Chapter 145

.

When Eve woke up on Wednesday morning, it suddenly occurred to her that her bed felt unfamiliar. She opened her eyes, where was she? Eve became worried that she'd be late for school, she still hadn't gotten her grade from the report on vice-president Allen. Then Eve remembered, she'd murdered Karen, was hiding from te police. School became the least of her problems. Eve went to the diner to eat breakfast. She couldn't decide what her best course of action was on an empty stomach. As she ate eggs and hashbrowns with chocolate milk Eve savored what could quite possibly be her last meal as a free woman. During her breakfast a thought occurred to Eve. Maybe Adam would protect her. She knew him, he must feel great guilt, he'd likely help her, even from the police. If Eve could somehow make it to West Virginia, Adam would protect her. Then Eve saw the police car outside. Maybe they were here for her, maybe they were just hungry. Eve put money on the table, more than what breakfast cost, the rest could be a tip for the waitress. Although breakfast was unfinished Eve quietly walked away. But the police officers called for Eve. There was no denying it now, they were here to arest Eve. Instead of surrendering Eve fled back to her room. Her life was over, the free part of it anyway. But if she could get to her gun, she could spare herself from prison. Eve was sure this was the honorable thing to do. The world would be better off after she put this gun in her mouth and pulled the trigger. There had been one bullet that killed her father, one she used to kill Karen. There should stil be four bullets left. Eve put the gun in her mouth, officer Murphy came into the room. Murphy gestured, putting his finger on his temple. He told Eve she could kill herself that way, if that's what she really wanted, in the meantime this would make it easier for them to talk. Eve took the gun out of her mouth and put it to her head.

.

Eve: Do you know what I did?

Murphy: They say you murdered your father and step-mother.

Eve: I didn't kill my father. But yes, I shot Karen, then I smothered her to death with my bare hands. I'm sorry.

Murphy: I'm sorry too. I never should've brought you into this.

Eve: Karen told you what I was doing, didn't she?

Murphy: Yeah. She told me what you were doing with RJ, with Amy.

Eve: So, I murdered your informant. Now I'm definitely getting the death penalty.

Murphy: Not neccessarily. I want to help you.

Eve: Why? I don't deserve to live.

Murphy: I could've let you off with a warning, you were only 15. But I saw an opportunity. Karen was never going to be very useful, just informing on her friends and family. I saw potential in you.

Eve: Potential? To betray my friends, my fellow muslims? To tell Amy I loved her while I was informing on her?

Murphy: Yes. I'm sorry.

Eve: The world will be better off if I pull this trigger.

Murphy: How many bullets are left?

Eve: Four.

Murphy: If you really feel that way, shoot me. What harm would it do? Have your revenge. What's one more murder if you really want to commit suicide.

Eve: I don't want to hurt you.

Murphy: Then let me help you. I don't know what awaits us in the next life. But if you kill yourself, after committing murder, what does your religion say about that?

Eve: That I am damned. I might earn forgiveness if I accept man's punishment. But I'm scared.

Murphy: I know. I can help you. Please Eve, I don't want you to go to Hell.

.

Eve knew that officer Murphy was right. If she was to escape the fires of Hell she had to accept her punishment, as hard as it was. Eve put down her gun and accepted Murphy's handcuffs.
