~~~ "I'm Never Alone, I'm Alone All the Time" ~~~
* Chapter Fifty-One*
Haley's body froze in place and all she could do was stare back in disbelief. She couldn't believe she was staring directly into the eyes of the root of her husband's pain. Dan Scott in the flesh. Her mouth dropped open and she'd lost the ability to speak altogether. For months she'd play back in her mind what she would say to him if ever given the opportunity. Speak her mind about what he'd done to her and for all he put Nathan through his entire life. Now presented with the chance, Haley remained speechless.
Dan stood tall and made sure he was in a towering stance over Haley from the moment she opened the door. He wanted her to feel his power and to feel intimidated from the moment the door opened. Dan had done his research to prepare for his visit and knew Haley would be home alone upon his arrival. He had timed his arrival just perfectly. Dan felt his body temperature rise with excitement as he saw the mixture of emotions come over Haley. He peered closely at her as he witnessed the emotions play across her face. It began with shock and then moved to uncertainty…anger but stalled on fear. Fear was the card that Dan Scott would play. This only motivated him further as this represented the power and control he possessed.
"Haley James…Oh I mean Scott right? It's a pleasure to see you are home tonight…in my son's house. Are you going to keep your father-in-law out on your door step all night?" Dan questioned his voice dripping with distain.
When she said nothing in response Dan spoke again, "Well are you?"
Dan waited another second or two before he pushed past her and walked right into the house. He made sure to come in physical contact with her body as he passed by. The moment his body touched hers it was as if she had finally woken from the state of disbelief she'd been in. Physical contact with the devil himself had shaken her to the core.
Haley turned around and finally spoke, "What do you think you're doing Dan? You need to leave right now!"
Dan had made it all the way to the bar area near the living room where he'd promptly reached to make himself a drink. Scotch of course was always his drink of choice. He'd had two drinks at home before he got into his car to make the drive over. He kept his back to her and snickered when she called to him again.
"Excuse me, what are you doing?"
Dan turned around as he brought the glass to his lips and slowly took in the burning liquid. He gulped it down in only two swallows and then took in the sight before him. Haley was standing barefoot in a summer dress that hugged her body like a glove. He looked her up and down and noted just how petite she really was. He couldn't deny that Nathan had found a woman who was indeed beautiful and not just a pretty face with make up on. Haley James Scott was a classic beauty and definitely easy on the eyes. The beautiful face glaring back at him did not look happy in the least.
Dan hadn't expected to be affected by her presence the way he was. For a second, he felt a shift inside when he eventually settled on her eyes. There was a clear look of anger and terror looking back at him. Another drink would keep his focus on his original intent. He went back to the bottle of scotch and filled his glass nearly to the top again before he threw it back like it was water.
Haley finally moved from the front door and pushed it lightly with the intent to leave the front door still cracked. She called back at him however didn't hear the door click shut over her own voice.
"You need to leave right now Dan! You aren't welcome here. Get out of my house!" Haley snapped loudly as she walked closer towards where Dan had been standing. Dan laughed out loud as he looked around taking in his surroundings.
"Your house? Listen little girl….this is my son's house not yours. I think I'll wait over here until he gets home. He is coming home tonight from his road trip right? His flight should put him home very soon in fact." Dan announced glaring back at her as he gestured towards the living room for a place to sit.
"Dan, get out of here right now because I'll call the security at the gate to remove you themselves!" Haley warned.
Dan didn't miss her eyes that darted back over to the front door and then to the alarm panel on the wall.
"Go ahead and call them if you like. No one on the other end will help you. I've generously compensated the gate security to allow us some privacy to bond as a family. You wouldn't believe how convincing I can be when I need to be." Dan remarked with a sneer.
Haley couldn't believe what was happening and suddenly felt sheer panic set in. Dan downed another drink before he spoke again.
"A little extra cash has bought me precious time with my daughter-in-law." Dan spoke as he took a few steps towards where Haley had been standing near the entry way.
"Why don't you be a good whore…...Oh I mean wife to my son and be welcoming to me?" He spoke as he held his stare with Haley only to peer down at her with disgust. His attention was shaken when he heard a loud, rapid barking from the back of the house. Dan and Haley both turned their heads simultaneously and saw the chocolate lab jumping up and down as he barked. Haley could tell from the pitch of the bark and how Brutus' hair on his back was standing up like a mow hawk that the dog was on attack. She was silently cursing herself that she'd shut the back door earlier instead of leaving it open like she usually did.
Dan chuckled at the sight and then said, "Of course there is a dog now! You sure are working hard at playing house with my son. You must be good to have him this fooled and whipped!"
"Dan get out of here I mean it!" Haley snapped back loudly to make sure he heard him over the now constant barking sound in the background.
