~Chapter 34~
-Scarlett-
The next morning, I smoothed my knee-long, waist-high skirt as I nervously knocked on Trudy's office door.
"Come in, lovely." Trudy answered and I slipped into the cheerful office "Ah, Scarlett! What can I do for you?"
"Hello, Trudy." I sit down "After everything that's happened these pass few days, it's been pretty awkward in my room, and I was wondering if I could move back in with Poppy and Lacy?"
"Oh, well, I suppose so. But it's up to you to move the bed and get switched." Trudy tells me
"Thank you." I nod and leave quickly into my room, where I see Robert sitting on my bed "Robert?"
"Oh, Scarlett, hey." He stands up
"Look, if your here to give me the whole condolence speech, I get it." I tell him
"No, actually, I came to ask you for help." He held up the small leather notebook I found the other day "Thought it would take your mind off it all."
I take the notebook and sit down on my bed beside Robert, "look, I'm not quite sure Lucas is up to, but it looks very well planned out." I tuck some of the hair in my face back and look up at Robert "You wanted a date right?"
"Yeah" He nods
I flip to the back to the book like in those old murder mystery shows and sure enough, in small cursive letters, a date "this Friday. I don't know why, but that's it."
"The same date as in the basement." Robert whispers "Scarlett! your a genius!"
"I just found a date..." I say, confused
"Your just are. Trust me." He smiles "What do you want?"
"What?" I ask
"Im gonna repay you." He tells me "lunch?"
"You dont need to." I protest
"But I am." He insists "Noon, yeah?"
I laugh "okay, yeah."
Once noon arrived, I pretended to be cool, but I wasn't. Was it a date? No, it couldn't be, not after what happened. But then again, it could be. I didn't know. And for a person who liked to have her head on straight, it was driving me crazy!
"Scarlett?" Robert woke me up from my daydream where I paced back and forth in the foyer
"Yeah." I look up
"Ready?" He asks
"I guess so."
He shakes his head and leads me to the back of the house, where there was a whole picnic set up and we sit down
"All this for breaking like 500 school rules and finding a date on a notebook?" I ask, joking
"Yeah, and I figured your could need a friend." He smiled, and I looked at him. Properly looked at him for the first time in a long time. He sat there, right next to me on the blanket, his left leg folded at a 90 degree angel whist his other was bent above it, his elbow resting on it. I looked at his eyes and saw the light shimmering in them as he smiled.
"I do have friends, you know." I inform him
"Oh, the same girls who tricked you into doing their dirty work for them?" Robert looked at me
"Yes...?" I half question
"I just feel bad after everything." He shrugs sympathetically
"You mean after I found out Alfie Lewis is actually my dad, which totally explains everything I've ever questioned, including why I look creepily similar to Kayla?" I ask
"Well... Yeah, but, I mean, I hope you do realize nothing changed, well for me at least." He confirms "Your still just Scarlett. Genius Scarlett. Reserved Scarlett. Shy Scarlett. Scarlett who knows what she wants and how she wants. Scarlett with a straight head. Cheerful Scarlett. Scarlett Jenks; the most complex, yet beautiful girl I've ever met."
And then, for just a moment, it was as if the world stop spinning, and everything just froze. Because, right then, Robert Rutter kissed me.
'Love is a poison. A sweet poison, yes. But it will kill you all the same.'
