Chapter 153
On Friday June 30th Eve was being brought from breakfast to work again. She saw some new recruits being brought to solitary confinement. This seemed to be Park's way of letting them know who was in charge. But Eve saw a familiar face among this new batch, Amy. Eve knew how scary it was, she couldn't let Amy suffer too much. She yelled to Amy. Amy ws scared, but looked relieved to see Eve. The guards tried to stop Eve, but she kept yelling. As the guards dragged Eve away she still yelled that it was only for a couple of days. They'd put them in solitary confinement for a couple of days, then let them out. She knew it might mean another day in solitary, but she still told them all not to be scared.
Eve was thrown back into her cell. At least they didn't take away her books this time. She was still reading "The Count of Monte Cristo." Eve also thought about what they would do to her. She's proven that she wouldn't be a very good informant. Still, Eve was glad Amy at least knew what to expect. But then Eve began wondering, what exactly was Amy doing here? Maybe the FBI was rounding up rebels, forcing them into these places. Eve tried telling herself that Amy wasn't exactly secret about her militia ties even before she met Eve. But Eve couldn't help but think that her informing got Amy sent here. On Saturday July 1st the guards brought Eve out for shower, breakfast, and eventually work At breakfast she saw Amy. Amy seemed a little dis-oriented, Eve sat next to her.
.
Eve: Are you okay?
Amy: Yeah. The sun takes some gettine used to after that.
Eve: I remember. Did Park have you brought to his office first?
Amy: Yeah. So the lecture is standard?
Eve: Apparently. How'd you get here?
Amy: Benteen's been rounding up rebels. He's out of control, I'm not sure even Mason can rein him in.
Eve: I'm sorry, for what I did to you.
Amy: Thanks. It wasn't just you. These agents raided our place. They gave me a chance to go free if I ratted the others out. I refused, I'm guessing others weren't so loyal. Did you really murder Karen?
Eve: Yeah. I figure I deserve whatever happens to me.
Amy: Not everything. You still deserve to be able to shower without guards looking at you. To get an hour a day of excercise and recreation.
Eve: Isn't this place standard for prisons?
Amy: No, even murderers deserve etter than this. Listen, when they threw me in solitary, it was really scary. It helped knowing I had a friend waiting out here.
