Chapter Ten
Chasity knew she wouldn't be able to do this. She couldn't raise this baby alone, but she also couldn't do any of the options available to her in this situation. Abortion was disturbingly disgusting, and adoption wasn't for her. She couldn't hand over her child; her flesh and blood, to strangers. She was in big trouble.
"I think I need more time to think about this." Chasity sighed. "I mean, you helped me a lot, but I'm still not positive this is what I want to do." Ms. Grant nodded her head.
"That's fine. You can take all the time you need. You have the agencies number, you can just give me a call if you should decide you want to start the proceedings." Chasity nodded and stood up along with Jon. She shook Ms. Grant's hand and led Jon out of the office and to the exit of the building.
Jon sat in the passenger's seat and watched Chasity stare out the windshield, completely lost in her thoughts. "Do you want me to drive," he questioned, breaking her out of her thoughts. She shook her head, clearing it. "Uhh, do you mind?" Jon shook his head.
"If I did, I wouldn't have asked." They climbed back out of the car and switched places. Buckling her seatbelt in the passenger's seat Chasity leaned her head back against the head rest.
"Thank you," she mumbled. Jon shrugged.
"It's not a problem." Jon cranked the engine and began to maneuver the car out of the parking lot. "Look, don't stress out about this too much. Everything will be just fine, no matter what decision you end up making." Chasity gave him a half smile.
"Glad someone thinks that because right now I'm not so sure."
The rest of the ride back to Chasity's was silent. Chasity was running through all her options and scenarios again in her head. She had no idea what she was going to do. She sighed and banged her head back against the car seat's head rest, hard, out of frustration. Jon glanced over at her, concern masking his face. "Hey, stop. Don't do that, you're gonna hurt yourself."
"I can't help it, I'm so fucking frustrated. I figured adoption would be easy when I eliminated abortion because of its disgusting nature, but boy was I wrong." Tears began to brim her eyes. "I've just had enough of all of this searching and I've pretty much run out of options at this point. I can't do abortion, adoption is looking less and less likely, but I also know there's no way I can be a single mother, either." Chasity shook her head vigorously. "I don't know what to do, Jon," she cried.
The car fell back to silence; an awkward silence. Jon wasn't sure what to tell her. He pulled into Chasity's apartment's parking lot and parked in her designated parking spot. Jon turned the car off and pulled the keys from the ignition and climbed from the car. Walking to Chasity's side, he opened her door, helped her out of the car and pulled her into a silent, comforting hug.
They broke the hug and walked toward Chasity's apartment. The silence continued to linger as Jon walked her up to her apartment. Still having the keys in his possession, Jon unlocked the door and walked in, placing her keys on the coffee table before he sat down on the sofa beside her. Squeezing her thigh just above her knee he decided he had to get her talking. "I know you're frustrated. I get that you feel like all your out of options, but you can't stress out about this. It's not good for you or the baby."
Chasity rested back against the back of the sofa contemplating what Jon said. He was right. She knew he was. Sighing, she squeezed her eyes shut trying to hold off the new batch of tears she could feel brimming her eyes again. She failed. Covering her face with her hands to shield Jon from seeing the tears that began pouring down her face because she was sure it would only make him think she was weak; even though he'd seen her cry in the car a few minutes earlier.
Jon pulled her hands away from her face. "Hey, come on, none of that," he exclaimed. "You know how much I hate it when you cry. Come on, dry the tears." Chasity used her sleeve to attempt to dry her face as she looked over at Jon.
"I'm sorry, I'm just so fucking torn, and it's got my frustration level at its breaking point. I don't know what else to do. Crying seems like my only option. I know it won't solve a damn thing, but I'm at my wits end," She cried. She couldn't sit there anymore. Sitting was beginning to drive her nuts. Standing up she began to pace. "I can't be a single mom, Jon. I'm barely getting by on my own, there's no way in hell I can keep myself and a baby a float. I don't even have a job."
As she went to pace past Jon he grabbed her hand, effectively stopping her from pacing. Pulling her toward him he forced her to sit on the coffee table directly in front of him. "You won't be doing this alone. I already told you I'm gonna help you financially until you're back on your feet. If that's not until after the baby is born, then so be it." He paused and squeezed her hand before continuing. "I'll also help keep you in check emotionally. I'm not letting you go through this alone, I'll help you every step of the way." Chasity's eyes grew wide as she shook her head.
"No, Jon. I can't ask, or expect, for you to do that." Jon sighed and shook his head again.
"What have I told you? You didn't ask; nor did I think you expected it. I'm doing this because I want to. If I didn't, I'd have split by now, you should know by now I don't do anything I don't want to do."
Chasity knew he was right. Jon never did anything he didn't want to. She thought he would've split when he figured out she was pregnant. When he didn't, she was sure finding out she had no idea who the baby's father was would send him running for the hills. But once again he had proven her wrong by stepping into a role he didn't have to. "I have no idea how to thank you. You've done so much in twenty-four hours then I could've ever imagined any guy doing for anyone, ever." Jon shrugged his shoulders and shook his head.
"No need to thank me because I already told you I want to do this. Your best 'thank you' would be to let me do this and stop stressing out over things you have no control over." Chasity smiled and nodded.
"Okay. I can't promise I'll mellow out completely, but I can promise to try." Jon nodded.
"Alright, that's good enough for me. Well, at least, for the time being."
