go in so I can talk to her when she's on break"
"You really like her don't you?"
Spot glared at Jack and ignored him. Feelings were not something Spot discussed.
"I'm not leaving until you tell me what I want to hear."
Spot sighed "What exactly do you want to know?"
"Well for starters, how did you meet? when? and for how long you've been together?"
"You're starting to sound like a skirt."
Jack shrugged "Maybe but Race's been bugging me all week"
"Fine but if anything I say leaves this room you're screwed"
Jack pretended to lock his lips and throw away the key.
"I met her while running from the cops-
"Typical Spot" Jack muttered.
"No interruptions. Violet was talking out the trash and it was dark and I didn't see her, so I rammed her straight to the ground"
Jack started laughing. "Smooth, Conlon. Smooth."
"Shut up. I felt bad for scaring her so I chased her around until she agreed to go out with me. It was in may"
Spot tried not to smile as he remembered how they met. It would have been nice if they had met like normal people
"That's the most romantic thing I've heard. Have you guys done it yet?"
Spot felt his heartbeat spike. He grabbed the pillow he'd been using and threw it at Jack.
"What? You've asked me same question millions of times!"
"Yeah but this is different! She's different! I'm not touching her 'till-"
Spot stopped talking, he'd said too much.
Jack looked like he had won the lottery. "What did you just say Conlon? Would you like to repeat that?"
"Get out"
"My lodging house, my rules. Spill it all or I'll stop feeding you"
Spot rolled his eyes " I just don't want our relationship to be merely physical."
"Do you love her? I think you love her. You wouldn't have stayed this long without action if you didn't love her"
The question grounded him. It was such a drastic condition. He'd suspected something was changing within him when he turned down an invitation to Medda's so he could go see Violet .
"Maybe. Its none of you're business"
"I'm taking that as a yes"
Spot didn't bother to refute him. He didn't think he could. It would be like standing in front of the mirror and telling himself he wasn't Spot Conlon.
Jack had stayed a while more to pry and dig out all the information he wanted. Spot was left blushing and reeling with thoughts of Violet.
The door opened and the woman from before came bustling out. She looked like a white sheet, her eyes were kept downcast as she walked out with her children.
Spot looked inside to find Violet she was rubbing her face as she sat up on the bed.
He walked inside and shut the door behind him.
Violet was crying, he sat on the bed and pulled her closer.
"Can I ask?"
"Not yet" She answered, wrapping her arms around him.
"You're very lucky, miss." The doctor gave me his hand and helped me to stand "You'll have to change the bandage every other day. You'll be on crutches for at least a month."
The nurse handed me the crutches "You can count on limping around for at least a couple of weeks before going back to normal."
"Yes that too. " The Doctor nodded and opened the door for me.
"Do you have a way to get home?" He asked.
"Ah yes. Finn's going to meet me here at twelve"
"That's in ten minutes. Lets go get the paperwork done so you can get out of here"
They took me to the front desk and made me sign some papers. The bills were being paid by a sponsoring church.
I waited around, surrounded by a bunch of other sick people. Their coughs made me flinch and want to shrink.
Spot was taking forever, he was supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago. I go frustrated enough to think about leaving by myself but that wasn't possible.
My Aunt had come and visited me again, she said that it was too dangerous for me to go stay in New York. She wanted to send me to my grandparents down in the south.
I told her I couldn't do that. When she asked why, I didn't have the guts to tell her why. I loved Spot, I knew I did but I...
"Violet!" I turned to the voice, It was Spot. Speak of the devil.
"I'm sorry I'm late! I got caught up with a border patrol this morning and I just got them off of my hands" He grabbed my face and kissed my forehead.
"Lets get out of here before we catch the flu"
Before Spot had a chance to walk out I grabbed his arm "Spot I need to tell you something."
He looked confused and his enthusiasm from before ebbed. "What is it?"
I took a deep breath. "My Aunt...she wants me to go south."
Spot squared his jaw and gripped his cane "Are you going to go?"
"I don't want to but...Spot I can't stay here. "
"Yes you can. You can stay here with me."
"Spot there is a lunatic out there and I don't think he's going to stop until he gets what he wants"
"Damn it Violet. Do you think I would let anyone hurt you?"
"No but if I stay I'll only be a burden to my aunt. A useless mouth to feed. Spot I can't work with my leg like this"
Spot bit his lip and fixated his gaze on my eyes.
"I will not lose you. I'll work for the both of us"
"You can't work for the both of us Spot. That's your money"
Spot gave himself a moment to think before taking a deep breath.
"It could be or money"
I furrowed my brow "Spot I'm not taking your mo-
"Marry me"
I don't know how I feel about this. You guys need to tell me in the comments if I should replace this chapter because I'm really iffy about it.