Nathan couldn't have been happier when the wheels of the team's airplane finally touched the ground. He had been watching the minutes tick by one by one as the plane descended until it finally landed. He bounded off the plane as fast as he could with one thing in mind. Walking in the front door of their home and having his wife in his arms was all he could think about. He composed a quick text message and hit send to Haley with a smile. He got off the plane and moments later he was seated in his car ready to take off towards home.
The beeping and vibrating sound that came from Haley's phone on the counter got both of their attentions. Haley moved to retrieve her phone knowing exactly what the notification was. She could feel it in her gut that it was Nathan. She'd been anticipating his "I've landed and am on my way home" text message to come through.
"Don't even think about answering that." Dan warned as Haley touched her phone.
Haley froze in fear from the harsh tone of voice he used that was different than the manner he'd been speaking to her thus far.
"We are not to be interrupted because we've got too much ground to cover in a short amount of time." He continued as he took a step towards her.
Haley's eyes locked with Dan's and she tried her best to muster up any remaining courage left within her body. They remained locked in a heated stare down for a few seconds before she finally moved again. Haley grabbed her phone and swiped to unlock her phone quickly.
"Did you not hear me? You really are a dumb bitch aren't you, put it down I'm warning you." He bellowed as he balled his fist up next to his sides.
Haley tapped her text messages and indeed glanced to confirm it was from Nathan. She saw Dan begin to move closer to here and couldn't help but see the fists at his side. She was now down right terrified having him closer to her. She worked as fast as she could to try and bring up the call option on her phone knowing she truly only had one shot. One shot to get a call out to Nathan. She tapped her screen again quickly and was forced to look away before she was able to confirm it went through to Nathan. She took a deep breath and held it for a moment praying it worked. Haley couldn't hear anything ringing before Dan yelled once more.
"I thought musicians were supposed to have a good ear but you certainly don't seem to fit that mold. Yet another reason why you are a complete waste of my son's time, money and attention. Now be a good little whore and put it down if you know what's good for you. I think you already know I'm not a man to mess with." Dan warned once more.
Nathan tapped along on the steering wheel as he drove down the freeway pleasantly surprised the find traffic was flowing freely. He found himself smiling to himself like a love sick puppy at the idea he would see his sexy wife soon. Excitement increased as over the speakers his phone started to ring. He glanced at the screen and quickly tapped the answer button on his steering wheel.
"Hi Hales. I should be home in about 15 minutes." Nathan said with a grin as he waited to her angelic voice to fill his ears.
Silence.
"Hales..can you hear me?"
Nathan turned the volume up on the wheel as he waited for her voice to through.
"I heard what you said ok." Said Haley in a shaky voice.
"Put it down right now!" Nathan heard over a voice over the speakers. His eyes widened at the sound. Could it be right? He looked at the screen again and saw Haley's contact name on the screen.
"Hales!" Nathan called out again.
Another moment passed before the voice spoke again, "Hand it over little girl. I'm not playing anymore games tonight!"
Nathan's mouth dropped open and panic set in. What was Dan Scott doing with Haley?
"Fine Dan I'll just set it back down on the counter. Just relax." Haley said and moved her arm to put her phone on the counter. She could tell Dan was a ticking time bomb but the question remained where and when he would explode.
Everything changed in an instant when Dan suddenly moved and closed the gap between them. He reached out and grabbed Haley's wrist hard.
"Do not think for one second I'm going to let some slut tell me what to do! You may be able to get my son to do as you say but that won't work on me. Now give me the fucking phone!" Dan screamed as he tightened his hold on her wrist.
"Let go of me Dan! Stop it that hurts!" Haley cried out instantly in pain. Her cries only made him tighten his grip on her.
"Ahh stop!" She cried again as she tried to pull away from his grasp.
A muffled struggle could be heard over the phone and then Nathan could hear his father's laughter. There was a constant sound of a dog barking in the background as well making it difficult to hear what was going on.
"You're a feisty skanky aren't you….got some fight in you too! That's kind of a turn on I have to admit." Dan said as he finally ripped the phone from her hand. He looked down at the screen and was greeted with surprise. That little bitch had called Nathan.
"Haley…. oh my God! Talk to me…stay on the line. I'm coming to you right now. Baby I'm coming you hear me! I promise I'm coming!"
Dan glared at Haley as they both heard confirmation Nathan was indeed on the other end of the phone.
"You called him! You are so pathetic! I come here to offer well wishes to you and this is what you do." Dan screamed in her face.
"Get away from me Dan!" Haley called out in fear. Dan looked down at the phone in his grasp as rage continued to fill his body.
Nathan pressed the pedal to the floor as he sped down the road as he heard his wife screaming in the background. He wanted to hang up and call the police but he couldn't bear the thought of her being alone with Dan. Faster. He had to get to Haley fast…before it was too late. If he knew one thing, Dan Scott was unpredictable. The thought of Haley coming to harm again at the hands of Dan…he couldn't live with himself if it happened. Again.
