Chapter 151

.

Eve's second day working on the oil rig was a little easier than the first day. She had to ask someone what day it was. Sunday June 18th. Someone said it was 763 days until impact. Fewer days than that until Eve's 18th birthday, then she'd be free from this. This Sunday was hard, as was the days after that. Each day started by being woken up, shower, breakfast. A work day of more than 8 hours with only a short time for lunch. Then shower, dinner, and ack to her cell. One morning the guards brought Eve her breakfast. They just said it was her day off. They didn't let her out of her cell at all this day. Eve tried to rememer, the previous day was June 20th, that made today June 21st. As hard and hot as the work had been, Eve still wanted out of her cell. Without the work, today would be even longer.

On Friday June 23rd Eve was brought out of her cell for breakfast. She saw some other new recruits. They seemed to have just gotten out of their cells for the first time. Eve remembered that feeling. What suprised Eve about them, was she recognized one. Unless here eyes were playing tricks on her, this was Jessie, Eve wanted to say hello to her old friend.

.

Eve: Jessie?

Jessie: Eve? Aren't you a sight for sore eyes.

Eve: What are you doing here?

Jessie: Apparently, I'm an oil man. After the Arks were all built, they needed to gather fuel, livestock. I worked as a farmhand for awhile. They transferred me here, I want to say on Monday. What's the date?

Eve: June 21st.

Jessie: Oh good. I was only in there for four days.

Eve: It takes a little while to re-adjust after coming back out.

Jessie: I assume they did it to me because I robbed that store. Why are you here anyway?

Eve: The cops arranged a plea bargain. I killed a woman. I thought she killed my father, but truth is I already hated her.

Jessie: Wow. Aren't you grown up?

Eve: I'm not proud of it. I figure I probably deserve whatever they do.

Jessie: Yeah, most of us here are convicted felons. Even with lottery chances it's hard to get workers. I'm sorry you wound up here, but I am glad to see a familiar face.

Eve: Yeah. If we have to be here at least we're here together.
