Chapter 17: The road to revolution
Fiyero stared to the monkey. He knew nothing about the monkey he was traveling with, all he knew that was that the monkey worked for the leader of the revolution. He knew Elphaba was one of the leaders, but rumours had grown that another leader had risen in Munckinland. There was not much known about this leader, just that no one knew where she had her head-quarters. Only him. If he had bad intentions, he could tell everything to the wizard. Luckily he only wanted to avenge Elphaba. Actually all he wanted was her back, yet that was completely impossible. He remembered that moment when he saw how she crashed to her death. They had been happy for a blissfully 5 minutes. He wanted more than that, he wanted a lifetime. A dream he would never once possess. He turned around staring at his children. The first few years of their lives they only had a mother, now they only had a father. It seemed that faith didn't give them both parents. He feared the moment when he needed to tell about their mother's death. He hoped it would never come up. Yet he knew for sure one day it would come up. That day would be the darkest of their short lives.
The monkey walked next to him. What was the name of this monkey? Did the creature have a family? What happened to his family? Fiyero feared the answers, may animals had sad stories. They had heart-breaking stories about loss. So he saved himself from the monkeys story.
"I'm Chistery." The monkey said. "You are Fiyero Tiggular, the prince and the guard. Why would you choose our humble organisation?"
"I've seen things." Fiyero replied. "Things you can't possible explain away. I don't want to be associated with a monster like the wizard anymore. He's guilty of countless crimes. I'm with the people who want him gone. Plus he killed the woman I love. The mother of my children. I will get my revenge."
"Revenge is hardly a humble motive." Chistery replied. "It is an honest one . I can't help what your wife would say, did she support our cause?"
"She did." Fiyero nodded. He didn't want to say he meant Elphaba. He was sure Chistery knew Elphaba. There was no animal in Oz that didn't know her. So he didn't want to say anything. He was unsure how they would look at him, were they to know. He stared at his children, they were still fast asleep. They couldn't know about their mother's death.
"You do know that joining our group is dangerous." Chistery explained. "You have children, leave Oz while you can, go to Quox. You can live away from the wizard, you need not think about what is going down here."
Fiyero looked at Chistery. The monkeys eyes were filled with emotion. It showed a certain worry about him, she told him to leave when the revolution needed him more. She told to find safety. He thought about it, running away from Oz. Leaving every responsibility in Oz. He couldn't do it. Elphaba and his parents had thought him better. His children deserved to be raised in a peaceful Oz. An Oz where animals and people could be free. Where families weren't burned with all their belongings. He knew the horrors, everything the wizard made him do. He would never be able to forget what he did to those families. He tried to save as much people as possible. Yet the 5 families that had been burn alive under his sight, were memories he could never forget. They were people that swore alliance to Elphaba.
"I've seen things I can't forget."
"Haven't we all?"
Nessarose enjoyed spending time with her sister. She watched as her sister grew stronger. Elphaba was a strong woman and she proved that again during these hard days. Glinda and Nathaniel wouldn't leave her side. Nessarose love how her sister was cared for. Yet she couldn't accept her sisters forgiveness. She kept thinking about everything she had done. Nathaniel walked closer to her. She felt something when he looked at her. She was not sure about what she felt for him. She hardly wanted to say it was love. She knew love meant heartbreak and she didn't want to feel anything, like that anymore. She would never take the chance of heartbreak again. Yet when Nathaniel stared at her. She could feel her heart go faster and faster. Slowly she moved to the balcony, staring over the country of Munchkinland. Once she had been mean, once she had been a cruel woman and she could never forget how awful she could get.
"This rebel do you know who it is?"
"I've send one of my best." She replied. "I don't know more about him, then you do. Maybe it could be a woman. I'm not even sure if this creature is human."
"That is very little we know." He turned away. He looked at her, guilt was still written in her eyes. He didn't understand why. Once he had seen her as a monster, a woman that had been too close minded to see past her religion. No that same woman had grown out to be perfect. She was kind, she was a leader to those who needed it. Part of him couldn't understand that he hadn't seen that part of her when she was younger. Had that part always been there? And was it jealousy that had turned her in to an ugly part? Or was it religion?
"I've done very awful thing." She replied. "Things that I can never forgive."
"We all deserve forgiveness if we changed our ways." He stared to the country. "You deserve to forgive yourself. You've suffered enough. Elphaba has forgiven you. Give yourself a chance."
"I can't be forgive for any of the words I've said." She turned to him. "I was supposed to be her sister and I betrayed her."
"Nessa, it's been years." Elphaba stepped next to her. "Years that I've grown not to care about what you said. I wanted to know what happened to my sister. Even after all those words, I could never stop loving you. Nessa, you are my family and no matter what you say, we'll always be family. You can never change that, I always wanted to see you again. Now I'm grateful. You have proven yourself to be brave. You have proven that you can admit when you're wrong. Some people can't even do that Nessa. You are brave, for everything you've done for Oz. You are just as brave as me, maybe even brave."