"Dan!" Nathan called out as he weaved in and out of traffic while he drove. "If you hurt her I swear to God I will kill you! Dan do you hear me? I'll kill you!"
Dan heard his son's threats over the phone which only fueled him more. He glanced at the phone once more before he spoke, "My son has and will always be weak." Haley took advantage of Dan's moment of distraction and managed to pull herself from his grasp. She pushed off his arm in disgust wanting nothing more to get away from him. She took a few steps backwards and it was only then she realized how truly shaky her legs had become. The thought Nathan was coming was the only thing that brought her a shred of comfort through the fear that was suffocating her. She couldn't remember a time when she'd been so scared.
"Nathan help me…please hurry!" Haley screamed out.
The wind was sucked from Nathan's lungs when he heard his wife call out for him. He couldn't do a damn thing to protect her from the monster otherwise known as his father.
Dan Scott had had enough. In one swift movement, Dan chucked the phone against the nearest wall and felt a sense of satisfaction when it crashed against it. He looked over at the phone and saw the screen was no longer lit. Success. Haley flinched at the noise of the only connection to Nathan or her means for help destroyed. She was now officially alone with Dan.
"Haley….Haley are you there? Helloo! Nathan called out as he swerved towards the ramp to exit the freeway.
It was then he heard the sound that caused his stomach and heart to drop. Dial tone. Nathan ran right through a stop sign as he drove towards home as fast as possible. Praying he wouldn't be too late.
Dan turned to look back at Haley who was visibly more upset. She had tried her best to keep the tears at bay. He took a step towards Haley as he opened his mouth to speak again.
"Well, now that's much better right? No more interruptions for us." Dan sneered.
Haley stared back at him desperately trying to wrap her mind around what could have possibly brought him to their home or what he wanted in the first place. Knowing it was absolutely pointless to try and get inside the mind of a lunatic, she gave up.
"What are you doing here Dan? You know you aren't welcome here and I think it's time you go ok. You've had your satisfaction and scared me. You can leave now." Haley reasoned not really sure if what she was doing was smart or not.
"Satisfaction? You think I'm satisfied with the current situation? You are such a fucking idiot!" Dan spat back at her remark without missing a beat. He was becoming more angry which forced him to step closer towards her.
Haley put her hand up immediately in an effort to force him to stop and said, "Stop right there! Do not come near me Dan."
Dan laughed again and fired back, "I am nowhere near satisfied with things. Nathan firing me was all because of you. If you hadn't come into his life, I would still have my son in my life. I would have a job and everything would be back to normal. But no…because of some little bitch I have nothing."
She watched in fear as Dan began to walk swiftly towards her again. Haley took a step back and continued until she felt herself hit the wall. She had nowhere to go once he got in front of her and before she knew what to do Dan pushed her against the wall and held her up by her shoulders. The second she cried out in pain he shoved her harder into the wall causing her head to bang against the wall.
"The only solution to this problem I can see is if I get rid of you once and for all." Dan spoke making sure he looked her directly in the eyes.
Haley couldn't contain the tears any longer and they spilled down her cheeks.
"Dan please stop!" She cried as he tightened his hands on her shoulders.
Nathan managed somehow to dial 911 while he continued to drive towards home.
"911 what's your emergency?"
"Yes, I need a police officer at my house right away. My wife is home alone with my father who is dangerous. I live it 2786 La Jolla Drive." Nathan rushed out in a panic.
"Does the man have a weapon?" the operator questioned.
"Uhh I don't know if he has a weapon but my wife is in danger. You've gotta send someone right away please! I'm driving there myself right now and almost there." He answered back. He took the corner at nearly 45 MPH and felt a sense of relief when he saw the gate to his community at the end of the road.
"Sir, you need to wait for the police officer to arrive. I have two officers on their way to your house. Please do not enter the home. Sir stay on the line with me until they arrive." the operator instructed.
"What? No, I can't do that! My wife is in there and in danger! You don't know what he's capable of!" Nathan yelled back.
"Sir, please calm down and let the authorities handle this if he is dangerous. Sir, you need to wait outside for them to arrive."
Nathan screeched the brakes as he turned into the open gate for his community.
"Like hell I'll wait outside." Nathan replied and then hung up the phone.
He saw Dan's car parked two house down from his and rage ignited within his soul. The tires to his car squeal as he slammed it into park when he pulled into driveway. He threw the car door open and took off on a dead run towards the front door not bothering to close the car door behind him. He could hear the growling and barking of Brutus from the backyard which only made him run faster. Something was clearly wrong.
Nathan burst through the front door praying he wasn't too late.
