Chapter 204
.
Eve remembered Febuary 5th 2033, people selling rocks that would allegedly protect someone against ELE. The irony was how those sellers seemed to believe that money would mean something later. Eve here, in this hospital, people were selling little treats that they'd stolen from vending machines. Money seemed irrelevant when children were dying on such a regular basis. The doctors said children died from the virus because their bodies hadn't yet developed the immune systems that they needed. Some parents gave the hospital permission to euthanize their sick children. At least the mercy clinics had a minumum age of sixteen, fourteen with parental permission. Euthanizing children seemed like what Samuel had advocated. As Eve brought another body to the crematorium she saw someone already there, standig over another body. Eve recognized this guy, Alex, an orderly. Eve heard that Alex was involved in selling desserts and other contraband, sometimes for sex. Eve tried staying out of his business, until today. Today, Eve walked in on Alex looking through the corpse's pockets. He took some cash and placed it in his own pocket. This man was actually looting from the dead. Eve's temper got the better of her. She snuck up behind Alex and attacked him.
After the incident in the crematorium the guards brought Eve to dr Weber's office. She hadn't wated to hurt Alex for what he had done, she hadn't planned on him getting his hand burned like that, needing immediate medicl attention, it just happened in the heat of the moment. The question became, what would they do to Eve now? She couldn't leave here, but she'd just proven that she couldn't always behave. Would they simply put Eve down? Maybe they needed everyone they could get working here, although Eve hadn't even been here three weeks. It was Tuesday, November 28th, exactly 600 days until impact. Dr Weber soon arrived, Eve would soon learn her fate. At first Eve didn't question why she was being brought to a doctor's office after the incident with Alex. When the question came to her mind she realized that physical health might mean more than morality and/or justice these days.
.
Weber: We've been examinig your blood. Despite being surrounded by this illness for two weeks, you haven't caught it, nor will you be a carrier for it. Therefore, you're free to leave the hospital.
Eve: I can go, anytime I want?
Weber: Yes. You'll have to leave through the designated areas, merely a precaution, to keep the virus contained. I've also been instructed to remind you that the man you fought, he can still press charges against you. He's a scavenger, its your word agaist his. I'm willing to believe he attacked you when you caught him stealing. At any rate, the collective army is willing to forgive certain crimes, should you join up. They need all the healthy, immune individuals that they can get right now.
Eve: I don't have much else right now. Seems like as good an option as any. But I want to know what happenned to my girlfriend first.
Weber: Very well, I'll be straight with you. Amy was taken to St Bridgit's. They aren't examining healthy bodies like they are here. They're just treating the dying, euthanasia isn't even an option there. They need to know the symptoms of the terminally ill.
Eve: Why take us to different hospitals?
Weber: I think my superiors saw your profile. They wanted your cooperation, giving blood, helping the sick. They wanted you to believe Amy was their hostage to ensure your cooperation. I can arrange for you to see her, but I warn you, it won't be pretty.
