Chapter Forty Five

"All five said…" she trailed off and glanced back down at the tests lying in front of her. "Actually, come look at them yourself. After all, seeing is believing, right," she said, holding one of the tests out toward Jon.

Jon walked over to Chasity and took the test out of her out stretched hand, but he kept his eyes locked with hers. He was nervous about looking at the results. Part of him wanted to see a positive result, but the other part; the more rational part, said right now was not the time for them to have another baby. If she was pregnant, that meant Kaleb would only be about eleven months old when the new baby was born. That means two kids who can't talk, are still drinking from bottles and aren't potty trained yet. That's just insane! However; on the other hand, he knew if anyone could handle this specific task it would be them.

Finally breaking eye contact with Chasity, Jon looked down at the stick he held in his hand. Two pink lines. Given he had never looked at the box for instructions, and he wasn't there when Chasity found out she was pregnant with Kaleb, he had no idea whether two lines meant positive or negative. "Umm, not to sound like an idiot, but I just remembered I have no idea how to read a pregnancy test. What does this mean? I mean, I never read the instructions on the box, and as much as I hate to be reminded, I also wasn't there when you found out you were pregnant with Kaleb, so I have no idea what positive vs negative on these tests is," Jon admitted to her. Chasity chuckled and handed him one of the pregnancy test boxes that was lying beside her on the bed.

"I'm not telling you. Somethings you have to figure out on your own, this is one of them. So here, read the box," she told him. He took the box with his empty hand and quickly read the instructions.

"I really didn't need to know how these tests are taken, thanks," Jon mumbled as he finally got past the 'how to take' instructions and reached 'how to read the results' instructions. "Two lines means positive, one line means negative." Jon swallowed hard and looked back up at Chasity. "So I guess we're going to be parents again," Jon said. "Are you ready for this," he asked. Chasity shrugged.

"I'm not so sure the whole thing has actually hit me quite yet," she admitted. "What about you?"

"I'm not sure yet, either. But I do know that if there's anybody that can tackle this like a pro, it's us." Chasity smiled and nodded.

"Yeah, we'll conquer this like we've conquered every other obstacle we've had in our way our entire lives."

*One Week Later*

The week had been interesting to say the least. Between taking care of Kaleb and "morning sickness" that didn't end when morning did, but instead lasted all day, Chasity had her work cut out for her. Luckily, while Jon was home on Wednesday and Thursday, he took over "Kaleb Duty"; as they had taken to calling it, while Chasity dealt with her morning sickness. It was a nice break until Jon had to leave for the airport on Thursday night. If there was one thing Chasity would never recommend to anyone it was getting pregnant right after having a child. If there was a hell on earth, the morning sickness she was experiencing had to be it.

It was now Wednesday morning again and Jon was due home any minute. Today was their first doctor's appointment. They would find out exactly how far along she is and probably get to hear the baby's heartbeat, which Chasity couldn't wait for. While this baby was a complete surprise, and not something either of them was expecting right now, neither of them were going to shun the pregnancy. She was going to do her best to enjoy every second of it; well, except the being sick part. That part she could have definitely done without.

Jon knew he was running later than he wanted. His plane had gotten delayed and as a result, he didn't land until later than expected. So now he needed to rush home, throw his suitcase and backpack into their bedroom, gather up Kaleb and Chasity and head for Chasity's doctor's appointment. Not exactly the way he had it planned, but it would have to work for today. So that's exactly what he did. He walked through the door, threw his suitcase and backpack into the bedroom, gathered up Kaleb's diaper bag and car seat, and took Chasity's hand as they left the apartment in route to the doctor's office.

Luckily for them the doctor was also running a little behind schedule, so they wound up being on time, but had to sit in the waiting room and wait for Doctor Mitchel to finish with her previous patient. While they were waiting for someone to call them back Jon sat with Kaleb lying flat against his lap as he played a silly game of peek-a-boo with him, which had Kaleb giggling up a storm. If there was one sound Chasity would never get tired of hearing, it was her son's giggle; especially when he was giggling at his father's antics.

