Chapter 164

.

On Sunday morning Eve and Jessie briefly saw each other heading to their respective shifts. They began humming the words from the songs they heard last night. They couldn't remember all the words, but they were about a man who killed his best friend for stealing his wife. During her shift Eve heard a rumor. There had been an accident in another area. A fire started, three workers were dead. Eve tried to remember, was this accident where Jessie was working? Her supervisor told everyone to keep working, take safety measures, but today was still a work day. Eve would have to wait until after her shift to visit the clinic to see if Jessie was okay.

After her shift on Sunday Eve was allowed to visit the clinic. She did see a familiar face here, but it wasn't Jessie. It was Colby, the friend of mr Dole from Ravenwood. Colby seemed hurt, but fully aware of where he was, what was going on.

.

Eve: Mr Colby, remember me?

Colby: You were that secretary from Ravenwood, one of the few people not to proud to take out the trash. It's just Colby.

Eve: Yeah. I heard you owned this place, but I haven't seen you here before.

Colby: I used to own this place. Then the state took away my property, made me stay to teach the workers how to use the technology. I take it you're another free-thinker sent to this place by Benteen and Mason.

Eve: Actually, I murdered my step-mother.

Colby: Wow. After 2/4, I saw guys who never would've hurt women before, beat their wves, even rape women.

Eve: Were you near the accident?

Colby: Yup. The equipment was faulty, I told Park that. Did he listen, no.

Eve: Was there a worker named Jessie there?

Colby: Young man, in prison for armed robbery before all this?

Eve: Yes. Is he okay?

Colby: I'm sorry darling. He was right next to the rig when it exploded. Poor kid never had a chance.

.

Although she realized Colby was telling the truth, Eve still had to see the list of the dead for herself. But, when it finally came, Jessie's name was indeed on it. There was no other evidence, other than looking at the actual body. But it was probably too burned too recognize, and Eve just couldn't see Jessie like that. Another person she loved was dead, and Eve couldn't even say goodbye. Eve might've thought that, being a murderer herself, she could handle death better. Eve could function like this, return to work tomorrow, but it was becoming harder. On the way back she ran into Amy. Amy knew what had happenned, and that Eve just needed a friend right now. Before the guards could stop them Amy hugged Eve to comfort her.
