Chapter 201

.

As soon as Eve agreed to help the guards drove her to St Patrick's hospital. Eve asked about the plague, they either didn't know or weren't talking. It occurred to Eve that perhaps it was the beginning of civil war. It made sense, Mason might want to kill his enemies, without damaging the Arks. Another thought occurred the Eve. Maybe Caleb was right. Maybe God was punishing this sinful society. Dr Weber said that certain people had an unidentified gene that allowed them to develop anti-bodies. Maybe, or maybe Allah was killing some people, sparing others. But why kill Amy and spare Eve? Amy made mistakes, but she was fighting for a cause. Amy killed for her fellow rebels, Eve had murdered a woman in rage. Eve wanted to help save lives, perhaps become worthy of Allah's mercy.

By the time Eve got to St Patrick's hospital she saw that the hospital was itself completely covered in plastic. People were being brought here regularly. Eve soon learned that St Patrick's was now being used solely for quarantining this mystery virus. Upon entering this hospital something startled Eve. She had expected to see rooms covered in plastic. She'd expected priests and imams trying their best to comfort and help patients. Seeing people sick like this, feverish, vomiting, covered in sores, shaking, clearly in pain. This was hard to watch, but not unexpected. What Eve hadn't expected to see was so many children. Little children, even babies, screaming and dying in pain. Eve was overcome. She tried to run to the ladies room. Before she even made it Eve vomited on the floor, and all over her clothes and person.

Some people had noticed Eve vomiting, one nurse gave Eve some paper towels. Noone seemed suprised. Eve quickly got some cleaning supplies to clean up the mess. Then she went to the ladies room to change her clothes and clean herself up. Eve was deeply embarrassed, part of her didn't want to ever come out and face these people again. Eve couldn't get the image of those sick children out of her head, she probably never would. But those kids were still out there. Maybe Eve's help could provide some comfort to them, even save some perhaps. Eve didn't know if these people wanted her here, but she knew she was needed. That was more important.
