Chapter 138
.
After school Monday Eve went to work at Ravenwood. It helped take her mind off her likely break-up, for short periods of time. Mr Dole had agreed to sell the employee's union four shelters, they wanted five. On Tuesday Eve went to school, then attended prayer services with Nadia before protesting outside the mercy clinic. At school on Wednesday Amy approached Eve in the hallway. She still seemed angry, but said they needed to talk. They should do this after school, it could take awhile. Eve agreed to this. The rest of the day Eve had butterflies in her stomach. She feared that Amy wanted to officially break-up with her. A part of her feared it was even worse than that. If more of her friends were arrested, would Amy become angry enough to kill Eve? It seemed unlikely that Amy woud really kill Eve. But then she never thought Adam would give her a black eye. So Eve wouldjust have to wait a few hours until she and Amy could sort out their issues properly. Eve and Amy met after school as they'd agreed. Eve wasn't sure if Amy had her gun hidden somewhere, so part of her wished she'd brought hers. Eve egan smoking a ciggarette, fearing it might be her last.
.
Eve: What happenned to Chris Smith?
Amy: He'sin jail. They're trumping up charges against him, but his wife tells me he's safe. At least he hasn't had to sign a document saying he asked to be imprisoned.
Eve: They do that?
Amy: I'm not sure, but I've heard rumors. You're warning gave him the chance to destroy documents, gave others the chance to get away. Those who stayed behind to destroy evidence, they're paying the price for their loyalty.
Eve: Glad I could help.
Amy: How did you know about the raid?
Eve: Back when I worked for RJ, we bribed some cops. One was kind of protective towards me. He knew I hung with you guys, wanted to warn me.
Amy: Who was this cop?
Eve: I don't think he'd want me to say. He broke protocol to help me.
Amy: Makes sense. Only, I heard a rumor that you were an informant.
Eve: Who said that?
Amy: Does it matter?
Eve: If you take this person'sword over mine, yeah, it matters.
Amy: Please don't lie to me. I'm only going to ask you this once, I just want an honest answer. Were you ever a police informant?
.
Eve had lied to Amy before, and it hurt her. She feared what Amy might do, but Amy deserved to know the truth.
.
Eve: Yes Amy, I was an informant.
.
Amy was angry, Eve couldn't blame her. Perhaps Amy even wanted to hurt Eve, Eve wondered if she deserved it.
.
Amy: How could you? We were your friends. I trusted you with their lives.
Eve: I'm sorry. They busted me for selling contraband. They threatened to charge me with treason.
Amy: Treason? For selling shampoo and candy bars.
Eve: That's what they implied. I figured I'd just be telling him about radicals, terrorists.
Amy: Terrorists? We're just trying to protect ourselves.
Eve: So was I.
Amy: They gave you more lottery chances for informing on us. Didn't they?
Eve: Yes.
Amy: Are you even gay?
Eve: What kind of question is that?
Amy: It just seems a little odd that you only dated guys before. The first girl you kiss is one who helped you get valuable intel. So I'm wondering if it was all a lie.
Eve: It wasn't a lie. I don't know what I am. But I did fall in love with you. For what it's worth I tried to keep your name out of it. That's why I warned you.
Amy: You betrayed us, and them. That doesn't bode well for you. But I'll return the favor. I'll tell my group that I questioned you. And that I think you were falsely accussed. ut I never want to talk to you again.
Eve: Fair enough.
Amy: One last thing. You should know who betrayed you, who told me you were an informant. It was your stepmother, Karen.
