Chapter 225
.
Eve wasn't sure what Adam would do with her. He had hurt a guy for insulting her, later gotten into a scuffle with someone in the supermarket for stealing from her, later he'd given her a black eye. He'd kept her hidden from his comrade, probably saved her life. But would he now shoot her as his enemy, rather than risk her shooting his fellow eagles?
.
Adam: There's a coal mine near here. My army has been using collective P.O.W.s as laborers. If you go there and turn yourself in they have to take you in.
Eve: Well, I'm a desserter. That place might be my best chance to survive longer.
Adam: Good. I'll draw you a map, let you go, if you give me your word that you'll go to this camp.
Eve: You have my word. Thank you Adam.
Adam: I could never turn my back on you, not completely.
.
Adam drew a map for Eve to follow. This P.O.W. camp was roughly five miles from here. Adam also gave Eve a bottle of water for the trip. He would have to return to his unit now, Eve was on her own. She would have to avoid loyalist soldiers who would shoot her as the enemy, and collectivist soldiers who would shoot her for dessertion. Before Eve left, she took one last look at Adam. They both knew they would probably never see each other again. If they did, they might not be able to avoid this. So before she went away forever, Eve kissed Adam one last time.
