Chapter 250

.

On Thursday July 5th Eve was walking to Wilkins' home for her shift. She saw quite a few sector guards here today. Normally there weren't more than two, maybe six on election night for security. Today, there were at least a dozen, Eve soon learned why. They were investigating the murder of one of their own. To her shock Eve saw the body of her attempted suitor, Brian. Someone not only shot Brian, they threw him unto the porch of this councilman's home. They even pinned a note to the corpse. It read simply "A good collaborator."

After Brian's murder things happenned much as Eve expected. Sector guards questioned her and others. Eve gave what intel she had. By the end of the day loyalist soldiers entered the sector, conducted a raid on the safehouse of a suspected radical group. Eve had no idea if this particular group was responsible for Brian's death. Radical groups within the sector were small, disorgnized, would pull stunts like this and accept their own deaths. Within a few days the surviving members of this group were tried and executed. Power went on and off at times during these days. Tempers flared in heat, especially when air-conditioning kept going off. Some speculated that the sector guards were punishing everyone for the murder of their brother in arms. Jenkins allowed this to protect his human resources, et everyone know there would be consequences for this, no matter who specifically was responsible. One thing seemed certain to Eve, this was no world to bring a child into.

On July 10th Eve learned where Dr Weber lived. After her shift she went to see him. He wasn't home, so she waited outside his apartment. As she waited a sector guard arrived. He said nothing, just stood there silently. Eve understood. Given Weber's work at the mercy clinic he might be a target for religious zealots, killing him would deplete Jenkins' resources. Eventually he arrived. Weber and Eve spoke privately.

.

Weber: What do you need?

Eve: You promised to help me, with whatever choice I made.

Weber: Yes. Have you made a decision?

Eve: Yes. I'be decided, not to have this baby. Can you help with that?

Weber: Yeah. Come by my clinic tomorrow around 7am. I'll take care of it in private. Don't eat anything after midnight.

Eve: Thank you.
