Chapter 159

.

Eve was sitting in her hospital bed, playing solitaire and getting plenty of bed rest. Zoey came around 12pm, along with Erica, the president's press secretary. They began interviewing people in the clinic. One of the patients made a wisecrack about Erica, rumor was she used to be president Mason's mistress. A Secret Service agent gave him a look, and he shut up. Zoey and Erica avoided interviewing him. They eventually interviewed Eve. Zoey recognized her, but couldn't remember from where. Evidently Zoey had interviewed a lot of people. Eve told Zoey about how they'd met twice before, once on the Ark in Pennsylvania, once at the white house reception. Zoey asked Eve how she'd come here, both to the oil site, and to the clinic. Eve admitted what she'd done, how she'd murdered her step-mother because she's wrongly believed that Karen murdered her father. When asked about the clinic, Eve said she'd collapsed from dehydration. Eve didn't mention that she'd tried to get water and was denied. She even said she should've asked for some water. This implied it was somewhat her own fault, not the guards' or colonel Park's. Zoey seemed fooled. Either she'd heard similar stories from others, or she was fooling herself. Eve felt bad about lying, but felt it was the best way to avoid Park's wrath. And a part of Eve still thought this was the best way to get a spot on the Ark. If the missles failed, 738 days until impact.

Jessie and Amy both came to see Eve on Thursday evening. Eve was in the ladies room when they arrived. She heard them talking, arguing actually. When Eve got out she would pretend she didn't hear what they said. But for now, Eve was listening intently.

.

Amy: How could you put her in danger like that?

Jessie: I did what I felt was best, for her, for all of us.

Amy: Do you really thing the government doesn't already know? Do you think what happenned to Eve was an isolated incident?

Jessie: Zoey Allen seemed to like Eve. Maybe she could help, that's why I told her the truth.

Amy: You want to fight these guys, we need to do it quietly. I have contact with some people.

Jessie: I'm not trying to overthrow the government, I just want to protect her. I thought that's what you wanted.

Amy: I do. But this is about more than just the three of us. If all you want is her, and you don't care about the struggle, than maybe Eve is better off with you.

Jessie: Thanks. But I already know which one of us she'll choose. Whoever can give her the best chance to survive.
