Chapter 180
.
On Thursday September 7th Eve noticed some tension among the regular farm hands. She decided not to ask about it. They didn't neccessarily trust her, and she couldn't afford to make them more suspicious. But around noon Dale, the foreman, called all the farm hands to the barn. A cow was giving birth, but there were complications. It seemed unlikely that both mother and child would survive. Colby was here, helping Dale deliver the calf. There was a lot of blood, Eve wondered if this was normal. Dale and Colby seemed worried. The newer farm hands seemed grossed out by this, but Eve just silently watched. There was no substitute for experience, and this was a useful skill to learn. After much work, they saved mother and child. Eve was allowed to hold the baby calf briefly. It felt good. In the midst of all the pain and chaos, a new life had come. And they even trusted her with this new life.
Eve showered after holding the baby calf, and again before leaving the farm. She still felt the desire to shower when she reached the house. Eve saw mr Sanchez talking to a police officer. She decided to go around the back, this was none of her business. But Eve did see one thing briefly. Sanchez gave the cop some money, the cop gave Sanchez a phone. It wasn't a big secret that most cops were on the take since 2/4. Her old boss RJ had bribed his fair share of them. The collective government was suspicious of avowed loyalists who stayed here, often monitored their e-mails and phone calls. Miguel seemed harmless, did chores around the house, a daily work-out, eating alone, and usually falling asleep in front of the tv watching old sitcoms with a beer. He said how he'd love to talk to his son again, without government intrusion. Eve couldn't imagine her government telling Miguel Sanchez valuable intel, this deal must be about talking to Miguel Jr. Despite her past activities, Eve saw no reason to tell the authorities about this.
