As soon as Elvin was out of sight, Holly turned and made a mad dash up the stairs. Juliet and Artemis went to Butler's side, to make sure he was okay- but Artemis also took the time to be curious as to where Holly was going.
"Dom!" Juliet gasped, putting a hand on the injured shoulder. "Are you okay?!"
Butler winced at the touch. "Yes, so long as you don't touch it." She immediately took her hand off.
Holly returned back, running as fast as she could down the stairs with her gun. They heard the sound of an engine outside. By the time Holly had reached the first floor, and was out the door, it was too late. Elvin had already taken off in the shuttle he'd arrived in.
"D'Arvit," she swore, under her breath. She turned, to see Foaly was galloping down the stairs in specifically her direction. They met each other halfway.
"You've been listening?" she presumed.
Foaly replied, "Yeah."
"Do you know who he is? Besides his name?"
"I do. Elvin used to be an LEP officer, but he was fired because of a mental illness," he said. "He didn't give us any trouble; we haven't heard from him in forever..."
"My guess is he's been tracking Lilac for all those years," Holly said. At the mention of Lilac, Foaly and Holly averted their eyes to Butler. He was sitting against the wall, Juliet was coming back with some supplies to treat his arm. Artemis caught their eye and started to walk over.
"Well, do we know where he's going?" Holly asked, as Artemis joined their duo. "I mean, obviously we're not going to let him get away with this. Right?"
Foaly shrugged. "Well, maybe there's a record of where he's staying... Oh- I know! The LEP has a tracker on every shuttle; I'll pull that up and find out where he is. Holly, you figure out who's going, and who's not."
The captain nodded. "Okay, will do."
Foaly gave them both a reassuring smile, and then left to run up the stairs, back to his computer. Holly caught Artemis up on what happened to Elvin; "Foaly recognized Elvin," she told him. "He was with the LEP a long time ago, but they forced him to leave because of his mental illness."
Artemis nodded. "Okay," he said.
"Report on Butler?"
"He's hurt."
Holly rolled her eyes. "Thanks, I got that."
"That's all we can say now, but Butler is determined to save Lilac. I told him that we, you and I, would be quite capable of if ourselves. He is still quite insistent," said Artemis in slight disapproval.
"Butler is in love with Lilac. Of course he wants to come!" Holly said, mentally shaking her head. How could someone be so intelligent, yet so clueless?
"I still don't-"
"We need Butler, too. He can provide extra protection in case something goes wrong," Holly reasoned, interrupting Artemis.
Artemis pursued his lips and narrowed his ice cold blue eyes at Holly, still quite irritated with Holly for interrupting him. A crease came into his forehead as Artemis thought about it. "Very well, my dear Captain. Go tell Butler we will be leaving shortly."
Holly smiled at her success and went over to tell Butler, but it seemed as if she had actually walked into a battlefield. Butler and Juliet were arguing about Juliet coming, or not coming, on the rescue mission. Juliet's lovely face was marred by the angry expression on her face and Butler, who was at first just exasperated, was starting to become frustrated.
"Juliet, you are not coming and that's final!" If Butler had a table nearby, he would've slammed his hand on it.
"No! Just because you think I'm still a little girl, I still know a lot. I'm a Butler, too, and I'm going to help," said Juliet, the angry expression still in place.
"Someone needs to stay back with the twins. We can't leave them alone at a time like this!"
"Foaly's staying, isn't he?"
Butler responded to this with, "Foaly's working. We can't have him distracted."
Juliet was getting even more frustrated as the argument progressed. It really pissed her off that Domovoi didn't want her to go... she went through training, just like he did. He was a better bodyguard by far, but that didn't mean she was totally incapable. And while she knew he was just worried for her, as her big brother... she wished he would keep his worrying to himself.
"I am going, and that's final," she said, firm. "Why doesn't Artemis stay behind?"
"I won't let you go without me," Artemis interjected. He tried so hard to resist a quick glance at Holly, and failed... and regretted it. "Because... if Foaly's staying here, then I need to go, to be the brains in the brawn."
Juliet smirked, like, yeah. That's why. "Nooo," she coed- her attitude completely flipped, "you just don't want Holly-"
"Shut up." Artemis knew exactly what she was going to say, and he let out a long and heavy sigh. When he felt his face heating up, he became afraid that he was blushing... So to them he said, "I'm going to see how Foaly's doing." And he left the room.
After excusing himself, Artemis walked up the stairs, and arrived in the doorway of Foaly's open room. The centaur was sitting at his desk, typing away on his computer.
"Foaly." Artemis addressed the centaur as a way of announcing himself. Artemis almost leaned on a a chair near the computer Foaly was working on as he announced himself, but he immediately banished that temptation. Fowls don't lean. "What are you doing?"
"Setting up the LEP tracker," said Foaly absentmindedly, deep in concentration. "And if you don't want to be looking for Elvin on a wild goose chase in Canada, you better not interrupt me."
Aretmis arched an eyebrow at Foaly. What a smart aleck, and when did he become so demanding? Nevertheless, Artemis continued to stand with perfect posture, wisely not making a sound. Soon, there was a little ping and Foaly clapped his hands so loudly, it almost sounded like a whip being cracked. Foaly turned to Artemis with his mouth slightly upturned. "I found him."
