Chapter 252
.
Eve thought about the reverand's offer. If she left, she might be punished. There were rumors of special courts declaring some pregnant sector women mentally un-fit, and abortions became mandatory for them. Their logic was that any woman who became pregnant now, carrying a child to term who was certain to be excluded from the Arks, must be a little crazy. Eve knew she'd be questioned, the sector police might even declare her insane. Despite her previous choice, Eve now found herself wanting to protect this baby. Leaving this church would put both Eve and her baby in danger. But Eve also knew that this was about more than just her and her child. There were more than a dozen refugees in this safe house alone. Most likely other churches, mosques, synagouges, private and abandoned homes were also taking in refugees. Although reverand Jenkins never said as much, Eve suspected he didn't trust her yet. If she was on the outside, particularly working directly for Wilkins, Eve could help, provide both intel and food. But she'd be placing herself and this baby in grave danger.
Eve came to Wilkins' house shortly before 2pm. She was suppossed to be here by noon. She apologized, and said she could stay late to make it up to the councilman. He seemed to understand, said it was fine. Eve liked this man, a part of her regretted having to betray him like this. But those refugees at the church, their lives might depend on what Eve learned here. At 5pm Eve finished her work and Wilkins said she could go. One of the perks of working for such a germaphobe was he kept his house clean already. As Eve walked out a sector guard came. He seemed to recognize Eve, and began questioning her. Eve knew this was a defining moment. Until now she hadn't officially taken a side. She would either have to lie to this guard, or betray her new friends from the church. Now, she had to make a choice. Eve stood on the porch steps as the guard questioned her about this morning.
.
Guard: Ms Thompson, I was hoping you could help us with our investigation. You were at a mercy clinic this morning?
Eve: Yes. I went there to end my pregnancy. But I changed my mind.
Guard: I see. Did you witness an incident with another patient?
Eve: Yes. A young girl arguing with her mother. She ran away. In the heat of the moment I ran away with her.
Guard: Did you talk to the girl?
Eve: Yes. I asked if she had a place to stay. She said yes, but never told me where she was going. I haven't seen her since.
Guard: I see. Thank you for your help ms Thompson.
