Chapter 155
.
July 4th was exactly one year since the attempt on Mason's life. Security seemed more on edge than usual. Despite the intense heat Eve tried not to piss them off. Her patience was an asset rigt now. She feared that the heat, combined with the date, might make these guards trigger happy. Today was suppossed to be independance day. But there were no festivities here. Eve wasn't sure if it was ecause this was a prison, or because of the countdown. Either way the lack of cheer emphasized how bad this place was.
After seeing Jessie and Amy again Eve felt different. She was grateful to see familiar faces here, even if they only saw each other at meals, and not even every day. It also seemed like they were waiting for Eve to choose one of them. She had cared for both of them, she didn't want to be shared like a whore. Eve wasn't even sure she wanted to date either of them right now. She was well aware that sexual morality had decreased since Febuary 4th, but Eve still considered herself monogomous. Besides colonel Park still expected her to inform on people planning to destroy the Arks. Unlikely that Jessie or Amy wanted that. If anyone was planning this they weren't talking about their plans with Eve. She was grateful for this.
On Friday July 7th Eve heard some rumors from new workers. This site's isolation meant that the workers' best source of information was fresh new recruits. Some guards were known to give intel for those with something to offer. But Eve had nothing that she was willing to just give away. General Frederick Douglas, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, was under arrest. He was alledged to have helped agent Pierce try to assasinate president Mason last year. Some however believed he was arrested because he'd become too vocal a critic of Mason's policies, particularly saying how Mason planned to sieze private shelters soon. Getting new intel from workers was often difficult. Eve was limited to what these individuals knew, what they's studied before being sent here, or pure rumors. Some enjoyed rumors of Zoey Allen and Jed Mason having three-ways with other boys and girls, more interesting than the political situation. It somehow seemed more exciting than the possibility that George Mason was suppressing dissent. There was another rumor, that director Benteen's wife had been murdered by his mistress. She'd confessed, claimed she acted alone. Denied any involvement by Benteen even as they executed her. To some, that was more exciting than the FBI running amok and making mass-arrests. Those who'd preferred actual news, they seemed a bit radical. But they did make some good points. Eve wondered, if the missles were going to destroy ELE, why was Mason getting ready to sieze the good private shelters?
