Chapter 205

.

As the guards brought Eve to see Amy, she wasn't sure what to expect. She knew what others had been through with this virus, fever, shaking, vomiting. Seeing people i such pain, she couldn't blame the doctors for euthanizing them. It pained Eve to imagine Amy in such pain. Surely Allah would forgive those who wanted to end such pain. St Bridgit's seemed more strict than St Patrick's. More guards, noone healthy outside Hazmat suits. They made Eve put one on, hopefully just a precaution. Doctors here didn't seem much concerned with comforting patients, just keeping them alive, studying them. They directed Eve to a patient. She was in pain, looked worse than Eve had ever seen her. But she would recognize this woman anywhere. It was Amy. Even through the Hazmat suit, and her fever, Amy and Eve still recogized each other. Eve tried to comfort her girlfriend. She didn't know the right words, but just beig here helped Amy. Amy tried telling Eve about her parents, they'd been infected in New Jersey. Before they died they were able to call Amy one last time. They said they'd been saved by Christ, they tried to get Amy saved before they died. Amy was torn. Acceptig Christ would mean she'd go to the same place as her parents. Becoming a muslim meant she'd go to the same place as Eve. Either one probably meant Amy and Eve could't be a couple aymore. At this point , Eve believed God would forgive Amy's sins, and accept her either way. But Eve also wanted to comfort Amy in the end. So Eve lied, said that she'd become christian since they'd last seen each other. Amy should become saved by Christ, than they'd all be together fairly soon. Amy said a prayer, that she was a sinner in need of forgiveness, and that she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. Eve still didn't understand what this meant, but it seemed to give Amy some comfort in the end. It was exactly 600 days until impact, but Eve would be pretty suprised if Amy lasted another six days.

Eve stayed with Amy until the very end. Amy tried to hold on, until she became too weak and tired. She died early Wednesday morning. Eve went with the orderlies to the crematorium. She had tried to say little prayers when she brought other bodies to St Patrick's. With Amy, Eve said a Shakespeare quote that Amy had liked. "Here no treason lurks, here no envy swells. Here grow no damned drugs, here there are no storms." The orderlies just threw Amy's body into the furnace as Eve was talking. She couldn't blame them, they were just doing their unpleasant job. They hadn't killed Amy, but Eve would find someone who had killed her. Not just Amy, but everyone who had been killed by the plague, particularly the children. Eve would make them pay.
