Chapter 295
.
When she woke up, Eve was lying on the street. The police station was on fire, rescue workers were trying to put it out, save who they could. Most people were running away from the fire, or at least keeping their distance. Eve knew she was responsible for this carnage, and for her own pain. Then Eve saw a doctor speaking to her, except that she couldn't hear him. Then it occurred to Eve, she couldn't hear anything, she couldn't even move. The force from the explosion took away her hearing, possibly paralyzed her. Was this permenant? Eve had just set off a bomb, murdered people she'd worked with, gotten along with. She figured she deserved whatever happenned.
Eve lost conscioussness on the street. She drifted in and out at the hospital. When Eve woke up later, she realized she could hear again. Judging by where the sun was in the sky, it was likely late afternoon. Hard to know the day. Things here seemed to be functioning normally. Maybe the rebellion was already over, which side won was the 64 ration point question. Eve tried listening to other people talking. A lot of people had been injured lately, the hospitls were over-worked. 161 days until impact, that made today Febuary 10th, two days since Eve delivered the bomb. People were afraid, perhaps of reprisals from governor Jenkins, or of a new government controlled by religious zealots. Then Eve saw the most beautiful sight she could imagine right now. It was Jamal, holding baby Hope. Seeing these two, Eve was optimistic, maybe their side had already won. Or maybe the sector guards were planning to execute her, just allowing her one last glimpse of her daughter. Even if they were, at least Jamal had seemingly gotten away, could protect her child.
.
Eve: You two are a sight for sore eyes.
Jamal: We both wanted to see you.
Eve: What happenned exactly?
Jamal: Someone planted a bomb in the sector police station. You're just lucky that you stepped outside for a ciggarette.
Eve: Yeah, lucky. Was it just that one bomb?
Jamal: No. Armed rebels are planning to sieze control of the whole sector. Chief Bowen is dead, but captain Wells has assumed control and is fighting against the rebellion.
Eve: But you and my church are taking care of Hope right?
Jamal: Yes, Hope is fine. I don't know exactly what will happen, but Hope will be protected. We just had to see you.
Eve: Thank you.
.
Eve and Jamal talked for a little while. They were careful not to mention their involvement in the rebellion, fearful of who might still be listening. Jamal had taken a big risk taking a few hours away from this to see Eve. But she was glas to see them, know that they were okay, at least for now.
