Chapter 168
.
Eve was back in her cell before her official wake-up. It seemed she was officially a rebel now. She wondered, did other informants defect like this? If nothing else they must've been torn, either way they'd etray friends. What would ultimately happen? According to Colby the rebels included groups like the Sons of Liberty, also the police who worked as security guards for companies like Ravenwood. Eve wondered if these rebels could protect her. And even if they won, would Eve get space on an Ark. A part of her wanted out of this, even if it meant more prison time. She knew she deserved to be punished for what she'd done, but Eve knew she couldn't let Amy down. For better or worse, she was in.
On Monday July 31st Eve heard things from the guards. They weren't talking to her, just to each other, but Eve still heard things. The previous night a group of Hollywood celebrities hosted a murder mystery party, in which a number of them were actually killed. Suppossedly it was a last moment of glorious fame, the last way to be rememered before the end came. Benteen had lso been murdered in a seperate incident. A revolutionary killed Benteen. Ironically the assasin had also been an informant, he killed Benteen and faced execution, all to prove his loyalty to his fellow revolutionaries. Mason had also brought general Gardner out of retirement for the upcoming war. Gardner was believed to be extreme. During the Afghan war he'd used nerve gas against at least one village of civilians. Now, it seemed Mason was going to use Gardner's methods to put down the rebels. At least six state legislatures voted to secceed. General Douglas had already become this new country's first president. Texas secceeded, governor Santos supported this. The guards were scared. With 720 days until impact, they were bascially caught in enemy territory. Some guards had even commited suicide, they might've also been distraught over ELE still coming. Eve felt sorry for the guards. She didn't understand much about politics, but it seemed war was coming. Maybe it was already here. Was this America's second civil war, world was III, or both? Eve couldn't avoid this completely. She vowed to protect Amy. Saving Amy, getting them both into an Ark, that was what matterred to Eve.
Eve barely got any sleep on Monday night. She kept thinking about what tomorrow might bring. Not to mention the day after that, and the day after that. Eve also considered the situation that brought her here. She'd murdered a woman, one she once considered a friend. But, had she been wrong when she thought Karen killed her father. Eve really didn't know if Zack committed suicide. Maybe he had. Maybe he argued with Karen, after learning that she'd informed on Eve, tempers got the best of them. For that matter, had Kendall really killed herself? Eve couldn't remember if Karen was at school that day. But, either way, Eve killed Karen in cold blood, without knowing any of these things for sure. Maybe shooting Karen had been an angry reflex, but then Eve smothered a helpless woman who was begging for her life. Eve knew she belonged in juvenile hall for what she'd done. But juvie wasn't suppossed to be this bad. There, she'd have school and job training classes, so that after her release she'd be better prepared for honest work. She'd be able to shower without guards looking at her private parts, wouldn't be forced into dangerous, life threatening work. Did Murphy know about the political situation in Texas when to he sent her here? Assuming she'd continue to be an informant? Maybe Allah would judge her actions later. But in this life, Eve would not let herself be treated like this. She vowed to get her dignity back.
