Chapter 135

On Thursday May 18th Eve, Nadia, and Amy were all studying together. They all had a horticulture test tomorrow. Quizzing each other with snacks helped them prepare. When they were finished Amy and Eve started walking home.

Eve: I like walking with you, but I can walk home by myself.

Amy: I know, I'm just protective. In the back of my mind I keep thinking, 794 days until impact. And, I don't get to see you as much, now that you stopped coming over to the campaign.

Eve: Sorry. Guess I'm just tired of politicd for now. Nadia asked me to come with her to Sangala this summer.

Amy: Are you going?

Eve: I don't know. What are you planning to do this summer?

Amy: I was planning to campaign for Chris Smith more. But I was also hoping to spend more time with you.

Eve: That would be nice. I've been thinking, about what I want to do with my life. I'm still not sure what I want to do, but I want to live. I want to swim in the ocean, eat a hot dog at a Phillies game. Someday, I want to have children. Beyond that, the specifics, career, college, that I still need to figure out. But I have the chance to figure it out now, do all this stuff. And I'd like to have you by my side as I do.

Amy: Whatever you need, for as long as you need.

During the reconstruction Eve thought about all she'd lost and all that she'd gained. She had found Allah, Nadia, and her beloved Amy. But she had lost her mother, Cujo. And Eve was embarrassed about Jessie, not being a virgin anymore. Eve thought about Adam. She hadn't seen her oldest friend in over a year. Despite everything, she hoped he was okay. One day, in late May, Eve went to see Adam's father, my Hellar.

Eve: Sir, I just wanted to find out about Adam. Is he okay?

Hellar: Yeah, he's back in school in West Virginia.

Eve: So, he's not coming back?

Hellar: I don't think so. He feels really bad about what he did to you.

Eve: Thank you, that means a lot. We all did some crazy things during the year of terror. Please, let him know that I forgive him. If he wants to come back, I'm cool with it.
