Chapter 143

.

Eve was unclear where the gunshot came from. It was obviously close, but from which house? Eve still wasn't enough of an expert to pinpoint the specifics. Despite the danger Eve rushed towards her house. When Eve got inside her father was on the floor, dead, covered in blood. Karen was standing over him, the gun in her hand, she seemed to pre-occupied to notice Eve. Eve attacked Karen, and grabbed the gun. This woman had claimed to be her friend, broke up her parents marriage, informed on her, aborted her little sibling, and now murdered Eve's father. Karen begged Eve to put the gun down. But Eve barely hesitated before shooting Karen in the chest.

After Eve shot Karen she felt a few seconds of joy. Then Karen was lying on the floor, bleeding, begging for help. Then it became real. Only then did Eve consider that maybe Karen hadn't murdered Zack. He could've shot himself. Or maybe he attacked Karen after finding out she'd informed on his daughter. Suddenly Eve was horrified at the realization of what she'd done. Eve called 911, said she needed an ambulance, because she'd just shot her step-mother. Waiting for the ambulance was nerve-racking. Eve knew she was going to prison for this. If Karen died Eve could get the death penalty. But this didn't frighten her as much as something else. If Karen survived she would testify against Eve. After all this woman had done she could turn Eve over to the police, even get more lottery chances. The thought of Karen standing in open court, telling the world what Eve had done, playing the victim. These thought made Eve angry all over again. At the very least Karen drove both of Eve's parents to suicide. Eve couldn't handle Karen in court, no matter what it meant to her. As Karen lay on the floor, bleeding and helpless, Eve put her hand over Karen's face. Karen struggled, but it was futile. Eve cut off Karen's oxygen. She kept her hand there until she was certrain that Karen was dead.

Shooting Karen had been a reflex, if nothing else rushed. But smothering her like that, it had been deliberate. There was no excuse, nothing she could tell the police to get off. Then Eve wondered, where were the police? She'd called 911, admitted to shooting Karen. They should've sent the police and an ambulance. And before Eve called the neighbors must've heard the gunshot, someone must've called. Eve realized she wasn't sure how much time had passed. It probably wasn't more than a few minutes, but sure felt longer. The cops would be here soon. Eve knew she didn't have much time. She grabbed some cash, what food she could. She put them in her purse, along with her gun. Sirens were in the distance, Eve just ran out the back and tried to put as much distance between them and herself as she possibly could.