Nessarose reached for Elphaba. She pulled her sister in a hug. This had been the thing she wanted to do when she was all alone. She wanted her sister near. She wanted Elphaba to forgive her. Right now she truly had. She stared at Nathaniel. Yet forgiveness didn't change anything. She still knew that love for anyone but her sister would harm her. So she chose to only love her sister. That was the only kind of love she needed. When Elphaba released her, she stared at Nathaniel once again. She walked to the other side of the balcony. She moved her hand to the side of her face, there were tears in her eyes. Off course she would feel something about her sister's words. She turned around, Glinda and Elphaba had taken a place on the sofa.
"See you can forgive yourself." He smiled.
"Nathaniel." She smiled at him. "What did you used to think about me?"
"I thought you were a religious freak." He said honestly. "I didn't see who you truly were."
"You saw who I was back then, to perfection. I was a selfish, religious freak. One that was too insecure to understand that my sister could love more than one person. A person that couldn't see that my sister was in love with someone. Someone who didn't understand anything about love." She turned away. "Who says that deep down I'm not still that person?"
"You are still…" he paused. "You still believe, you just grown to where you can be open minded and courageous."
"I don't ever want to be that short sided again."
"You will never be…"
Days and nights had passed by, Fiyero had looked after his children when they awoke. Walker had a difficulty adjusting to him, yet it seemed that it could have been more difficult. He could have tried to run from him, instead the young boy followed his sisters words. She said that he was their father and that he could be trusted. She said that once her mother had trusted him. That was all the small boy needed to hear. That didn't mean he would talk to Fiyero when he was awake. In fact the small boy didn't say a word to Fiyero. He tried to keep his mouth shut. Part of Fiyero thought that Walker was nervous. Every part of him wanted to believe it. The monkey flew in front of them. It seemed that Ally knew Chistery. She told very little about the monkey. It seemed that the monkey didn't remember much about the little girl. So Ally didn't really talk about Chistery. Fiyero thought it might be not a good idea.
"I love Munchkinland." Ally said. "I always heard people are really small there."
"Most of them are." He replied. More he didn't say. He knew Boq off course, he had been from there. Yet there was little he knew about the others. You could not make a theory after watching one person. At least that's what he thought. That evening they slept in a cave. During the night all he could think about was Elphaba. He couldn't get the small details about the fall. He could not believe they drove her that far. She had children, it didn't make sense that she would do such a thing. She would try to make it for Walker and Ally. Yet she hadn't done that, instead she had taken her life. He thought about the pain she must have felt. The pain that he could feel in his body. They mistreated people in that place, he knew it. But now he knew it happened to Elphaba, it hurt so much more. He wished he had done something. He wished he started fighting earlier. Yet all he wanted to do was find Elphaba. What did he think would happen? Did he think she would agree to be with him? Did he think she would leave her believes behind? He had been stupid and right now as he went to fight for Elphaba's believes, he felt better. He knew the animals would take care of Elphaba's children. He knew there would be someone to take care of them. Yet he could not stop hearing his mother's words. 'you're their father'. He was. And he was planning something that was very risky. He was suicidal, because their mother was death and he didn't even want to stay alive for his children. He wanted to fight for a cause, while his children should be all the cause he needed.
"Dad?" He heard Ally's voice. "Something happened to mom, right?"
He didn't answer. Yet he knew that not answering was enough of an answer. The child knew his face, he knew the pain in his eyes. She turned to him and gave him a hug.
"I'm sure mom is in a better place." She stared at him. "Dad, promise to not leave…"
He almost wanted to say that he wouldn't leave, yet he couldn't keep such a promise. He was on his way to revolution and in ware there was always a chance you would die. He stared at Ally, her eyes were wide open. She only wanted yes as an answer. She wanted to know he would never leave. So he softly nodded that he would never leave. She fell asleep. The next morning they left pretty early. There was only a day of a walk left. Than they would arrive at the secret location. He thought about everything. He started to hesitate about everything. Did he really need to do this? Or was there a part in revolution that was completely safe?
Glinda stared at Elphaba. Nessarose was right in front of them. They were supposed to be talking about revolution, yet no plans seemed to make its way to the table. Nathaniel stared out of the window. He was trying not to say the first thing, there was an awkward presence in the room. Elphaba moved slowly, she stared at Nessa. She knew what needed to be done. The wizard needed to be killed, Madame Morrible needed to be murdered. Yet no one dared to say it. What they wanted was the power to Oz. They wanted to change Oz to something completely different. Yet she knew the first thing they needed to do was safe people. People were killed, it was pushed to animals. Now the wicked witch of the west was believed to be dead, everything was pushed to innocent animals.
"It can't last, Nessa." She said. "Innocent animals are accused with crimes they haven't committed and people are murdered in the name of safety. Because they don't agree with the wizard, things need to change."
"Elphaba, are you subjecting we assassinate the wizard and Morrible?" Glinda spoke. "I don't want to rise to…"
"It seems that the wizard has been doing that." Nathaniel stepped around the table. "To get rid of those people, you need to put them down. I'm afraid there's no other way."
