Chapter 128

Eve felt a sense of relief at being out. She was no longer in the black market, or police informant. But she thought about what officer Murphy said, about staying safe. Was it a subtle threat, or was her imagination playing tricks on her? Eve began thinking about her conversations with Murphy. The firstday they met he remarked that Eve had never even smoked a ciggarette before Febuary 4th. Maybe he smelled smoke on her and made an educated guess that she picked up this bad habit recently. After Eve's first hunting trip with Amy Murphy knew about the hunting, but not that Amy and Eve were a couple. Maybe he had other informants in the Sons of Liberty. Murphy never claimed that Eve was the only one, and he would've protected them. But Ee also wondered if one of his other informants might be close to home. Someone who didn't like Eve and might want her to get in trouble.

As a sidewalk counselor Eve had heard criticism that she was judging people. Nadia had quoted Malcolm X. "It is not my intention to condemn anyone. But I am for justice, no matter who is for or against it. I am against oppression and the killing of innocents no matter who is for or against it. If some people stand condemned from that then they stand condemned." Eve feared that Nadia was silently condemning some of her actions, particularly her relationship with Amy. After her mother's suicide islam had provided Eve with comfort and strength. But she still found herself unable to avoid sinning completely. Eve thought about the five pillars of her religion. She had done the profesion of the faith. She didn't prostelatyze but if anyone asked she admitted that she was a muslim. Eve gave to charity, both money and time as a sidewalk counselor. Eve prayed, and went to her mosque at least once a week. During the luner month of ramadan Eve had fasted from sunrise to sunset. This had required getting up early for breakfast and eating a big dinner after sunset. She was glad it was in December, with shorter days. After that there was just the pilgramige th Meccag, Eve planned to go one day. Eve wondered if all these things were easierfor Nadia, who had been born into the faith. Nadia confided in Evethat she had originally been a twin. But something had gone wrong in delivery. Nadia's brother, Mohammed, never left the hospital, spent his three weeks of life in a hospital incubator. Nadia had often wondered why Allah spared her and took Mohammed to Heaven. She belived Allah had work for her to do on Earth. After Febuary 4thNadia had tried to save as many as she could. That had led her to Jack's party, and to the mercy clinics. Eve was grateful for all Nadia had done for her, but feared she didn't have the same strength as Nadia.
