Chapter 294
.
Reverand Barnes gave Eve an important task for the rebellion. The sector police station needed to be neutralized to limit their ability to stop the neo-rebels. Because of Eve's job, she had the access. It was hard, but she understood why it had to be done. They were traitors, the enemy soldiers. These individuals fought for the collective army, then switched sides when things went south. Eve agreed to do this, providing the church took care of Hope while this occurred. Even if she was successful, Eve knew she could die, but she was willing to risk it. When Eve left for work on Friday she dropped Hope off at the church, and they gave her a bomb.
Friday Febuary 8th was a long day for Eve. She had a bomb in her back-pack. If caught, she'd likely be executed on the spot. Her orders were not to detonate until after the last buses left. Some of the leaving guards came by the station. They wanted to say goodbye to their friends, still hoping to be reunited on the Arks. Eve knew that, because of her, these people would never see each other again. Eve feared that people would notice her fear, that it might give her away. But with 163 days until impact, most had days like this, particularly with the buses leaving. Carrying her back-pack wasn't suspicious, not with so much theft and a number of guards leaving. Still, this was going to be a long, nerve-racking day. And yet, she feared what would happen when it ended.
The last buses left at 2pm. Eve's orders were not to detonate until at least 3pm. Eve waited a bit longer, had to be absolutely certain. Finally, it was 3:15. Eve knew she couldn't put his off any longer. She'd memorized where the sector guards were stationed. She covertly sent Barnes an e-mail about these locations. It would likely be ten minutes before Bowen realized that this had been sent. But that no longer matterred. In ten minutes it would be too late. Eve quietly opened her back-pack, and activated the timer. It was set for three minutes, there was no going back. Eve quietly got up, like she was going to the ladies room. But as she neared the exit Bowen called for her. There had been two bombings across the sector, Eve was needed at her desk. Eve knew she had less than one minute before the bomb went off. Despite Bowen's threat Eve ran out the front door. Bowen must've realized Eve was a radical, perhaps he even knew she had a bomb in her bag. But it was too late. Within seconds Eve heard the explosion.
