Chapter 133

.

Eve thought about what Amy had said. They had know Ted, eaten his meals, slept on his floor. Now he was gone, possibly prison, possibly even dead. On Sunday May 7th called officer Murphy in private.

.

Murphy: Eve, have you decided to return to our employ?

Eve: No. But that guy I told you about, Ted. He's missing. Did you guys arrest him?

Murphy: I can't discuss ongoing investigations.

Eve: It's true isn't it? I helped you guys make him dissapear.

Murphy: You helped protect your country against dangerous radicals.

Eve: But, I knew him.

Murphy: He made his choices, you made better ones. Be careful around your friends. I can only promise you that I won't betray your cover to them.

Wednesday May 10th. Eve barely remembered that it was 802 days until impact. Perhaps this was best, her mind was returning to normal. But she knew it was exactly one year since her mother's death. This made Eve nervous, particularly as Amy had given her a loaded gun. Dole was trying to sell some of the Ravenwood shelters to his employees union, might as well make what money he could. The union wanted six shelters, Dole offerred three. People suspected Dole would soon offer four, the union would suggest five. At that point it was just a matter of who blinked first. Next week congress was starting new hearings. They were investigating some actions during the year of terror. Mainly, what actions had been understandable, given the circumstances, and what fell under the heading of war crimes. They might even investigate rumors about the assasination attempt against Mason. Mimi seemed to be the main suspect, but Eve suspected that Mason's allies in congress would focus on general Douglas given how he was falling out of favor with the administration. But Douglas still showed up to work every day, Mimi still attended official functions. If the rumors were remotely true, why would the president keep them around.
