Chapter 196

On Thursday morning Eve woke Amy up early. Eve hadn't slept much, but she'd made her decision, and needed to talk to her.

Eve: I'm not going to kill him.

Amy: Okay, what should we do?

Eve: I think Burkle can protect us.

Amy: I don't trust her. She wouldn't let you go to the hospital after the bombing.

Eve: She risked her life to save me.

Amy: Only because you were still useful.

Eve: Which I'll be if I helpsave Lee's targets.

Amy: I wish you wouldn't.

Eve: When this is over, at least one group will want us dead. I'm just trying to make sure it isn't both.

Amy: Yeah but, I'm with the Brotherhood. And I have a similar mission tonight.

Eve was shocked by what Amy said. Amy was again part of a radical group, and she hadn't bothered to tellher girlfriend.

Eve: I don't understand, why didn't you tell me.

Amy: The Brotherhood is on a need to know basis, in case of capture.

Eve: You were upset about me not telling you.

Amy: I'm sorry, but I wasn't sure you wouldn't tell the Rangers.

Eve: You think I would do that?

Amy: You were an informant, twice.

Eve: Does the Brotherhod know that?

Amy: Not from me they don't.

Eve: I thought we were past our trust issues.

Amy: I forgave you a long time ago, but I can't forget.

Eve: So, what do we do now?

Amy: The Rangers could protect you.

Eve: Protect us. You can probably negotiate immunity.

Amy: I can't do that. I believe in the collective, and I will do what I have to do to preserve it. But you have the right to protect yourself. Go to Burkle if you think she can help you, but I'll do what I have to do.

After Amy's revelation Eve knew that things had changed. Maybe this shouldn't matter. If the Brotherhood's actions constituted terrorism, than Eve had a duty to stop it, regardless of whether her girlfriend was involved. But Eve wasn't sure if she could really turn Amy in. This wasn't the first time Eve was torn in regards to Amy. She'd become Murphy's informant for the Sons of Liberty, and against her better judgement Eve fell in love with Amy. She'd ended up betraying both Amy and Murphy. It shouldn't have been a sprise when Amy said she still didn't completely trust her. Eve thought about what to do. Perhaps she could tell Burkle about Lee's plan, hope Amy wouldn't be implicated. Eve would be in danger. She figured she could handle dying, but not killing or getting Amy hurt. But now,it seemed she would have to choose. Eve didn't go to work on Thursday Novemer 9th. Instead she spent much of the day at her mosque. Eve gave the Shadah, fearing she wouldn't have time to do this later. 619 days until impact, and the odds of Eve survivng the next few days were small. When Amy arrived home Eve was waiting for her.

Amy: Have you changed your mind?

Eve: No. I'm not going to murder anyone.

Amy: Good for you. Are you going to tell Ranger Burkle?

Eve: Yes. And if you kill someone, I'll have to say you were involved. Or, you could come with me. We could leave together, call Burkle from the road. We can survive together, fleeing both the law and the Brotherhood. Or, you either go to prison, or do what you have to do to shut me up. Your choice.
