Chapter 193

.

Eve tried to push the thoughts out of her head, but it was no use. She'd helped get a man killed. Not for the first time, she feared not for the last time. And those things Burkle said to her, was it true? Was she just a parasite? Latching onto whatever helped her the most, doing whatever she had to do to survive? When Eve got home she washed her face, and looked at herself in the mirror. Her face was different than it looked only two years ago. Not just older, but harder, and tired. In a way, Eve barely recognized herself anymore. Today marked the half-way point between Febuary 4th and impact. That day had marked exactly 1262 days until impact, it was now 631 days. Eve couldn't imagine how much her face would change before then. As bad as the first half had been, she feared the second half would be even worse. A thought occurred to Eve this night. She'd had long hair during the mutiny at Park's site, getting a haircut hadn't been a priority since. But if the law looked for her maybe she shouldn't have such long, distinguishable hair. Eve took some scissors and began cutting it off.

Most people had trouble sleeping since 2/4, some had become addicted to sleeping pills. It helped to have someone sleeping next to you. But tonight, even with Amy by her side, she couldn't sleep. Amy seemed a bit worried about Eve's impromptu haircut, she tried to talk to her.

.

Eve: Do you think it's true, what Burkle said about me?

Amy: No. You're a good person.

Eve: How do you figure? I'm a murderer and a traitor.

Amy: You already paid for Karen's death. And we had to leave, after all Mason did. I've seen the good in you. When I was brougt to the oil site you risked your safety, just to tell me not to be scared. I see you give food to the homeless refugees. And the first day we met you helped me pick up my books, even though I was a total stranger. You're a good person Eve, and I'm proud to be your girlfriend.

.

On Tuesday October 31st Eve was sitting on the porch. She barely remembered that today was suppossed to be Halloween. Two years ago she'd volunteered at her highschool to take small children trick-or-treating. That had been a good excuse to still do this without seeming too old, even if she got no candy. How much she'd changed since then. On this day Selena showed up outside the house. Clearly this cat didn't know the kind of person Eve really was, or it wouldn't go near her. She gave the cat some milk and a little food. Miguel seemed to think more highly of this alley cat than of his unwelcome guests. At this point Eve couldn't blame Miguel

.

Eve: I'm sorry I got your friend killed. He was a better person than I am. If you're lucky, maybe you'll live long enough to see me executed.