"Chasity, Doctor Mitchel is ready for you," a nurse smiled at her. Chasity smiled back and stood up. Jon placed Kaleb back into his car seat, strapped him in and popped his pacifier into his mouth before picking him up and following Chasity back to the examination room. "You can place your things on the exam table and I'll quickly weigh you and take your blood pressure and then Doctor Mitchel will be in to complete the rest of your exam," the nurse said as Chasity did as she was told.

Once she was weighed and the nurse had taken her blood pressure, Chasity sat on the table and waited for Doctor Mitchel to come in. "So what exactly does today's appointment consist of," Jon questioned.

"She'll do a pelvic exam; which you don't have to stay in the room for if you don't want to, you can take Kaleb out to the waiting room for that and someone will come get you for the rest of the appointment. She'll also give me my due date as well as allow us to listen to the baby's heart beat," she informed him just as Doctor Mitchel came into the room.

"Well, I see you just couldn't wait to expand your family," Doctor Mitchel joked as she came into the room. Chasity nodded her head and shrugged.

"Apparently not. I guess you could say we were over eager. We figured Kaleb is such a good baby, why wait," Chasity joked back causing Doctor Mitchel to laugh.

"Well, today's appointment will consist of your pelvic exam," Doctor Mitchel began to inform them as she set up the stirrups at the end of the exam table and motioned for Chasity to put her legs up in each one. "Then I'll quickly measure your stomach to see how far along you are as well as give you a due date, then to complete the appointment I will let you hear the baby's heart beat," she said. "I think it's still too early for an ultrasound, but I won't know for sure until I see exactly how far along you are," she admitted before turning her attention to Jon. "Now Jon, if you would like to step outside during the pelvic exam, go ahead. I will surely let you know when it's over and you can come back in." Jon looked at Chasity.

"I'll leave it up to you. Do you want me to leave, or would you rather I stay,
he asked. "You know I'm not shy," he joked. Chasity chuckled and shrugged.

"I don't care either way, if you want to stay you can." Jon nodded.

"Then I'll stay. I mean, at this point, there's not much I haven't seen when it comes to you. After all, I was in the room when you gave birth to Kaleb and we've slept together on more than one occasion both recently; obviously, and back in high school, so what's the point in me leaving," Jon pointed out. Doctor Mitchel nodded.

"Some fathers just aren't comfortable staying for the pelvic exam, so we always give them the option to leave the room if they want to," Doctor Mitchel smiled. Jon nodded.

"I understand and I appreciate the offer, but I'm good," he thanked her.

After the pelvic exam was complete Doctor Mitchel pulled out her measuring tape. "Okay Chasity, go ahead and pull your shirt up," she instructed her. Chasity pulled her legs out of the stirrups and sat up to raise her shirt. She loved this part of the appointment. Just seeing how big the baby was and listening to the heartbeat, or seeing the baby was her favorite part of every appointment. She laid back once she had her shirt far enough up and reached for Jon's hand. Doctor Mitchel used the tape measure to measure her still-flat tummy. "So right now it looks like you're measuring at about thirteen weeks or 3 months and one week, but given this is your second baby and you had your first child just over four months ago, and I know I didn't clear you that early, I'm going to guess your uterus is still stretched and a little swollen from your pregnancy with Kaleb, so you're actually measuring further along than you actually are," she informed them. "And no, there isn't any reason to worry, this is totally normal," Doctor Mitchel quickly added so the new parents didn't start freaking out. "Given all that info, I'm going to wait until your next appointment to give you your due date. By then, I think we'll be able to do your first ultrasound, and that will give us a better idea of exactly how far along you are and I'll be able to get you an accurate due date. And I think we'll be able to do that at your next visit, but for now we'll listen to the baby's heart," she said pulling the Doppler device and gel they used to listen to the baby's heartbeat.

Chasity giggled as the cold gel hit the skin of her stomach. "Sorry, it's cold," she said. Doctor Mitchel laughed as she put the Doppler against Chasity's stomach. Nothing happened at first, and Chasity got a little nervous. "Why isn't there any noise," she questioned. Doctor Mitchel just smiled reassuringly.

