Chapter 221

.

The soldier walked Eve out at gunpoint. She didn't know if there was a firing squad waiting for her, or if he was expected to do it himself. Either way, Hamilton wouldn't want his men to see comrades shooting other comrades. He took Eve into the woods. When they were alone, he told her to stop, he had to relieve himself. This greatly annoyed Eve. Wasn't this scary enough without having to wait around for her own execution? This guy sure was taking his own sweet time. Then a though occurred to her. Maybe he wanted Eve to run, she didn't know why. Perhaps Hamilton decided it was better to have dessertions than to have his soldiers shooting each other. Maybe this guy was breaking orders rather than kill his comrade. Or perhaps amilton would find it easier to explain shooting her for trying to escape, than to explain to Los Angelas why he was shooting his own soldiers. Whatever his reason this soldier was deliberately looking the other way. Eve's only chance to survive was to run. Escaping would mean a difficult life, but her survival instincts told her to flee. Eve quickly ran away. He yelled for her to stop, but Eve knew he didn't actually expect Eve to come back. Eve heard gunshots, not sure how close they were. She just kept on running, had to keep moving, there was no going back.

Eve got away from the farm. She hadn't heard anyone coming for her, that was good. It was one of the few things Eve had going for her right now. She was a fugitive from two countries, no allies to speak of. It was a cold winter night, with no shelter around. She had no food, no weapons, and she wasn't even sure where she was exactly. Eve heard thuder in the distance. It was too dark to tell if there were rain clouds. Rain might mean she'd freeze to death. But if she couldn't find a river or something, no rain meant death from dehydration. Eve didn't know which death was preferable, but that decision would likely be made for her.
