Chapter 146
.
Murphy took Eve to the police station in handcuffs. When at the station Eve gave a full confession. It was a relief in a way, but the fear remained. Murphy had both protected her and used her the last time she was at this station. But back then Eve had just been selling candy bars and ciggarettes. This time she'd committed the cold-blooded murder of a police informant. What came next, only Allah knew for certain. The waiting made Eve more nervous, she kept thinking back to Karen, all that blood. She had done that to her. And now it seemed possible that Eve had driven both of her parents to suicide. She'd always carried the guilt of insulting her mother so soon before her suicide. Now she had the same guilt regarding her father. A part of Eve hoped for the death penalty. She'd finally be released from the pain of this world. And by accepting man's punishment she'd likely earn God's forgiveness. Right now, Eve didn't think she could stand another 767 days of this, longer if the missles succeeded.
Eve fell asleep briefly, she was exhausted from everything. When she woke up officer Murphy brought her dinner. A peanut-butter and jelly sandwich, brownie, and carton of chocolate milk. It actually made Eve feel good to eat like a child again, she was grateful for this.
.
Murphy: I've spoken to the district attorney's office. Given your past sevice working on an Ark, helping to prevent multiple terrorist attacks. They're willing to offer you a plea bargain.
Eve: Would it involve the death penalty?
Murphy: No. They're still preparing the Arks, hopefully just as a precaution. Finding workers has been somewhat difficult lately. Juvenile offenders however, wanting to work time off a prison sentance.
Eve: They want me to uild another Ark?
Murphy: Not exactly. The Arks are all built, but they need fuel. They're drilling for oil in Texas for the fuel.
Eve: I don't know anything about oil.
Murphy: They'll teach you, if you want this.
Eve: Sure, thank you.
Murphy: Good. Chances are it will be for two years, until your 18th birthday.
Eve: I can do two years.
Murphy: We'll make the arrangements immediately. I believe you even know the man in charge of this particular site. Colby, I believe he's a friend of your employer mr Dole.
