Chapter 158
.
On Wednesday evening Eve was eating dinner in her hospital bed. Jessie came to see her. They talked for awhile. Eve joked that this was her first real vacation in almost a year. Jessie mentioned a rumor that Zoey Allen was coming here tomorrow. Apparently Mason was interested in documenting these sites. Zoey still did her part for the cause, as amateur filmmaker. Eve became excited about once again being in the movies. But then she wondered, what should she say? It wasn't exactly a secret that most workers here were convicts. Should Eve admit why she was here? Should she talk about colonel Park's cruelty? Would Mason help if he knew these things? Or did he already know? And if Eve talked, would she only make things worse for herself and the other workers?
Amy came to see Eve on Tursday morning. She apologized for not coming earlier, the guards wouldn't let her before.
.
Amy: Did you hear the rumor?
Eve: About Zoey Allen? Yeah, she's kind of cool.
Amy: I guess she's okay. She'll probably want to interview people in the clinic.
Eve: Should I tell her about what Park is doing?
Amy: I wouldn't. Her film crew probably knows already. If they don't, Mason won't let them air the truth.
Eve: You think Mason knows aout Park?
Amy: Probably about him and others like him. Even if he doesn't, others like Benteen will stop you.
Eve: And Park will just retaliate against me, or others.
Amy: Yes he will. Park is campaigning for a spot on the Ark. Showing he has what it takes for their discipline.
Eve: Jessie thinks I should talk. Maybe we can stop Park.
Amy: He'll only be replaced, maybe by someone worse. Park, like Goerge Mason, is just a product of his environment. I care about you Eve. Be very careful what you say to these people.
.
Eve thought about what Amy had said, and what Jessie said. Zoey Allen had seemed nice when Eve first met her last year. But could she really persuade the president to stop guys like Park? Texas governor Santos had seemed to opposse these kinds of measures. This was his state, maybe he could help. Then the guards came, they transferred some people to a different area. Some of these patients had seemed a little crazy, and Eve didn't like the way one patient, Paul, was looking at her. Presumably Park was just keeping them out of sight to prevent them from hurting the second daughter, or from embarrassing him in front of the cameras. But seeing them being taken away like this, helped emphasize Amy's warning. Eve decided to be very careful what she said to these people.
