Chapter 186
.
On Friday October 6th Eve saw Lee watching the news. He looked worried, whatever he was watching wasn't good.
.
Eve: What's wrong?
Lee: They're talking about Virginia and West Virginia. They're not connected to any other collective states, that puts them in danger. They're organizing citizens' militias, but I'm worried about them.
Eve: They secceeded because they thought they'd have back-up, now we're abandoning them.
Lee: Yeah. Those militias could march on Washington, cause some serious damage. Them Mason woud have them slaughtered. I'll bet Santos hopes for that, so he won't have to take any risk, or get his hands dirty.
Eve: Doesn't seem right.
Lee: It ain't. I'm going out, vent my frustrations with like-minded individuals. You're welcome to come.
Eve: Why not, I could use some cooling down myself.
.
Colonel Park's cruelty helped make the take-over of his oil site bloodless. Even his guards were hesitant to risk their lives to help him. Other take-overs had been bloodier. 135 Texans had died fighting for the ollective army. Although Lee had always loved Texas he considered Santos to be dis-honoring their memory by trying to declare Texas a seperate republic. At the meeting Eve saw about six others, one was even wearing a police uniform, but everyone here trusted him. The host gave Eve a beer, despite her age. He felt that someone old enough to be a war veteran was old enough to have a drink. This seemed to be the Brotherhood of the Wolf, although two of the others were female. They were pretty angry, but noone was talking about terrorism. They felt betrayed by Santos, needed to vent to each other.
On Saturday October 7th Amy and Eve were watching governor Santos on tv. He was talking about what procedures he planned for selecting people for the Arks. Some would be chosen for special skills, most by random lottery. Native Texans would have the most chances, some refugees would e admitted to the Arks. Political prisoners and petty thieves would have fewer chances, but not completely excluded. But Santos assured the reporters that murderers and rapists would not be on the Arks. This hit Eve hard. Amy hugged her for comfort. They were afraid, but this was also a bit of a relief. Eve didn't have to worry about being selected because that was no longer an option. It was over.
