Chapter 187
.
Eve went to her mosque on Sunday October 8th. With no chance of getting into a Texas Ark, and only 651 days until impact, she felt the need to pray. Maybe there was the chance of a Ravenwood shelter, having worked for the company and being the daughter of a deceased Ravenwood executive, but both Mason and Santos were siezing up private shelters. Maybe the Saudi government would get her in, but she was still an American, that would count against her. To Mason she was a traitor, to Douglas she was a Texan, to Santos Eve was a collectivist. An however she looked at it, Eve was a murderer. After the prayer services the imam began colecting money for the homeless. Eve gave him half the money she had. She figured that her priority should be earning favor with Allah. That meant helping others before herself.
On Wednesday October 11th Eve found Lee upset, again his attention was on Virginia.
.
Lee: Their citizens' militia is allowing its members to elect their own officers.
Lee: That's bad?
Lee: Democracy doesn't work in the military. They'll just vote for the charismatic ones, or the ones reluctant to put them in harm's way, regardless of competance. In the army you need some who will make the hard choices, even when their soldiers hate them.
Eve: I feel bad for those guys, cut off from the rest of the collective.
Lee: We keep fighting each other like this, we'll be easy pickings for the loyalists.
Eve: Being a criminal, I have no chance of getting into an Ark.
Lee: This isn't just about us. I believe in the Collective States of America. In fighting for our brothers and sisters, even if I don't survive.
Eve: Yeah. I just would've liked some hope of surviving this.
Lee: There might be a way. We can show Santos what he's dealing with if he tries to go rogue. We help preserve the collective, maybe Douglas lets us in. If not, at least we tried.
Eve: I might be willing to help. But I won't hurt children, Amy, or anyone without good reason for hurting that individual.
Lee: Noone's asking you too. Let me talk to the Brotherhood, see if they might have work for you.
Eve: Thank you.
.
Eve decided not to tell anyone about Lee's offer. She wanted to keep Amy out of it, keep her girlfriend out of trouble. If the Brotherhood of the Wolf were really planning terrorism, she might tell Ranger Burkle, but Lee said they wouldn't hurt anyone. Most people today were informing on each other. Eve didn't want to do that anymore. She knew mr Sanchez was secretly calling his son. Eve didn't want to get an old man in trouble for talking to his only living family. She'd seen pictures of the Sanchez family, they'd been happy once, before 2/4. Miguel jr even looked oddly familiar, Eve just wasn't sure where she'd seen him before. For all she knew Lee was an informant, setting a trap for her. This was just one of the many dangers of the times they lived in.