"I think we need to be careful." Elphaba reacted. "We could be creating an even more powerful leader. If we do something wicked, we'll be seen as that. We need to stay clean, I know that killing them is the easiest way, it's not the right way. We need to overthrow them, expose the wizard for what he is. There are hundreds of ozians who don't know. I say we expose the wizard for the monster he is."
"He won't let any of us near…" Glinda spoke. "There's no way any of us can infiltrate and make him say something. Even if we have the spells to broadcast it."
"Are you sure the doesn't trust any of us anymore?"
When Glinda and Nathaniel had left, they thought the faith of the wizard had died with them. It would be too dangerous to see if that was actually true. Elphaba stared at the other people in the room. If only there were a way. Yet she didn't seem to find someone that could be infiltrating there.
"What about a potion?"
"Madam Morrible would know right away."
"I'll think about it." Nessarose nodded her head as she told the others to leave. She thought about it, was there anyone she knew that could infiltrate. Was there someone who was still trusted by the wizard. The only person that the wizard trusted was Fiyero Tiggular. The wizard trusted him, because he needed the Vinkus. In her mind Fiyero had always been loyal to the wizard. He had always protected the Emerald city as best as he could. If only Fiyero was on his way here, but there was no way Fiyero was the very man coming here.
"Anything?" Nathaniel entered the room. "You shouldn't be coming up with this plan."
"Maybe I could put myself in danger." She replied. "I am the governor of Munchkinland, maybe they would trust me."
"What if they don't? You'll end up dead."
"Who will care?"
"I will." He stared in her eyes, but she turned hers away from him. She couldn't fall for him. There was no way their love story could end well. She would get hurt in the end and that was the last thing she needed. She thought about Elphaba and she never had gotten what she wanted. In the end she had lost her children. Nessarose thought about all the ways she could be hurt and pulled herself away from him. She couldn't feel anything for him. She couldn't feel anything for anyone. She had learned after Boq. Boq had left her for Glinda. She thought about Boq, did they trust him in the emerald city? She shook her head. He wouldn't be left anywhere near the wizard. When she turned around, she noticed that Nathaniel was still watching her. She stepped to the balcony and looked down. The gardens looked so beautiful this time of the year. She looked at the roses. Her mother had seen all this.
"I need to solve this." Nessarose said.
"You have more than one person, Nessa." He stepped closer. "We'll solve this."
That moment there was a knock at the door.
He didn't know what the building had been at first, but it was big in a neighbourhood of forest and fields. Fiyero stared at it. It blended with everything. When you came close enough, you noticed how big the building was. Officially it didn't exist. No one ever came this far in the emerald city. No one. He had thought about coming here, yet he never did. Why was the revolution hiding in this building? Were there no better places more underground? Or were they trying to get caught? Slowly he walked closer to the building, noticing he didn't see doors right away. He stared at the monkey and followed him. They walked through a small forest, then they levitated a boulder to find a underground tunnel there. They went inside, the boulder was pulled on the tunnel once again. Then everything went dark. In a few seconds light was brought to the tunnel. There was a spell over the building, it had to be. It made the building look the way it did. In real life it might look very different. That was how they didn't get found. For him it appeared, because he knew where to find it. People who didn't know, would never find it. They walked up the stairs. Slowly the knocked on the door. That was when Chistery said Fiyero should enter alone, that he would bring the kids to another room. Fiyero agreed as Chistery took the kids with him. When he entered the room, the first thing he noticed was Nessarose. She opened her mouth widely from surprise.
"Fiyero Tiggular." She smiled. "You want to join our cause."
"I want to help." He replied.
"Elphaba will be glad you're here." She smiled. "I'll get her."
"Elphaba is dead…"
Elphaba was sitting behind the piano when she heard the door open up. That was when she heard the footsteps of three people. Two of them seemed to sound like her children. When she got up, she saw them. When Ally saw her, she screamed in happiness. Both of the children ran towards their mother, hugging here. She couldn't believe they were in her arms once again. What had happened to Fiyero? Had Chistery kidnapped her children? Was Fiyero looking for them? She needed to do something if that was true.
"Where they with a man?" Elphaba asked. "Fiyero."
"The prince of the Vinkus." Chistery replied. "He's with Nessarose."
That was all she needed to hear. She started to run, she knew exactly where he would be. She knew she needed to get there. She knew she needed to kiss him. She knew that she needed him right now. She didn't say anything to her children, but she was sure that they would know where she went. She noticed that no effort was too much. She ignored the animals she ran in to. She didn't apologize. All she thought about was seeing him. So she ran faster, when she entered the room, she saw him. He was surprised by something, yet she knew he hadn't seen her just yet. She didn't wait for his eyes to move towards her. She simple launched herself in his arms. She kissed him. It was everything she wanted in a month. She wanted him and she had always wanted him. Today he was here. Today he needed her. So he hugged her. When he let her go, he stared at her.
"You really are alive." He smiled. "How?"
"It was a plan." She looked at him. "I know it was mean and wrong and…"
"Will you marry me?"
