Chapter 223

Eve couldn't believe her eyes. Here he was stading before her. Adam, Eve's oldest friend, the first boy she ever kissed. Eve wanted to run up to Adam, to have him hold her, tell her everything would be okay. But then she remembered, he was wearing the uniform of her enemy, and he was holding a rifle on Eve. Adam seemed just as suprised and unsure as Eve. Finally Adam walked up to Eve, and hugged her. For the briefest of moments, all was forgotten. It didn't matter what uniforms they were wearing, or what either of them had done. Adam and Eve were just two old friends comforting each other. But, as often happens, real life intruded upon their reunion, and they remembered that they were suppossed to be enemies.

As Eve hugged Adam she heard voices. Adam quickly told her to hide behind a nearby tree stump. Eve crouched under this, hoping noone saw her, tried not to make a sound. Adam had clearly fallen into his old role as her protector, despite their oppossing sides. Eve soon heard voices, tried to remain calm. The others asked Adam if he anyone. It seemed they'd found evidence that someone had set up camp near here very recently. Adam lied and said he hadn't seen anyone. He then told them to cover the area, he'd continue looking for evidence around here. These others responded "Yes sir." Eve was suprised, did they really just call Adam "Sir?" More suprising was when Eve heard a female voice say "Love you Adam." Adam responded "I love you too Claire." Much had happenned these last two years, and Eve had a lot of questions. After his frieds were gone Adam told Eve she could come out, but he kept his rifle on Eve.

Eve: Did they really just call you "sir?"

Adam: Yeah. I'm a sargent, they're privates. So, I'm more or less their superior.

Eve: Including Claire?

Adam: Yeah, she's my mate now.

Eve: I'm glad for you.

Adam: Is there any chance you stole that uniform?

Eve: No. I'm a private in the collective army.

Eve bega telling her story, how she'd been involved in the black market, the Sons of Liberty, murdered Karen, sent to Park's forced labor camp, escaped, joined the collective army, and recently desserted. Adam then told his story, some of which Eve already knew. After what he did, Adamspent four months working on an Ark. After his sentance Adam decided to stay and keep workig on an Ark, earn more lottery chances. Later Adam worked the coal mines of West Virginia, gathering fuel for the Arks. After seccessio Adam joined the United States Army, eventually sent to Endor Texas with others to provide military assistance to the loyalist town with plenty of crops. While working on the Ark Adam met Claire, who was two years older than him. He confessed what he'd once done to Eve, Claire accepted him even with his past sins. They stayed together through the Ark building, coal mining, even in the army. It seemed hard to believe that these two old friends had ended up on opposite sides of World War III. But it had happenned. Had they remained together, perhaps they would've been on the same side, whichever side that might be. But for now they were enemies. And the question remained, what were they suppossed to do?
