Chapter 127

.

Ever since Febuary 4th there had been a number of rumors about president Mason. Everything from ELE being a hoax to Mason being the antichrist. Those who claimed ELE was a hoax said that he did it to sieze more power for himself. Some were now saying "I told you so." Although presumably Mason hadn't expected lunatict to detonate a nuclear bomb on American soil. Eve didn't take these people seriously, for the most part. But she did agree that Mason did tell the nation about the new plan to stop ELE when he did for a reason. Clearly people were panicking, maybe this would help calm everyone down. But if this idea failed, people might be less likely to believe in other plans. Mason promised that food rationing would be scaled back, normal courts would resume, this summer, after the asteroid was stopped. For now however, most people didn't mind. NASA had saved them all, they might've followed Mason almost anywhere. But Eve was uneasy about some things. People were arrested for continuing to preach about seccession, even state legislatures. Special courts sentanced people with little chance to defend themselves. Congress had already given Mason the authority to sieze private shelters. They offerred compensation to these owners, including colonel Samuels. He seemed a little crazy, some said he even oppossed mandatory vaccinations. But did that neccessarily mean he didn't have the right to do what he wanted with his own property? Samuels remained defiant, most people supported the government. Amy and the Sons of Liberty stood up for Samuels, his militia's right to do what they want with their own shelters. Eve tried to avoid hearing about this when she was with Amy. She never liked informing on these people. Especially now, she didn't want to lose Amy. On Sunday March 27th officer Murphy asked to see Eve in private. It was about the time of the month when he would tell her she'd earned another lottery chance.

.

Murphy: Congragulations, this makes twelve chances.

Eve: Thanks. It seems irrelevant now.

Murphy: I learned to always be prepared in the scouts. How do your friends feel about seccession now?

Eve: Noone's as eager for it as they were last month. Some still sympathize with colonel Samuels. I've been thinking, I want out. RJ's cutting back, I'm leaving his employ. I don't want to work for you anymore either.

Murphy: You've already earned twelve chances, sure you don't want more?

Eve: I'm good.

Murphy: And should you commit other illegal activities, I would have little reason to protect you.

Eve: I'll stay clean.

Murphy: Well if that's you're choice I shall have to respect it. I'll keep your former status as an informant confidential. You have a clean slate, you've already done your part.

Eve: Thank you.

Murphy: Stay safe Eve. Watch your back, be careful whom you trust.