"Very interesting. Where is he?"
"The Copper Coast of Ireland. Hmm. I wonder why he didn't leave the country," Foaly wondered aloud.
"He's a madman, remember?" Artemis got up to go downstairs and tell the others.
"Yes, but so are you," Foaly quipped.
Artemis corrected him, "I am a genius."
"And a mad man."
"Debatable. Now, downstairs Juliet and Butler are arguing over who should stay behind to take care of the twins," he said. "Butler is hurt, but still going. We need him. I am going, and so is Holly."
"I'll stay back with the twins," Foaly replied, sparing the young boy a glance. "I thought that was already decided." Then he gasped. "Oh! I have a job for you..." He started shuffling through his desk drawer for something. The words 'I have a job for you' irked Artemis; Foaly was talking like he was his superior. But he held back any biting words.
Foaly handed him what looked to be an ordinary flash drive. Of course, Artemis knew it was anything but.
"When you infiltrate his fortress, or whatever it is," Foaly instructed, "find the computer database and plug this in, then install the software. After my program is on there, it'll gather all the files and send them to me on an email. Who knows? This guy might have some important information- important for saving Lilac, or important to the LEP in general."
"Very well," Artemis agreed. "What is the software titled?"
"It's the only big file on there; called 'Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now'." Foaly grinned at Artemis; obviously that was supposed to be a joke. But Artemis just stared. "Captain Phillips?" Foaly hinted.
"Because I'm taking over the computer?" He sneered, continuing, "Tell Holly; she'll get it."
Artemis arched an eyebrow at Foaly with a dubious expression. Merely nodding in a cryptic fashion at Foaly's request, Artemis went downstairs to update everyone else. When Artemis reached the main room, Juliet and Butler were still going strong in their argument and Holly was sitting down on a chocolate brown, classically designed chair with a tired expression. Artemis surveyed the scene with a critical eye before making his presence known.
"Hello," said Artemis simply, but with a smirk underlying the message. "I see nothing has changed while I was upstairs."
"Arty!" Juliet whined. "Make Butler let me come! He says I have to watch the twins, but that's just an excuse. I have to come!"
Artemis looked into Juliet's distressed face and then up at Butler's face, pleading Artemis to veto it. The Irish youth thought about it for a moment as the two siblings stared at Artemis. Finally, after a long moment of waiting Artemis came to a decision.
"I'm sorry, Juliet. You must stay behind and take care of Myles and Beckett. Foaly will be too busy."
Juliet's face fell and Butler looked extremely relieved.
"Now come on, let's call in a shuttle and find Lilac," Artemis said, refusing to meet Juliet's eyes. Holly wasn't quite sure what to make of his decision, but he gave him a careful eye as he walked past and up to Foaly's room, to do what Artemis had said.
Juliet shot Butler a glare that, if looks could kill, would've reduced him to a tiny pile of ash on the ground. "Good luck," she snapped, like a viper, and walked up the stairs to the room where Myles and Beckett were waiting. Butler's heart sank under her words.
In a quiet voice, he asked the only other person in the room, "Did I do the right thing?"
Artemis didn't have an answer. What he gave wasn't an answer, but it was the best thing he could say. "We're going to save Lilac," he said.
Butler nodded. Giving no comfort to the wound in his arm, he walked out of the room, with no destination in mind, but he needed to walk away for a second. Holly came down when he had left.
Trying to quickly move on from the awkward situation, Holly stepped up to let the others know about the good news.
"I already called in a shuttle," said Holly. "While I was waiting for Butler and Juliet to stop arguing."
Artemis looked at Holly with a peculiar expression, that was about as close to praise as Artemis could get to. That filled Holly with some sort of feeling that was indescribable, but she quickly pushed it aside. There was work to be done and a rescue mission to be planned.
Holly nodded. "It should be here within the hour."
Artemis folded his arms and stared at Holly with his cold, blue eyes. "Tell me, Captain," Artemis said in an eerie voice, "do you think Lilac has within the hour?"
Holly scowled at Artemis and the tips of her ears turned red. How dare he say that to her! "How dare you!" Holly cried, voicing her thoughts. "Treating me like some incompetent fool? Who can't sense the urgency of this? Well, I'm not a fool and I do realize how urgent it is! The shuttle will be here within the hour and you better be ready."
Artemis was taken a little off guard by her tone. He hadn't meant to offend her personally... but he let himself be talked down to, just this once, out of respect for Butler. He didn't want anyone else to fight, or else their plans would fall apart at the seams. "I apologize, Captain," he said, then couldn't resist adding, "I did not mean to offend you."
Holly sighed. "It's fine... We can't fight now. Let's just calm down and be ready."
Artemis almost smiled. Exactly the right move.
For the next hour, Butler focused on healing his arm, Holly went to her room and gathered a bag full of weapons and stuff they would need, and Artemis read up on Elvin with Foaly, memorizing as much information as they could. When the shuttle came around to the manor, they loaded into it and didn't waste any time. Lilac didn't have much time.
