Chapter 206
.
After Amy's deat Eve wanted to immediately join the collective army. First she had to be examined before leaving St Bridgit's. They de-toxed Eve, took more of her blood. Then they gave Eve a serum to help her sleep while they tested her blood. When Eve woke up she briefly forgot where she was. Then Eve remembered, Amy was dead. This time did little to cool Eve down, she still wanted revenge. She would soon find an enlistment center to join the collective army. It was November 30th, 598 days until impact. Before Impact, Eve would make them pay for Amy's death. Once she was declared clean, and allowed to leave this quarantine zone, Eve didn't have much trouble getting a ride to the nearest enlistment center. Living amongst the plague, hatred of George Mason's government was rampant. Most wanted to fight back, they just couldn't leave. At the enlistment center itself were many people. They were motivated partly by patriotism, partly because most had nowhere else to go. They'd lost family, friends, lovers. Hatred and displacement became powerful motivators. Eve was also grateful that joining the collective army meant a clean slate. Very unlikely that they'd ever prosecute her for her part in the assemblywoman's murder or other things. There was even a rumor that enlisting meant forgiveness of all financial debts, public and private. This seemed like it could easily destroy the economy. But maybe president Douglas wasn't even pretending that this fledgling country would survive after impact. Eve found herself amongst other angry, displaced, desperate people. This was the new collective army. Eve had heard the expression "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." She thought it was just about politics and alliances. But it turned out that when a group of people hate and fear the same people, it can create a powerful bond between them. As soon as she signed the official papers, Eve felt she was part of the family.