"Give it a moment," she said as she pressed the device a little more firmly against Chasity's stomach. After another couple of seconds the 'wooshing' noise that signified the baby's heartbeat took over the room. "There we go. See, just had to disturb them a little bit and get the device in the correct spot. No worries," Doctor Mitchel smiled as she moved the Doppler around Chasity's skin.

"Wow, that's kind of cool," Jon mumbled as he focused on the sound of his unborn child's heartbeat as Chasity glanced at him with a small smile. "I mean, I know we heard Kaleb's heart this way not that long ago, but you have to admit, that sound is neat," he said. Chasity nodded.

Doctor Mitchel continued to move the device around on Chasity's skin lightly when the 'wooshing' noise suddenly sounded weird. "Why does it sound like the baby's heart is double beating," Chasity asked, concern mired in her voice as she and Jon eyed Doctor Mitchel whose eyes went wide as she gave a nervous chuckle.

"Well, would you look at that," she mumbled as she moved the device a little more to make sure they weren't hearing things before pulling it away. "Hold on, I'll be right back," she told them as she left the room.

"What's going on, and where did she go," Jon asked. Chasity shook her head.

"I'm not sure, Jon, but she didn't sound concerned. Surprised, but not concerned. Let's just wait until she comes back in," Chasity said, squeezing Jon's hand.

They both sat silently until Doctor Mitchel walked back into the room followed by an ultrasound tech and an ultrasound machine. "I was going to wait until your next visit to do an ultra sound, as I told you earlier, but I want to confirm this, so I can tell you for sure. I don't want to tell you anything until I'm positive," she told them, but still didn't sound concerned. "Unfortunately, Chasity, I'm gonna have to ask you to put your feet back up in the stirrups because we have to do the ultrasound internally. I can also promise you what is going on is nothing bad, so you don't have to worry about that," Doctor Mitchel informed them to ease their minds a little as Chasity lifted her legs back into the stirrups. Doctor Mitchel stepped next to the ultrasound tech who quickly fired up the ultrasound machine and placed a condom over top of the tip of the ultrasound wand.

"What's that for," Jon questioned as the ultrasound tech handed the wand over to Doctor Mitchel.

"We can't do the ultrasound the normal way; the baby isn't quite big enough, so we have to do it internally," Doctor Mitchel told him. "We use the condom to prevent the spread of any diseases this device may be used for because it's used for more things than just early ultrasounds in pregnancy," Doctor Mitchel said. "Now, this will be a bit uncomfortable, Chasity, so just bear with me," Doctor Mitchel told her, turning her attention to Chasity. Chasity hissed and squeezed Jon's hand tighter as Doctor Mitchel eased the ultrasound wand into her. "Sorry, I know this is not the best thing that's why I try to avoid it, but it was necessary for me to give you accurate results today," Doctor Mitchel said.

A few minutes after the wand was securely inserted inside Chasity, Doctor Mitchel nodded. "Okay, so it is as I suspected. The reason you were measuring thirteen weeks instead of eight; which from looking at the ultrasound I can tell you, you are indeed eight weeks, and the reason it sounded like the baby had a double heartbeat is because there's actually two babies, not just one. So congrats, you're having twins," Doctor Mitchel informed them as she pressed a button on the ultrasound machine before slowly easing the ultrasound wand out of Chasity who never felt a thing after the news she just heard.

"T…Twins," Jon and Chasity croaked at the same time. Doctor Mitchel nodded as she turned the screen toward them and started pointing at the screen.

"This is baby A right here, and baby B is over here. They still look like tiny little peanuts right now, but there is most definitely two of them," the doctor informed them.

They were both happy Kaleb had fallen asleep after Jon had placed him back into his car seat because right now both were consumed by shock. They knew they could handle two babies under the age of two, but three babies under the age of two? How in the hell were they going to manage that?

Author's Note: Yup, twins. Hey, I had to throw something big at them. I wouldn't be me if I didn't. Haha. And yes, this is the final official chapter of this one, but have no fear you will find out exactly what happens with them. I'm not going to leave you hanging, I promise. No, as of now there is no sequel planned. I may do one in the future, but I'm not making any promises and I don't currently have one planned which makes me feel best for right now. However, I will be writing and epilogue, so you can look out for that to see exactly how this one ends. :)
