Chapter 195

.

Shortly after the election results Lee asked Eve to talk with him in private. They talked quietly, neither wanted to put Amy in unneccessary danger.

.

Lee: Remember what we said on our video?

Eve: Yeah, but the legislature hasn't voted yet.

Lee: They will, now that they have the support of the people. We need to make a pre-emptive strike. There are four assemblymen who have supported seccession very vocally.

Eve: So, we just kill them?

Lee: It's neccessary. I need your help. You know how to use a gun right?

Eve: If I have to.

Lee: You have to. I'll coordinate with the Brotherhood, figure out who eliminates who. We're counting on you Eve. The collective depends on us right now.

.

That night, while Lee slept, Eve told Amy what Lee had told her.

.

Eve: The Brotherhood wants me to kill someone.

Amy: Who?

Eve: I don't know who specifically. Someone from the Texas legislature. Lee said it's one of four who has been supporting the Republic of Texas.

Amy: I think I know who he's talking about. Are you going to do it?

Eve: I don't know. I do believe in what the Brotherhood stands for. But I don't know if I can kill someone like that.

Amy: The collective might be your best chance to survive.

Eve: I know. But I can barely live with what I did to Karen. She was just scared, latching unto my father because he made her feel safe. And I shot her. She was lying helpless on the floor, begging for help. And I put my hand over her face, and took her life. The person Lee wants me to kill, he probably has a wife, kids, maybe living parents, friends from church, old cub scout buddies. And I'm suppossed to take him away from all of them forever.

Amy: Whatever you decide, do it, don't do it, even becoming an informant again, I'll stand by you.

Eve: You don't know how much this means to me. I love you.

Amy: I love you too.

.

Eve went back to the farm on Wednesday November 8th. Her mind kept going back to her potential mission. The legislature was voting Friday, Lee said they'd strike before then. Which meant tonight, tomorrow night at the latest. What would the Brotherhood do to her for refusing. Maybe the Texas Rangers would protect Eve, would they also protect Amy. Was this even an option? After the assasinations, there would be a government crackdown. Lee would be suspected, so would Eve. Unless ofcourse Eve informed on them before then. Maybe Amy and Eve could escape to collective territory, another Brotherhood safehouse perhaps. That would require carrying out this mission. Eve knew she's have to make a decision very soon.

On Wednesday night Lee told Eve her target, Jason Atkins, and said it had to be done tomorrow night. Eve realized that nowing any more about the man would make it harder to kill him, but she researched him anyway. She found what she could about mr Atkins on the internet. 36 years old, married, two kids. A bunch of things on his politics Eve didn't neccessarily understand. Jason Atkins attended Texas A. M. on a football scholarship, like governor Santos. Although Santos was older they both belonged to the same fraternity. Atkins was a former prosecutor, elected to the state legislature in 2032, three months before 2/4, he barely had one month in office before all of this. He was also a member of his church's choir and his son's little league coach. This was the man that the Brotherhood wanted Eve to murder.
